Located in the heart of Georgetown, il Canale offers the most authentic Neapolitan pizza in DC, thin-crust made by our Italian pizzaiolos cooked in a wood-fired oven imported from Italy. The kitchen offers a menu that brings our native country to your table with every selection—antipasti, pastas, seafood, meat, fresh bufala mozzarella from Italy, and much more. The attractive blue-lit, full bar specializes in select Italian wines. In warm weather, dine alfresco at the sidewalk tables or on the roof-top terrazza overlooking the Georgetown scene.
Be sure to check out our lunch menu, featuring delicious paninis made with our fresh bread baked instantly in our wood fire brick oven and four new pasta items. Our happy hour, from 4-7 pm Monday-Friday, features all drinks at 1/2 price! (Happy Hour restricted to bar area).
Coming down from M Street, il Canale is the 2nd restaurant on the left.

We had an amazing experience! Our server was super friendly and we received exceptional service. We both ordered pizza and it was definitely the best pizza we have ever had!

We should perhaps not be so visible with our glowing review -- we are local to Il Canale and try to get over to it as often as we can, so advertising just how great it is might spoil it for us ;-). Here's our thing: Pick a nice evening when one can sit outside, and if it is a highly active GTown evening (like a Saturday), you can get the great food and service, and be totally entertained by the people watching. Of course, the Margherita (sauce, mozzarella, and basil) is always the true test and it never disappoints. So many other great choices as well -- basically there is nothing on the menu that is not wonderful.

I relied on Il Canali twice in the last couple of weeks for special family dinners with discerning attendees from out of town. It did not disappoint. Every entree was superb, and the salads some of the freshest and creatively composed I have had recently. The host was especially warm and welcoming, and Aldo, our waiter, was helpful in making cuisine selections, vibrant in his descriptions, responsive to our every demand, especially astute in the wine selection, and clever in his repartee with two former waitresses. Without question we would request his fine services again. All in all, it was a fine evening.

I'd been to llCanale before, which have been great, always good food and fun. Went along to this one with some family friends, to celebrate a birthday. The place had a buzzing atmosphere and busy, probbably what you'd expect from a Friday night.
The food was perfect, modest portions and speedy service which always makes for a better evening. All 6 of us had 3 courses and were very impressed, will definitely be going again.

The food was great! The one thing they need to fix is the outdoor seating. The tables are cheap metal tables and the seats are extremely uncomfortable. The waiter we had was great though

We're from Ohio and upon our arrival to DC we asked quite a few people about places to eat. Everyone suggested Il Canale! The authentic Neapolitan pizza was delicious...thin in the middle with a thicker crust, prepared with fresh ingredients. We ordered a bottle of Piegaia Chianti based on a recommendation from our server and it was good to the last drop!

This restaurant was very crowded, thank god we had reservations but even so the tables were very close together and cramped. I am from NY where pizza is king, I thought the tomato sauce was one of the best I have tried but unfortunately the pizza was far from it. The crust on the edges was good and crispy but the middle was soggy and hard to eat.

I picked this restaurant because of its gluten free options for a family member that was visiting, but was pleasantly surprised to find their food was actually really good in general. The waitress was attentive once we sat down but my only complaint is that there was a hectic bottle neck when checking in with a lot of frustrated people, all with reservations. There was only one guy helping everyone and he also needed to take phone calls, but finally another guy stepped in to help. I almost wanted to leave, but I’m glad we waited, and the wait wasn’t very long.

It was very packed when we first got there. Extremely loud. We almost couldn’t get through the door to the host stand. But they’re extremely efficient. Even though we were early, they still accommodated us. We didn’t wait long for food or drinks. I think the service only suffered bc of how busy they are. The food was great though.

Truly the best meatballs we have ever experienced--well balanced flavor, perfect texture---they nearly outshine the incredible pizza we went for in the first place! The staff is friendly, jovial and clearly focused on the quality of their guests' food as well as their overall experience. Makes you feel like family!

I love this place. I went with my friend and she said she ate the best pizza she had ever in her life. I agree with her opinion. The food was super delicious! This restaurant was popular so all servers were busy at that time. We had to wait for getting spoons and knives though we already received the food. Except that, everything was perfect.

We were in town for a DC visit with a cousin from overseas and looked for a place in Georgetown to go hang out. We were staying at a hotel in Foggy Bottom and wanted someplace that we could walk to. After a long day walking the National Mall we found this restaurant in OpenTable while at the hotel and its a good thing I made a reservation when I did. Of course it was not only Saturday night but, also Easter weekend, and it was in Georgetown, a usually busy hot spot. One of the best things about OpenTable is the ease and speed in which you can make a last minute reservation. The restaurant was packed and even though we had a reservation we had to wait an extra 15 minutes to be seated, which is not too bad given the time, the holiday, and the weekend. Others, a lot of others without reservations, had to wait outside in the cold for much longer. We were seated on a rooftop section between two town houses about 15 feet wide by the length of the restaurant, so it was cold but, luckily there were enough sun umbrellas to cover the section roof to roof to help trap some heat. The restaurant had three levels, so plenty of room but, given the time of the year the roof was not the best place to be. They could have used an outdoor heater up there to keep guests comfortable. They had one on the sidewalk with some tables, time to invest in one for the roof. Other than that, the food was tasty and cooked correctly, not that I am an expert but, I did notice the good taste, you know how you can just tell? One of the signs of a good Italian restaurant is often the consistency and flavor of their fried calamari. The fried calamari was soft and practically melted in your mouth after the crunch of the fried shell, nicely done. The fried mozzarella appetizer was also done well and not greasy. The pizzas we ordered were also tasty and not overloaded nor skimpy, sort of just right. The thin crust of the pizzas had good flavor, however, the crust base could have used a little more crunch.

This place has become a factory. Food is decent, but there is immense pressure to turn tables. So much so that a fork (with food on it) was literally taken out of my hand as they cleared the table.

This place was just ok, not as good as we expected! It was a holiday weekend on a beautiful evening , so the crowds in Georgetown were huge. The restaurant was packed with people waiting for tables, it was almost impossible for the servers to move about this lively restaurant. The food was just average. The portions were small, the Bronzino was dry and tasteless. My kids enjoyed the lobster ravioli and the gnocchi were excellent.. small like we make them at home! The calamari appetizer was over cooked but the salads were really good. We would probably choose another restaurant the next time we visit Georgetown! Our table was ready for us at our reservation time which was a bonus with the huge crowd waiting!! This place is very loud and the bathrooms are upstairs.. hard for my 80 year old mother to hear and make it to the bathrooms.

Great food (tuna/arugula salad, veggie pizza, gnocchi, seafood pasta), friendly and prompt service- even on a busy weekend. Nice seat just inside of outdoor area- best of both worlds. Easy flat rate parking at garage across street.
