Il Borgo Ratings and Reviews
We always enjoy Il Borgo for their delicious and authentic Italian dishes, great Italian wines and excellent value. We love going there before the symphony or opera. Service can be a bit brusque because they're so busy, but still they manage to get us served and satisfied every time!
I went to to this restaurant for the first time based on the reviews. I was sorely disappointed as I really looked forward to some terrific Italian food. First off, the service was gruff and unfriendly. The mista salad was disappointing since I've had Mista salads in other Italian establishments that were superb. I have to say, the homemade bread was quite yummy. But nobody in our party of four felt the food was anything to talk about and we go out a few times a week to eat. I won't be going back and I certainly wouldn't recommend Il Borga.
We had 7 people at Il Borgo including two visitors from Italy. We had a great time; the food was excellent and the service was too. The visitors thought the food was excellent also. Il Borgo is not pretentious but there was a great spread of people there that night, from young to much older. (ourselves)
This is a genuine, local Italian food eatery. It's a rare breed these days in a city that has so many restaurants that take themselves too seriously. The owners are a couple from northern Italy and they have a lot of heart. The menu is basic. Nothing fancy, but good. At Il Borgo, you can let your hair down and relax.
We loved Il Borgo! It is a darling cozy restaurant that our family ate at before an opera concert. We had a reservation but ended up running late due to traffic and called to let the staff know. They were very accomodating! Our group had the pesto gnocchi, spaghetti and meat sauce, Margarita pizza, Salad and two bottles of Chianti. Six of us shared the food and it was plenty to eat before our concert.
It was all delicious!
We have been going to Il Borgo since it opened in the late 90s. It is a Hayes Valley institution, but also a truly authentic and fresh Italian family restaurant. I've lived in Italy, and this restaurant makes me feel like I'm in a neighborhood of Milan! I highly recommend the homemade pasta and pizza, and the amazing grilled chicken. Our family loves it here.
