With a menu centered around authenticity and traditional flavors, Hwaban is dedicated to widening NY's understanding of Modern Korean Cuisine.
Immaculate presentation paired with friendly service will most certainly make for a pleasant dining experience.
With much gratitude and appreciation, from all of us at Hwaban
55 West 19th Street
Tasting menu was excellent. Chicken and vegetable dish was yummy. Steak on rice cakes was the best.
Hwaban just keeps getting better. Some standouts include the chicken stew, the rice cakes with beef, and the oxtails. Save room for dessert, especially the Pavlova, the cheesecake, or the chef's special.
I loved the atmosphere at Hwaban - quiet, yet welcoming. Servers were friendly and professional. The food was delicious, from the dubu appetizer to the rice cake with ribeye steak. I will definitely return to try more dishes!
Ambience, food presentation, pace, service and food itself en pointe! Inspired and inspiring! Can’t wait for our next meal here to try other dishes. Thank you!
Amazing highly recommend !
First, the food--flavors, textures, and overall quality--was very high. The three courses prove to be quite filling. Second, the service was outstanding. We had a complicated situation with half of our party, and the staff could not have been kinder or more accommodating. The decor is very soothing and the restaurant is blessedly quiet, so it is a great place to go relax, have some wonderful dishes, and enjoy oneself in the company of family or friends.
We just ate there for the first time tonight. We brought our two boys. The three course menu is fresh and inventive, with a nod to modern Korean cuisine. The owner also owns Kosaka in the village. She is such a lovely person and you can see that come through in the service - everyone is so professional and takes great pride in the menu. We will come back!!
Great service and delicious!
the overall atmosphere was nice but the food was too salty and the soup was not warm enough.
Elegant, modern Korean cuisine, beautifully presented and graciously served in a serene and attractive environment
Hwaban was a unique and culinarily exciting experience. Recommended for an upscale date night, dinner with the parents, or intimate group dining.
It is really good food but in my opinion not spectacular. I thought the abalone appetizer was kind of bland unlike the scallops that are indeed right at the top. The Salmon and chicken were quite good but again not spectacular.
The strawberry cream cake was the one fish absolutely spectacular.
Enjoy an elegant ambiance and minimalist dishes that burst with flavor.
This was a magnificent dining experience! Two best girlfriends took me out for my birthday and when we arrived there was even a special birthday greeting on the table which was exactly how this restaurant operates, paying beautiful attention to every detail of the meal. From the beautiful menus tucked in envelopes to the dishes, each an Perfect work of art and divine beyond words. The atmosphere is chic and sophisticated yet comfortable and relaxed and our server was extremely polite and took care of us like royalty. The wine choices were beyond wonderful and paired well with the cuisine and the delightful desserts ended the meal joyfully. Can’t wait to go back.
It was an interesting experience with some very good dishes and some all right but not outstanding ones. The fixed menu requiring two main courses at once made for a crowded table and a somewhat difficult order to make. However the waiter was very helpful.
Since we were already fans of Kosaka, the second we found out that Mihyun Han had another restaurant we rushed to make a reservation. And we did not regret it! The food is absolutely delicious! For apps we tried the Sweet Shrimp, Dubu and Lotus Root Salad. As entrees we had the Rice, Rice Cake, Oxtail and Beef Short Ribs. For desert we had the Tropical Pavlova. We honestly loved everything we ate here -- you will not be disappointed by any of these dishes. That being said, the Dubu, Rice Cake, Rice and Short Ribs were out of this world good. I especially recommend these particular items. We came again recently for brunch and it was just as delicious. The crab fried rice in particular was excellent
Place is great for foodies! Excellent service, special atmosphere, very kind staff and artfully beautiful food.
Delicious food, unobtrusive and gracious service. Bravo!
Haute Korean. Exceptional desserts. Excellent service. Already planning our next visit.
Exquisitely prepared food -- everything absolutely delicious! Gracious and attentive service in a very serene setting. Bravo!
Great food, excellent service, uncluttered dining room. Weird speakers but perfect level of ambient music.
After checking out Hwaban shortly after it opened, we decided to have our New Year's dinner here. As expected, the tasting menu was excellent. The food quality is outstanding and the chef did a great job of creating Korean food that's modern but not watered down or going for "fusion". Service staff were attentive, friendly without being overbearing. The wine we had (Cote du Rhone) was wonderful as well. The space is minimalist and elegant and we enjoyed our quiet but festive and delicious New Year's dinner.
Portions are so small it’s laughable. The food were all precooked and warm.
They served a 4 course meal for $80 pp in 35 mins...it’s like Ktown except more expensive and you need to go to another restaurant to fill your appetite.
Delicious and elegant Korean restaurant.
Fantastic food and service! Highest level of Korean food that I have had the pleasure of tasting.
Hwaban is a lovely spot with refined, modern, delicious Korean food without a shred of pretension. Service is friendly and gracious. Save rooms for the fabulous desserts.
Outstanding food and service. Can't recommend enough.
Innovative yet homey korean dining. Reminds me of more homestyle atomix
Everything about our experience here was wonderfully understated. From the -
attentive, knowledgeable staff
visually exquisite food prepared to perfection
lovely birthday note greeting us upon being seated and finally the Champaign toast, on the house, to finish our evening. Low ambient noise level supported great conversation. All in all a gem.
Innovative, fresh and very flavorful Korean food. Presentation is flawless. Is still a hidden gem, recommend going for a date night or special occasion. Would not be surprised if it receives a Michelin star next year.
Love this place! Food is great and atmosphere is clean and beautiful. It was just perfect!
Excellent Modern and inventive Korean restaurant. The food was a delicious and modern take on traditional Korean dishes with superb ingredients.
Service was esxcellent and the retsaurant was elegant without being stuffy.
A really wonderful experience.
I recommend it without reservations.
We have dined numerous times at the sister restaurant, Kosaka, so we were excited to try the new place. The service was terrific, and the restaurant was very comfortable, with soft lighting and elegant tables and chairs. Of course, the food was the best! I lived in Korea for a year, so I have some experience with the cuisine, but this was altogether something else. Original, full of fresh ingredients, and very delicious. There were too many things to try in one visit, but we had the lotus root and the scallops for appetizers and the bipimbap, salmon and braised pork belly for the mains. The scallops and salmon were beautifully presented with spicy, but not overwhelming sauces. The Korean staples, like bipimbap and pork belly, were updated, and served in a nouvelle cuisine style that is very appealing, and will make this restaurant that we will visit regularly.
NOT worth the price of what it is. Maybe if they made it a la carte, it would be more worth it but the food is just too mediocre compared to the price of it. The food is something I can pay under 30 for at any other restaurant (for more and better tasting), yet here i'm paying 55 + tax +tip? Ugh no way.
Delicious and graciously served Korean restaurant.
Excellent Korean cuisine prepared under the watchful eyes of Mihyun Han and her team.
This is a beautiful, austere restaurant serving both traditional and creative Korean food.
Food was a higher quality than what you would you get at a typical Koreatown restaurant but it still maintained its authentic Korean taste. Deliciously spicy - not for the fainthearted! Small portion sizes, though. The service was great, waitstaff was very attentive.
Beautiful restaurant with lovely ambiance that is perfect for date night or a quiet night out with a friend. The aesthetic is great and their floral arrangements are great. Service was very subpar. Their food, while large in portions for a tasting menu, is average. Neither totally traditionally nor that creative, I would say it is way too sweet. Overall, was a good experience but would not return.
