Hutch American Cafe - River North
The menu is essentially an updated version of the brunch menu at Hutch on Clark Street. Diners will find sandwiches, omelettes, flatbreads and salads. They also serve smoothies and have a selection of brunch cocktails.
The tidy space is simple and rustic. There’s a chalkboard menu and a painting featuring a version of the Chicago flag with the brunch essentials of a Bloody Mary, coffee, eggs and waffles in place of the stars.
$5 Mimosas, $16 Bottomless Mimosas, $8 Bloody Marys, & Kids Eat Free!
Something was wrong with the kitchen - staff let us know that the oven was out or something else had happened. But before that all staff was unseen for at least 15minutes before coming by to ask how we were or take order.
My experience at hutch was absolutely terrible. They didn’t seat my group until 20 minutes after our reservation, a server didn’t come to our table for another 15 and once he did, he said, “sorry I didn’t know I was supposed to be your server.” He gave us two free appetizers for the wait and we placed our drink order, however, the drinks did not come for another 30 minutes. When the food arrived another 30 minutes later, it was cold, bad, and overall disappointing. I used to love going to hutch, but after this experience I will never return. The waiter was apologetic but completely lackluster, lazy and did nothing to fix the situation. The two cold appetizers that we were give for free did not come close to appeasing the situation. This was a true example of a restaurant doing the opposite of good business.
The food was just okay, it took us over an hour to get our food.. eggs and pancakes so it shouldn't have taken long..the waiter forgot about us we had to flag them down.
Good food and vibes!
Have had brunch here numerous times. Always fantastic food and their coffee is excellent too. Friendly and attentive staff. Highly recommend.
Tbh not the best experience it was terrible food and it’s too loud. The food reallt was poor biscuits and gravy was terrible and the food was cold
Regardless of arriving 5 minutes before my reservation time, with everyone in my party with me, we still had to wait 35 minutes before being seated. Hutch should not be taking reservations that close together if they are anticipating busy day.
My first experience with Hutch was good. But this time the overall experience was pretty bad - food, as well as service. Mimosa carafe was quite flat, the dish came without the extra egg I ordered, bacon was overcooked, the server had to be reminded to bring us silverware, their espresso machine was broken. However the staff were friendly and sweet.
We didn't get served our food for over an hour after we ordered. Even when our food arrived, two orders were completely wrong. My friend ordered a vegan meal and she was given toast with bacon and eggs. Our waiter didn't check on us routinely and kept returning only to confirm our orders because he couldn't remember. The food was subpar and not worth the wait and hassle. We asked to see a manager and no manager ever came to our table. We arrived at 12 and didn't leave until 2 pm because of the slow service. I will not be returning.
Friendly service but terrible food! Would not go back.
I have been to the Hutch in wrigleyville and loved it but this experience here was not good. I had a reservation for 7 people at 12pm and when we arrived were told that open table overbooked them and it was going to be a while. We ended up waiting for over an hour for a table. The first table that was given to us was a table so small it would've only fit about 4 people and they tried to cram us into that table. Once we said we weren't going to sit there, we got a bigger table. We didn't have anyone come to even take our drink orders for at least 25 mins after being sat down. Overall disappointed and probably wont come back to this location.
I went to brunch here with a few friends. The service was not good. We placed our order before the restaurant became crowded, but it took 45 minutes to get our food. It was clear that the waiter forgot to put in our order since people who ordered after us received their food 10-15 minutes before us. Once the food arrived, it was disappointing. The fried eggs were so over-cooked they were rubbery and not edible. We requested new eggs but they were only a minor improvement. I would not suggest coming here.
Server was very busy and it took awhile for us to get drinks and coffee.
This was a nice brunch spot, but I felt the food could've been a bit more creative for the price. I.E. the scrambled eggs were comes hard to the point where the consistency wad compromised. The omelet was a bit overdone as well. Nevertheless, it was tasty and we were satisfied (the cheesy potato casserole made up for the eggs). The ambiance was good, it was homey and comfortable. Our server was spot on and kept checking on us, and bringing what we needed.
Brunch with my sisters! Good food, good value. Love that the have brunch during the week!
The food was really good. Especially the cheese potatoes
Excellent service food was great.
Great Friday Brunch!! My wife and I were staying in the Loop/Theatre district, and wanted to find a brunch place on a Friday. Hutch American Cafe! It was an easy mile walk from our hotel, and well worth the late morning stroll. We were greated warmly when we arrived, and seated right away. We each had the spicy sunset cocktail, a great variation on a tequila sunrise, and a perfect start to our dining experience! We had the breakfast wrap and the pulled bacon benedict! Both were delicious!! The chorizo in the wrap is perfect spice and flavor! The pulled bacon is pulled pork with burnt ends and tons of flavor. The hollandaise sauce was great and poached eggs on top, perfect!! The potato casserole is worth the trip alone....it's included with most breakfast entree's....if not, add it!!! would highly recommend, and will definitely be back!!
Great food. Get the totchos, you won’t regret it. Came here for brunch and had a good tome
We arrived early, so we didn’t mind waiting. They were super-busy. Hostess was very nice and seemed to have an organized system. She was hustling to make sure tables were cleared & cleaned quickly. She was constantly communicating to all the groups waiting for tables providing updates and also brought us a complimentary mini drink because it looked like they were overbooked for awhile.
Our waitress was very nice too. Everyone seems to love their food except me. I actually hated mine (chilaquiles), and they asked me about it. I told them it was fine because I didn’t want to make a big deal about it. They were clearly busy...3 out of 4 plates were great & the apps we ordered we all really enjoyed.
Chilaquiles with avocado was excellent and appreciated the friendly and timely service!
Good brunch- Chris was an excellent server. Funky little place off the beaten path.
Amazing brunch spot. Staff is always super accommodating and food is consistent and delicious. It’s always crowded - I do wish the space wasn’t so cramped but a solid brunch.
Loved it! Food was great as were Tiffany and Anna.
Great breakfast and many different mimosa flavors. Hector took great care of us!
Poached eggs came out cold. Ontario St. omlette was the best order at the table. Service was exceptional though. Didn't have to flag anyone down and were very timely to prepare food.
What a find! Loved it. Perfect brunch if you want to be real and avoid trendy chain restaurants. Service and ambiance were charming and food was great.
Food wasn’t great and took forever. Started with a blood orange mimosa which was the best part of the meal, and the spinach blueberry smoothie which took forever to come out. For food we got the salmon Benedict and the biscuits and fried chicken. Even though we asked for no scallions on the Benedict and indicated a food allergy, it came out with scallions. We sent it back and 10 minutes later it came out with a fresh layer of hollandaise and some of the onions still remaining, now just quietly hidden under the sauce.
The biscuit and chicken didn’t have enough gravy and was just way too much biscuit compared to everything else on the plate.
The whole meal was just ok, but our server was friendly and helpful.
The drinks here are as exciting as you’d expect it, but the FOOD is what really knocked me out. The breakfast wrap was phenomenal, as was the biscuit with fried chicken and gravy. The bloody mary’s didn’t have any garnishing which can be disappointing, but the cheesy potatoes made up for it. All over a great experience in a fun environment.
Service and everything was great. The problem was that no one could really eat their food except the eggs Benedict. We had two avocado toasts but couldn’t even cut through them with a steak knife they were so toasted. The country fried steak was extremely over cooked and the steak sandwich was so chewy we didn’t eat any of it.
We’ve loved the lake view location by this one was a let down for all 5 people
The bottomless mimosa deal cannot be beat! It is really fun for groups and the burger is delicious.
Our waiter, Tyler, was wonderful. He was ready with recommendations and super fun to interact with! Brunch food was great. I was surprised at how large my salmon flatbread was. Carafe drinks were strong; definitely did not skimp and worth the money.
Hutch was amazing! Food was outstanding and the staff were very friendly. Had a reservation for 5 and got to sit by the window. Thank you Hutch, we will be back!
Loved this place! First time there. Fresh orange juice in the cocktails. My breakfast was perfectly cooked. My dad loved his chicken and waffles.’thanks for a great brunch!
Beware of dining on a Sunday morning/afternoon! We had a reservation and the front desk was 20 minutes late seating us, due to an extremely frazzled hostess who was also expected to clean off tables.
From the hordes of people fighting for tables to the screaming children and completely cold food, this was definitely not an experience that left anyone begging for more. In fact, we were begging to get out as soon as we could.
Amazing and the nutella poppers are a must try! Also, the service is second to none.
Overall, the food was bland & the place was busy. The bar was backed up because of the volume of people. They want you to do the bottomless mimosa because it eases the traffic at the bar. We sat a long time waiting for our food (just like everyone else) but it was nice for our waiter to provide free “shooters” while we waited. I wouldn’t recommend this place if you’re looking for tasty food & drink. I would, however, recommend this place if you mostly care about a boozy brunch in a vibrant bar.
Yummy brunch! Delicious mimosas. Tyler our waiter was top-notch!
Great service! There was a small error with our order but the waiter was very quick to fix it. The menu was affordable and had plenty of options. Would highly recommend!
My go to for brunch and mimosas. The server is always very accommodating and friendly.
