It is "festive and vera cucina italiana."Ideale has been bringing a slice of Rome to North Beach for over 20 years with it's highly acclaimed chef, Maurizio Bruschi. Maurizio hails from four generations of Roman chefs, lovingly taught by his grandma, la Nonna Serafina. The pastas and breads are all homemade and the ingredients are hand-picked daily. Zagat gave Ideale a 25 for food and wrote that the "Italian fare is the real of the few no tourist eateries in North Beach..excellent pasta and pizza..the service makes you feel like a friend..a delightful experience." First waiter was entirely ignorant of the wine menu and sarcastic as hell.
Used to be more family-like and welcoming.

We went because my girlfriend had raved about this place, and I've lived down the street for years and have always been curious. The ambiance is amazing. Beautiful place. We were greeted by a nice gentleman. Our table was not ready, despite having made a reservation. No big deal. We sit at the table, and what seemed to be the theme for the night, were ignored for 10-15 minutes. We finally order our drinks and an appetizer. Both come. Burrata was delicious. wine was delicious. Waiter has forgotten to bring our bread to the table, so I ask him. Basically our burrata is done by the time he brings the bread back. Doesn't ask us if we're ready for our main course, so another 20 minutes passes before we flag someone down to take our order. Our wines are now finished and the main courses come. I got lasagna the gf got a pasta with meat sauce. Our waiter finally notices our dry glasses and asks us if we want another. We do. Unfortunately, our meals were halfway done by the time he came back with our drinks. The only thing that had any flavor of any kind in my lasagna, was the parmesan cheese on top. Meat was unseasoned, sauce tasted like they opened a can of crushed tomatoes and did nothing to it. Same with the girlfriends pasta. Bland and flavorless. We're both pretty patient people, but after trying to flag someone down for another 15 min so we can pay, we were both fairly irritated by the entire experience.

Short version. Pros - good wine and burrata Cons - terrible service, we were ignored for most of the time we spent there, and the food was bland.

I wouldn't go here again. Super disappointed especially because my girlfriend had had pleasant experiences there before.

The food and service were excellent. I ordered an Old Fashioned from the bar and it was the best I had ever had. Everything is homemade, recipes are creative and delicious. I recommend ordering more than one item as the menu is designed to be eaten in courses. Ideale is my favorite North Beach restaurant.

It was a slow night so nice and quiet, easy to hear each other. Decent Manhattans. In retrospect, there were a couple negative kitchen points, but we still enjoyed a leisurely and comprehensive dining experience. We shared a variety of starters including the zucchini tartufata that I love, and which some day I will order as an entree, because I can’t seem to get enough of it, especially when we are sharing. Unfortunately, this time the crostini was kind of soggy instead of crispy. The pastas are housemade; slight miss this time though, too al dente, and with way too much salt; again we were sharing , and frankly, if I had ordered this dish just for myself, I might have sent it back. North Beach Restaurant also tends to serve super salty pasta, not sure why. The rack of lamb chops were perfectly cooked and sliced thinner than I have seen, but I liked them that way. The profiteroles were perfect. This is not the glowing review I would prefer to give, because I love this restaurant and have eaten there numerous times. I think this was not their usual best; but I will certainly give them another chance.

High hopes, but a little disappointing. 2 of our 3 pasta dishes were served tepidly warm, the third as super hot. Took a while to get our wine to our table after we ordered it, and overall service was on slow side. Our waiter seemed somewhat distracted the entire time, partly, I think, because he seemed to be working an awful lot of tables for one guy. Dessert was good. I expected very high caliber pasta, but it was kind of "meh".

We’ve been to this restaurant several times every time we come to San Francisco and it’s always been consistently great. So great, in fact, we always order the same thing: the lasagna. This last time, however, the lasagna wasn’t as good as it usually is. The flavor element was not there. I hope they get back to where they were. Otherwise, our Ideale days are over.

The food was so bland. Everything with red sauce tasted the same. The eggplant appetizer wasn't fried first, so it was just mushy. The lasagna was bland. No seasonings. But the worst was the Carbonara i ordered. The most greasy dish ive ever had, i sent it back. Unfortunately it left a bad aftertaste. I'm so disappointed that with my limited time in SF, i picked this bland mediocre establishment

Very slow service. Chosen bottles of wine not available. Substitute substandard. A couple appetizers were very good: arugula and speck, procuitto and pears. Entrees ordinary, e.g., cioppino and tortellini. Mezzelune with squash undercooked, both pasta and filling.

Always enjoy our time at Ideale. Atmosphere is super and our wait person. Angelina was efficient, energetic, engaging and had a very good sense of humor. Our fellow diners thought the food was abit bland.

Very very disappointed. We have been going to Ideale whenever we were in SF. for a number of years. The food was barely average and in fact the pizza appetizer was cold when brought to the table. The dessert looked so bad when delivered that the waiter finally decided to bring one more presentable. In general everything was several notches below what we have experienced in the past and will be looking for a new spot to go when in the city.

Never had a bad meal. Carbonara as good as advertised. Calamari and Zucchini appetizers absolutely sensational. Wine prices both glasses and bottles very affordable. If I lived in neighborhood I would be quite overweight by now. Meant as a compliment.

I'm Italian and I assure that it's an authentic italian restaurant managed by italians. All ingredients are fresh and all pasta is homemade!! Really impressive. Chef Maurizio is a beautiful and kind person. He also personally makes some off-the-menu dishes upon request. Absolutely the best italian restaurant.

The food was delicious and the service was beyond gracious. We took our kids (7 yr & 10 yr) and they asked for pesto pasta, which was not on the menu. They made it to order and it was amazing! Great food, service, and fun neighborhood! We will definitely be back to Ideale.

Best authentic Italian cuisine in North Beach. Classic Italian food has been created and served at Ideale for over 20 years. Chef Maurizio Bruschi brings his Roman heritage to every plate. Daily specials are described by the Italian wait staff, the pesce (fish) is always fresh and changes daily based on what has been caught that day. Pastas noodles are all house made daily, and the pizzas are always favorites at the table. My husband loves the Zappa di pesce for his main course, and I like to start with the prosciutto e pear. Ideale is a wonderful restaurant for a couple, or a gathering with friends and family. It is our favorite Italian restaurant.
