ICHI Sushi Ratings and Reviews
The thoughtful, innovative superior Nigiri does not disappoint here. The price is high but the taste makes up for it. I did not have the Omikase this time but It has been a culinary delight in the past. I liked the larger restaurant. Now that they have downsized I miss the vibe of the bigger restaurant
Went for the Sushi (loved it when they were across the street)
The sushi was Boring and uninspired.
The service from the Sushi Chefs was rude.
Our sushi chef did not want to answer any questions and we felt hushed.
The actual back of the sushi bar (we were on the side) was Very dirty. Dirty rags, raw fish on top of raw meat blood, fish thrown about without care.
Presentation was less than lack luster.
$4.00-$6.00 per piece of sushi
NO thank you.
Going to take my family and my money else where.
Beware! This place needs a health inspection badly
ICHI is consistently one of the best sushi experiences in San Francisco, despite there being a myriad of better known alternatives. The omakase is the way to go, sit at the bar, talk to the chefs. The price point is competitive. My only complaint is that some of the nigiri can be a bit "over dressed", but its not to hide a lower quality fish or cut, and doesn't deter me from going back.
We went to celebrate my friend's birthday - first time there for both of us. The nigiri was fabulous. We also added the fish collar and waygu beef - both were excellent. The hotate taco was our least favorite dish, though there are many favorable reviews. The restaurant was sweet to send a complimentary glass of sparkling wine with our last course. Overall, expensive, but worth it.
I took my boyfriend here for his birthday because I wanted to give him a dining experience that was different from your usual sushi restaurants in San Francisco. After much research, I found Ichi Sushi. I chose this restaurant based on creative menu items, sustainability, and affordability and Ichi Sushi did not disappoint.
The only negative was that there was no dessert option. However, they made up for it by providing complimentary champagne and ginger beer (my boyfriend doesn't drink alcohol). Really great service!
The sushi was delicious and the presentation of each item we ordered was beautiful. We went all out and feasted until we were full and our bill was under $100. I think that's amazing for a high quality dining experience in San Francisco.
Tim, Daryl and Jordan, consistently delivering on every visit. The crew at Ichi Sushi are the best and sushi is over the top, excellent! I live about an hour away and make my way down to this specific gem in the Mission for great service, sushi and just all around great time.
I'm sorry but I like soy sauce with my sushi. However, it is the policy of the restaurant that everything is perfectly seasoned by the chef so - sorry - but soy sauce is not available even upon request. Too bad that I like spicy food and prefer my food a bit on the salty side. Why is it unacceptable to them that I want to add seasoning to my $60 meal. I won't be back.
ICHI was incredible. The omakase is both a chef's choice as well as an 'unlimited' order as much as you'd like (and pay accordingly) instead of a prix fixe menu. The quality of the fish was spectacular, and the dressing/pairing of ingredients on the sashimi was the best I've had. The service was great and the chefs were fantastic. Probably the best sushi we've ever had!
Really nice selection of fish. They seem to always have varieties that you don't see at other sushi spots. Our sushi chef was a really friendly older Japanese man with amazing knife skills and a kind demeanor. We got the Omakase but ended up adding a few more pieces before the uni which was some of the best we have ever had. It was definitely quite expensive when you add the sake. All told our bill was $285 for two people with a $50 carafe of sake.
I had an amazing experience the first time i visited Ichi, about 2 years ago, so was very excited for this dinner. The food was delicious, but the service was really disappointing. I am typically very forgiving as I empathize with how challenging a servers' role can be.
A few things that impacted the experience:
- We asked the server about the omakase and how much it was, and his response was "oh, i dont usually tell people the price." We pushed him, and he finally conceded, "well, sometimes it can be more, sometimes less. I'd plan for about $100 a person." His initial response was fairly offputting though -- and didnt put us at ease/make us feel comfortable or welcome
- Lack of attentiveness - somewhat blase attitude
Both of these incidences made the 20-25-30% suggestion for a tip on the bill fairly insulting. Sushi is absolutely a high touch experience, and one that I often tip more than 20% for. However, the service didnt hold up to the food - or prices - and it felt a bit insulting to see that 30% suggestion. I know this is likely an automatic thing on the bill, but wanted you to be cognizant that it really suggested to me that the restaurant is confident that the majority of its transactions are paired with exceptional service - which we unfortunately did not experience.
