Calamari was fried perfect but sauce was watery and bland. Food overall was decent but could have been better Service was very good.
What was once a great place to dine has become a tacky, tourist stop. The rude man at the front door handing out free pizza should have been the sign to run. Our waitress Maria was lovely, but the remaining staff was rude and unfriendly. I will not go back ever again. Food was not that great at all.
Food is great, authentic Italian made by people who know what they're doing with Italian food. In a place like DC, that's not as common as in a place like NYC. My only major critique of Il Canale is that it is not a place where they really let you linger too much. It's very noisy and chaotic due to the fact that there is always a line of people out the door, so it's hard to have a peaceful, relaxing meal here.
The food was disappointing. The service was ok. I ordered the carbonara and It was plain. It did not have flavor. It came with two strips of bacon on top. It was barely seasoned or peppered. I paid $20+ for a plate of Carbonara. The Gnocchi alla bolognese was ok. The sauce was not very good at all.
The balcony was great on a summer pm.
This restaurant was our second choice for our anniversary dinner. I made a reservation ahead of time, for Friday August 16 at 6PM. It wasn't very crowded yet, so it wasn't necessary.
When we got to the restaurant, they were giving samples of pizza for people to try. Unfortunately, the man waiting the entrance and the pizza was too invested in talking to a pretty woman who came over to try a sample to notice us standing there for almost a minute. When he finally noticed us, I said my name and the time of the reservation, and his co worker who appeared behind him when I was saying things recognized my reservation, not the guy who was manning the entrance...
I requested in my reservation to have a rose and a candle at our table if possible. I also specified it was our anniversary. Nothing I requested was done (except for the default candle at everyone's tables) but oh well.
The food was pretty amazing. We got pizzas. Very oily and my intestines did not thank me the next day, but it was worth it. Price didn't break the bank either.
Even though it wasn't too crowded yet, my husband and I had to repeat what we said to each other a few times. I also saw a fly or two around, and they liked to land in the parmesan cheese I sprinkled onto my pizza...maybe have a lid on it during the summer?
Service and food was excellent
Great atmosphere and excellent service! Had a table outside and ordered the lasagna and gnocchi. Excellent!! Definitely will try the pizza next time! Highly recommend!!
Went to a birthday dinner there on 8/14/19. I just think I picked a poor spot to have a celebration. I was disappointed in the whole thing. The server was very nice, but I had to ask where are drinks were after our appetizers came. Food was okay, but no one raved about any of our choices - lasagna, carbonara, pizza, gnocchi and seabass. Probably pizza was the best. I don't see a reason to return when there are other better choices.
The pizza Was soggy and tasteless very disappointed and ingredients are not top quality and price is hi!
The service is awful... the only thing going for them is location and tourists ! Otherwise they should close the business
Magic pizza. Mental buzz in the place.
The bruschetta was amazing! I went with a friend on a busy Saturday night and our food came out very quickly. Great food, great service. It took about 10 minutes to get seated past our reservation time, but it was so busy that it was no problem.
The food was amazing! Definitely will return!
Well, it’s been a wonderful day in DC. Temperatures in the mid 80’s, partly cloudy and a breeze!! So we chose to dine outside. The Italian-style charcuterie appetizer was wonderful (2-3 size was plenty for 4). Two guests ordered the lasagne and were pleased...not spicy and baked in its own dish, not too big. The seafood pasta was tasty for another and the lamb chops and potatoes were quite delicious to another. We’d definitely return!
Il Canale is the perfect Italian Pizzeria with authentic Italian Pizza's Love their new Mortedella Pizza, the Italia is to live for. Enjoy the food and the service. This is a must stop on any trip to Georgetown.
Great food, Nice little restaurant in Georgetown. Pizzas were very good as well as pasta dishes.
Best napolitan pizza on Washington DC. Love thé place 😀
Simply outstanding! Authentic cuisine! Excellent wine selection and impeccable service!!!
Very good, good portions
Excellent service from Anna - there whenever we needed something. We added one to our table at the last minute and it was no problem to the host. For a Georgetown location, the prices were very reasonable. Sat in the rooftop seating area and it was comfortable with just enough city noise/ambiance without being distracting. The pizza(s) were excellent with the right balance of cheese/sauce/toppings and a good chewy crust with the perfect amount of flavor/salt. Plenty of parking in nearby garages (even on a Friday) for about 20-25 bucks. I'll definitely eat at Il Canale again.
Great food and fantastic service - would really recommend for anyone in Georgetown
Great just like always.
The host seemed annoyed rather than pleased that our diverse group of 5 had made a reservation via OpenTable. We were seated about 10 mn after our reservation time and watched others walk up and appear to be seated directly. We were after a few minutes asked to wait inside. Unsure of the reasoning behind this but given the lack of welcome and the other factors I am left to make rather unpleasant assumptions. The food was excellent, as it was the last time I dined here. However it is quite doubtful I would subject another group of out of town friends to a similar experience.
I've been to Il Canale many times and this was a really disappointing experience. I was seated upstairs with my significant other, where it was extremely loud - most tables had a lot of young children. Our appetizer (eggplant parm) was brought to us cold, and when we told our server, she took it back, but then didn't bring us new one until we followed up 20 minutes later (after our other food had already arrived). The server wasn't apologetic or friendly at all. Over the years, this restaurant has become a tourist trap and the quality of the food has definitely declined. I won't be coming back.
Il Canale rarely disappoints. Food is great. There’s usually a lively crowd and the restaurant often is pretty full, but they seat you quickly and the food comes out fast.
First off, the service here was good with attentive people trying to do right, but the problem is that the food was just plain poor.
The manager tried to fix things and replaced our “lobster” ravioli, which had an off texture, with a what unfortunately tasted like a previously frozen, old Branzino.
I’d say stick to the pizza here...at least the sample they had on the hostess table was tasty.
A great place for pizza. Will defo be back. Any uk visitors should head their ASAP!!
Loud inside, but quiet outside on the balcony. Great service!
Great food & service! Ricardo was awesome! Outside table was fun on a nice summer night. Will be even better once the road construction is finished. We'll be back next time we're in town.
The food was amazing… And our server was super helpful and encouraging!
There wasn't anything wrong with Il Canale. There just wasn't anything great. Our server was incredibly meh -- no engagement and seemingly no interest in being there. The food was average. We were put in the room farthest from the door so I don't know how that 'ranks' in the restaurant. We had our two daughters (17 and 9) and were put in the room with other families (two families with loud young kids). I get it: we have kids so we have to go where the kids go. But clearly that wasn't the room with much energy (assuming you don't count a kid's energy as lively, interesting Italian restaurant energy). Like I said: nothing wrong with the place but I won't go back.
It was my boyfriends birthday I had made the reservation under my name I just forgot to put it’s his birthday so the waiters probably thought it was mine lol I’ll remember to write to the name next time. Thank you so much for making my boyfriends day special.
Wonderful . Boise was very low because we were sitting outside and the street was closed (no traffic because construction work). So this was a wonderful experience.
Great restaurant! Great food and service. Too bad there aren't better acoustics. It is very noisy and makes it difficult to converse with other guests at your own table if the restaurant is full. Other than that, amazing!!
I met with friends from out of the country. They were very happy. And the wait staff was very friendly.
Two years ago, my husband and I took our teenaged niece to Il Canale for her birthday. This year she requested to go again.
Pavle is an amazing host. He makes sure you are well taken care of. Rosa is on topof things.
A little pricy, but so delicious! The employees were all so nice and the whole atmosphere was enjoyable. Definitely a must when in the area.
Had reservations which are a must. Chicken was a bit chaotic but went quickly. Food is excellent . Hard to have conversation with the noise.
Love the food and atmosphere here!
