About Hugo's Restaurant
Founded in 1988, Hugo’s restaurant sits at the edge of Portland’s historic Old Port district. In its third generation of ownership Hugo’s continues to offer refined and delicious cuisine. We source our produce, game, fish and meat locally—we’re lucky to work with Maine’s best ingredients. With our tasting menu, you can join us for a couple of courses or an extravagant feast!
Like our pantry, our dining room is dependent on Maine’s best: sculptors, painters, carpenters, and iron-workers collaborated to create a space that evokes our location. Wrapped around our open kitchen, a large red birch bar occupies much of the interior. With its exposed brick walls, soft wood tones, and plush leather, the dining room’s modest luxury sets the stage for an unforgettable meal.

This is one of the best meals I've had in Portland. The food was creative and well-done. The service was just the right balance of professional/attentive and friendly. The food may be a bit too "exotic" (e.g. duck tongues) for some, but it was a nice balance of traditional and creative. Yum!
just extraordinary! all my wife's dietary concerns were handled perfectly. my beet soup with beef shank and beef chicharon was just an unexpected treat. my whole bass was cooked perfectly and the baby bokchoy and sticky rice maed it just scumpcous . the real beauty was our apple desert with a rose on top, but the rose was thinly sliced fresh apple slices to appear as a rose, just wonderful!
As usual, Hugo's delivers. My recommendation is go for the tasting menu, and let their excellent chefs have their way with you! It's an almost-endless stream of beautiful, delicious morsels.
Give yourself plenty of time to enjoy, though - dinner with the tasting menu takes about 2.5 hours. Living in New Jersey, I don't get to Portland very often, but when I do, dinner at Hugo's is not an option, it's a requirement.
I went to Hugo's with my wife for our 20th wedding anniversary and we couldn't have been happier. We had the chef's tasting menu combined with the wine tasting. While not cheap, it was excellent and was just what we were hoping for. The food was extraordinary and the wines were very out of the ordinary. I would highly recommend Hugo's.
Huge disappointment. We had been to Hugo's once before and had enjoyed the experience in spite of the huge price tag (see earlier review).... This time, service was truly terrible (first time I leave a zero % tip anywhere in the world in the last 30 years but I think that was fully deserved....) - The sommelier showed little interest in helping us pick a wine to go with the generously priced $90 tasting menu and never checked on us during the evening. The waiter who seemed to be in charge of our table had a serious attitude problem. Once we'd given our order for the very generously priced $90 tasting menu, His Highness disappeared and we never saw him again...... I had the audacity to enquire about the perceived slowness of service and his reply was basically dismissive and rude. He then reappeared magically at check time to let us know that there had been a "clerical error" and we needed to pay more, no apologies, no explanations, no questions as to whether we had enjoyed our dinner.... I can't even say I enjoyed the food as the delivery was so incredibly pompous, slow, indifferent and contemptuous. I don't know who Hugo's management and staff think they are but I think they seriously need to rethink their place in the world of food.... I have dined at many top class restaurants around the world and am not going to take this attitude from a 2nd class establishment who somehow think they're Michelin grade. Worst dinner experience in Portland ever.
To start with, the tasting menu at Hugos is an experience not a dinner. The menu consists of 9 small courses accompanied by 9 wine pairings. Amazing. We were there over 3 hours.
Hugos is small with a great ambiance - not very noisy. You can talk to each other.
Service is out of this world. The staff knows the food and the wine and treats you like royalty. I'd rate it the best I have ever experienced. You do not have a server - you have a staff that takes care of you!
The tasting menu is eclectic. Portions are small but add up over the night. Everything was very good. A couple of standouts - a piece of cod between crispy paper thin toasts (think an ice cream sandwich) that was unbelievable, fried pork balls/fritters that were crunchy and tasty, cod fillets, and cucumber ice cream (amazing). If it matters many of the items are raw or extremely rare! But those were some of the best.
The tasting menu with wine is expensive but overall worth the cost if you simply enjoy the experience.
We've visited Hugo's a number of times over the years and it never fails to disappoint. It's as strong now as it was 8 years ago when we first visited. Blind tasting menus are a lot of fun - I could tell you what we had, but it changes continually. Count on it being seasonal and unique. Wine pairings were a particular hit this time around.
Wonderful restaurant. Staff was lovely and made our anniversary celebration feel very special. Very unique food preparation. We felt like we tried so many different or uniquly prepared foods. Food was prepared & presented in such a delicious & appealing way. It is a wonderful dining experience made more so by the fantastic staff. We highly recommend Hugo's .
we enjoyed our meal and my wife truly enjoyed her cocktail. The special touches were fantastic, and sitting at the counter allowed us to watch the chef's at work. All service people were very friendly and professional. Food portions were not huge, but they gave you some extras, before, during and after the meal, so that made up for a lot.
If you're a foodie with a wide taste palette and the combination of complex flavors excites you, you'll enjoy this. The food is prepared in the open by a skilled and talented crew.
The menu is pretty limited but artful.
My tastes don't run like the first paragraph and I didn't enjoy this dining experience.
25th anniversary celebration. Delicious, creative and thoughtful food. LOVED the whole black bass, honeycrisp apple appetizer, and the chicken. Gin & Tonic dessert was great. Patrick provided spot-on service and guidance. It was evident how much all staff took their work seriously and enjoyed what they did. Fun to watch the food being prepared.
I am still recommending Hugo's as it has potential to be a great Portland restaurant but it has to work out some kinks. Great atmosphere, good food presentation, interesting menu, good drinks. However our experience could have been improved by the waiter providing clearer answers to our questions on the size of entree portions (small) and not encouraging us to order additional food (small plates) as we indicated we were hungry. To top it off our entree was very good but cold.
Second time as good as the first. Outstanding restaurant. This was a birthday celebration and so we splashed out on the tasting menu - one vegetarian and one not! Food was sophisticated and very flavorful. One of the best food experiences outside of Michelin (Hugo's deserves at least one star).
The four of us went for the tasting menu and wine paring. The many courses (they said 9, but we think it was more like 12) just seemed to keep coming. The ingredients, prep and display not to mention taste were all exceptional. The waiter provided very detailed and interesting descriptions on the wines (kept my wife water glass full which is key) which were indeed unique and very good. They accommodated the one special diet request for the tasting menu which was also great. Overall - it was expensive $$$$ but Very Good. Would certainly return for similar affair.
