Authentic Hungarian cuisine, staff was welcoming and very helpful and service and food were excellent.
Very good food. Friendly service, nice atmosphere. Not fast.
The food was wonderful, and the service was excellent. There is nothing fancy about this place, but if you want a good ethnic meal, it is a place not to overlook.
Our visit to Huszar was, as always, a treat. This time we celebrated a birthday and each of us ordered something different: Chicken Paprikas, Cheese and Bacon Stuffed Pork, and a Hungarian Pork dish (whose name we have forgotten). Since it was a Friday, we ordered the Langos (super delicious bread), as well as the appetizer featuring various cheeses, meat, grapes. We will definitely order that appetizer in the future. The summer- sausage-style meat reminded us of German Rote Wurst. The atmosphere is always casual and much like being invited over to your Hungarian relatives for a meal. By the time we finished the appetizer and entree, only one of us could order dessert, which was Apple Strudel - also very delicious (flaky and filled with apples, not just sticky mush like one often gets at other restaurants). We will be back often.
Such a unique little restaurant. The food was delicious, authentic Hungarian food you won't find anywhere else. The owner was awesome, sitting with us and discussing the dishes and recipes. The bartender/waitress was friendly, and made us feel so welcome. We will definitely return.
Meal was delicious and beautiful presentation. Service was great and price very reasonable. Have already recommended this restaurant to friends and family. Thanks so much for a lovely dining experience.
Huszar is a favorite with us. We love the authentic Hungarian food and the friendly staff. My husband and I shared a platter for 2 that had pork, chicken and steak, plus individual salads. Another in our party enjoyed the chicken paprikas and her husband had a huge salad (which he was generous enough to share with all of us), plus an entree. We ordered the potato pancake to start and shared that among the 4 of us (delicious). We are trying to sample all of the menu items, and so far, everything we've tried has been delicious (meat tender, potatoes crispy on the outside and fluffy on the inside, and cucumber salad delicious). If we go on the weekend, we order the langos (bread) - a real treat.
We have been to Huszar many times and will continue to return for the excellent Hungarian menu and friendly, knowledgeable staff. The only reason I gave the atmosphere 3 stars is that the restaurant resembles nothing so much as a dive bar circa 1968. If you're looking for a white tablecloth experience, this isn't it. But if you want great food and drink at a reasonable price with fun people, this is your new favorite place. Judy and her crew do it right. Depending on the crowd, things can be quiet or raucous. Either way, it's a treat. We'll be back again.
Really delicious and my family is difficult to please.
Really great food, but not the most family friendly. We had reservations for Mother's Day, and I knew it would be a very casual atmosphere, which was totally fine. We were just looking forward to eating good Hungarian food. We were seated at a table in front of 2 large TV's by the bar, because the server said that the 3 booths would not be available. One of the TV's was playing a home improvement show. Okay! One was playing a video game where things were being constantly shot. Not exactly mother's day fare. Naturally, my 3 year old's eyes were glued to this. I asked politely if the channel could be changed, as NOBODY else was watching it. We were the only people sitting there. I was told no, that the owner would be very upset at this. Huh? Endured this for 90 minutes.
Excellent food. Very courteous staff. Authentic Pittsburgh atmosphere. Highly recommended.
The food was extremely tasty, and most portions were of good size. The server was patient in explaining the various dishes and answering all of our questions. It was also nice that the owner/manager(?) inquired how our meals were upon us leaving. We will be back!
Huszar has quickly become our favorite restaurant. We use every excuse to take friends there and introduce them to the delicious Hungarian dishes. We all opted for the Hungarian version of schnitzel and chose to add the recommended cucumber salad (fantastic). Since we visited on a Friday evening, we were also able to get the Langos (bread), which is so tasty. Only one person had enough room for dessert, but really enjoyed it. Portions are large, food is always delicious (isn't everything with paprika on it?) and prices are reasonable. This family-owned and run restaurant is a gem on the North Side.
I gave my wife a choice of every restaurant in the city for her birthday dinner. She picked Huszar. What a great choice. If you’re looking for an unpretentious home cooked truly traditional Hungarian meal, you can’t do better.
What a wonderful place to eat. I had the opportunity to visit BudaPest last year. The thing I loved most was the cuisine. Huszar brought back this wonderful memory for me! I ordered the Paprika Chicken over dumplings. It was delicious! The owner was very welcoming and gave us a great introduction to their heritage and menu. I will be returning again soon to try the Goulash!
Special place as it’s deeply linked to Judy’s family roots in Hungary. If you’re able, chat with Judy and learn more about the place and her heart.
We had the recommended dishes and loved them all. It’s a bit heavy on sour cream for our tastes but we could easily remove that. The food is tasty and, the promise, authentic.
That night, they had only one cook, and they had run out of the beer I wanted.
Service was slow because the cook was very busy.
Food is simple and good.
I felt the waitress could've waited on us a bit more, though.
We are not locals, but if we were, this would be a regular restaurant for us! This is real comfort food in a cozy setting, a little bit out of the way to get to, but I think that is part of the charm. We started with the Meat crepe - the filling and sauce was melt in the mouth, followed by the special which was breaded pork and nokedli with mushroom sauce, also cooked to perfection. Lastly, my husband had the apple strudel and I had the Gundel Palacsinta, the crepes filling was divine. The menu is excellent. So much I would like to try. If you like non pretentious good tasting home style food, this is the place for you :) The staff were friendly and cheerful, always checking to make sure we were happy.
We love Huszars because we love Hungarian food!!! And they make it just like Grandma used to make it for us!!
Great Hungarian dinners at Huszar. We really enjoyed everything we ate - the food is fantastic! It's unabashedly a corner bar - it's not disguised as a restaurant, but has a long bar and a lot of tables. Kids are fine. You should order a bunch of stuff and share it with your friends!
The food was good and the staff was helpful in their recommendations on what to try and took time w/ each of us to find out what we liked. Do not be afraid to try something new in the way of an ethnic food as there are dishes here that while Hungarian are not too spicy or unusual. My wife even commented that some of the dishes reminded her of German or Polish dishes ( sorry to the Hungarians out there ... L O L ) so if your good w/ those types of dishes you are good here. Even if not used to that type of food I am sure you will find something you like. We will go back.
Super great food, nice selection of beer and wine and the atmosphere was nice. Had a nice time for date night!
The atmosphere is relaxed; the food well prepared and delicious; and the wait staff friendly. This is a must return to restaurant.
Huszar is a lovely neighborhood restaurant. The food was good, and there were some very good Hungarian wines on the menu. Service was warm, friendly, and efficient. Dessert was excellent. I’ll definitely be back.
Best restaurant with great food. Love the appetizer and cakes too as well the main course. Good Hungarian wine!!
A feel good place! If you appreciate the neighborhood venue with top notch people and food, Look no further. We brought friends there because of the great food and experience, They were equally pleased. We will be back :)
Food was very good, portions nicely sized. Small venue that fills up fast, reservations are recommended.
The most authentic Hungarian food I've had outside of Hungary. We will be back
The food was beyond delicious! Huszar is not a large place, so reservations are definitely recommended. Can't wait to go back and work our way through the menu. Parking is a bit of a challenge.
Our reserved table was waiting for us when we arrived. It was a very busy evening for the wait staff. Food was delicious, albeit a bit slow in arriving based on the number of people dining that evening. Every seat and table was full. We were on somewhat of a time schedule due to concert tickets, so our dessert was eaten rather hurriedly. But it was delicious!! In spite of our time restraints, I would still eat here and recommend it to everyone. Thanks.
This was our first visit. We were early diners so we could relax and enjoy before our show. The wait staff was very helpful explaining menu items. The taste of Eastern Europe is not readily found in or area and we truly enjoyed our experience. We will be back.
I have been wanting to try Huszar for awhile. The food was delicious. Service was very good and price is affordable. They apparently have a gypsy string band occasionally... that would’ve made the experience top notch. It does need some Hungarian or Croatian music I think. They had the TVs on at the bar. I love supporting independent local restaurants and this was a good choice. The parking is on the street parking across the wY or on the the parallel street but it was easy to find. Please support Huszar.... you won’t be disappointed
Great little place. Great atmosphere. Good food. Waitress was attentive and friendly. Wine is a little pricey. Definitely going back.
This was our second time visiting Huszar and we were not disappointed. Judy the owner is welcoming and accommodating, and the food is outstanding! Our entire party enjoyed our experience and we will be back soon! It was worth our 6 hour trip from Upstate NY.
This is a great family restaurant with authentic Eastern European cuisine. Staff are super friendly and attentive. Food is delicious, although my piece of chocolate torte was dry. Probably from being in the cooler case too long. Everything else was wonderful and we can’t wait to try it again.
From start to finish this place was amazing. We were warmly welcomed. Each course was delicious. Leave room for desert.
Good, heartysuthentic Hungarian food. Save room for dessert.
The food was delicious. The atmosphere was great - very casual and comfortable. The staff was very nice. They were very busy, but the service was good. We were disappointed that they were out of potato pancakes (!) and their special fried bread served only on the weekend. We’ll have to go back for lunch to try those. The desserts were amazing.
We enjoyed the feeling of having a home cooked meal. The offerings were traditional Hungarian food, which is precisely what we were looking for. We just had a yearning for chicken paprikash, and that is what we ordered and ate. Prices were fine. Dessert strudel was a bit dry and not crispy enough.
Tasty food, reasonable portions, quick and friendly service, good prices, limited number of seats, great desserts, feel like you’re family.
I almost don't want to write this review, because I don't want to give away the secret! I just love this place. It puts me back in Budapest...the langos from the market, the cakes from the cafes, the paprika cream sauce, the wine called bulls blood. The service was warm and attentive. The desserts are some of the best around. If you're tired of the "hip" eateries and want comforting food the way people really eat food and a journey to another culture then I recommend this restaurant.
