"For an authentic Roman holiday without the airfare, this undiscovered North Beach gem is worth seeking out."
(Zagat)A bright, colorful Italian restaurant, Ideale is the modern version of a traditional Roman trattoria. It is "festive and boisterous...la vera cucina italiana."Ideale has been bringing a slice of Rome to North Beach for over 20 years with it's highly acclaimed chef, Maurizio Bruschi. Maurizio hails from four generations of Roman chefs, lovingly taught by his grandma, la Nonna Serafina. The pastas and breads are all homemade and the ingredients are hand-picked daily. Zagat gave Ideale a 25 for food and wrote that the "Italian fare is the real deal...one of the few no tourist eateries in North Beach..excellent pasta and pizza..the service makes you feel like a friend..a delightful experience." Ideale has won numerous awards, including being listed in Zagat's "Best Italian Restaurants in America" and The Chronicle's "Best Pasta in North Beach."

Ideale Ratings and Reviews
Great food, lovely restaurant, fun to be in North Beach. BUT...the waiter was in such a hurry, didn't pay attention to our order. We ordered 2 bottles of wine, he poured 2 glasses and ran off with the bottle. Had to flag him down to tell him we'd ordered the whole bottle, he brought back a half-empty bottle, not sure it was ours. Individual appetizers came out at different times, had to remind him about the 4th one when the rest of us were almost done with ours. Recommend Ideale but hope for a different waiter next time.
The food is delicious, the waiters great and overall pleasant experience. In a neighborhood filled with a lot of "American-style" Italian restaurants, Ideale is the authentic experience. They have a wonderful carbonara sauce which is as good as any you'll have in Rome.
The squid oasta drew me back for a second visit. So tasty and pretty too. Great wine selection at a nice price We paired it with Caesar salad and calamari served on a bed of arugula. But the service is distracted and it’s a bit casual for a truly romantic dinner.
I was recommended to go there so I tried it. To be fair they had a party in other room but if you can't handle your party plus 2 more tables don't open the other 2 tables. They wouldn't serve food they had on bar in party for kids at table next to us, come on they just wanted fried calamari. As for us the services was horrible, even seeing our faces glancing into room every 10 min.. pear appy was good, pizza was a bit above average. Salads were subpar so we left before ordering mains with no service in sight.
It has been about 20 years since my last visit unfortunately (I was visiting from Canada), but I remember what a great meal it was. So I made a point of returning to Ideale during this most recent visit with my partner. The food was flavourful and authentic, the ambience noisy and bustling, and the service was attentive. Thanks Fabio and Paulo for a great meal. It won't be 20 years til my next visit!
We arrived after a Beach Blanket Babylon show that ended at 9:30 PM. Only 3 blocks away is Ideale. You can miss this place if you go at night. A somewhat seedy neighborhood and the interior is dated. Our pasta dishes, penne salmon special and tortellini in cream sauce were very good. The starter a baked eggplant and mozzarella was delicious but surprisingly small portion filling half the bowl. The other half was occupied by greens that I did not remember being mentioned in the menu. The bread offering was half stale and uninteresting.
I've been to Ideale a number of times over the years, and honestly, it never disappoints. The fresh made pasta with pumpkin / walnut was really delicious, the scene was relaxed but vibrant, and the staff was friendly and authentic. Would definitely recommend!
Would I go again? No. Wish they had done a better job greeting me at the door, acknowledging whether or not I had a reservation so I didn't need to spend time writing "how I did show up, but the restaurant said I didn't. Oh, and don't forget the fact that you had to flag down the waiter for, well, everything. If the food were killer, it would have been fine, it wasn't. Worst Cacio e Pepe I've ever had.
Must be under new management/owners because it's certainly NOT the same place.
I've dined at Ideale many times and have always had a great experience. We didn't recognize any of the staff and they didn't know us. In the past they always remembered us and treated us like family.
Too bad yet another great spot has changed NOT for the better. Bummer!! Won't go back!
The food rating for pizza only. If you are going there for anything other than pizza, please read some other reviews. We were greater with a very attentive staff, and the service throughout the evening was excellent. Constant attention was given.
We had the pizza with Italian Sausage and mushrooms. The pizza was watery, the sauce and Italian sausage was bland. There seemed to be zero spices and zero Italian seasoning for the sausage.
