Founded in 1988, Hugo’s restaurant sits at the edge of Portland’s historic Old Port district. In its third generation of ownership, Hugo’s continues to offer refined and delicious cuisine. We source our produce, game, fish and meat locally—we’re lucky to work with Maine’s best ingredients. With our menu, you can join us for a couple of courses or an extravagant feast! Like our pantry, our dining room is dependent on Maine’s best: sculptors, painters, carpenters, and iron-workers collaborated to create a space that evokes our location. Wrapped around our open kitchen, a large red birch bar occupies much of the interior. With its exposed brick walls, soft wood tones, and plush leather, the dining room’s modest luxury sets the stage for an unforgettable meal.

Fantastic. Some people have called it pretentious, but do not be fooled. Wonderfully executed food by people who care. Laid back, but upscale.

The place is lovely and our server was excellent. Overall, the food was good, but the starters were far better than the entrees. my dates pasta dish was way, way, way too salty and I got lamb chops that were almost all fat and no meat.

I’m hoping it was just a bad night for them. It was not what I expected, unfortunately.

This restaurant was the most delightful food experience I’ve ever had in Portland. The food,atmosphere, and staff was wonderful. I would highly recommend the blind tasking menu to everyone!

A M A Z I N G. Hugo's has evolved into a flagship restaurant in Portland. The kind of place that makes you say "let's go up to Portland for the day so we can eat at Hugo's". Third visit to the restaurant and the food has evolved from interesting and artful food into confident James Beard/NYC Michelin Star-level dishes that have visual appeal and complex flavors. The salted cod "fish and chips" is really soulful --there was not a misstep in the tasting menu and the flavors of each bite are amazing: scallops, halibut, tofu and steak plates are all memorable. Notable too are the wine menu and the excellent coffee service. Great job to the Hugo's staff.

The food is excellent. The atmosphere, in my opinion leaves a lot to be desired. The booths do not reflect the quality of the restaurant, in my opinion. On top of my criticism of the booths, we had the booth, which was all the way to the back of the restaurant and we looked directly down the long hallway through the various kitchens, prominent in the view were the trash cans.

Flavor explosion! This was an amazing culinary experience. My husband and I tried the tasting menu, recommended by the waiter. We ate things we never would have ordered and were delighted. Who would think coconut sorbet would pair so well with pickled carrots? I recommend this restaurant highly and will look forward to returning.

We liked everything about out dinner at Hugo's. The food was delicious, imaginative, and beautifully presented. The service was warm, welcoming, and informative. Eating at the counter is the best for enjoying the meal and appreciating some of what goes into each dish. The savory and dessert staff were enthusiastic about the dishes they were preparing and happy to tell us what went into each item.

This is our favorite restaurant.

Unbelievable experience, with state of the art food prep and some of the best food I’ve tried. Hugo’s was spot-on and the 9-course tasting was mind blowing. I will be back next time I’m In Portland.

Went with another couple and were delighted with every part of our experience. Loved the atmosphere, cozy booths around a big open air kitchen. A lot of amazing options on the menu made it hard to decide, but happily everyone in our group chose something different so we all got to taste. Everything was spectacular. Also got some extras which were so fun and similarly spectacular. Every course and every dish were stellar, all the way to dessert. So many diverse flavors, every dish felt unique. We all agreed this was one of our favorite meals that we’d ever had in Portland - this says a lot! I can understand why the chef at Hugo’s won a Beard award.

One of the best meals we have ever had. The food was delicious and inventive. The tasting menu is expensive but completely worth it. The service was outstanding. I honestly can’t say enough good things about this place.

Great location and fine ambience, however, we were left outside in the cold/rain until EXACTLY 5:30 pm. (It would have been considerate to let us in a few minutes early and have us wait in the reception area while final preparations were being made.)

The food was pretentious without cause, the portions were minuscule and the staff was a bit surly.

Love sitting at the counter. This gives the opportunity to chat with the kitchen team. The food presentation, variety and quality are wonderful. I think the best in Portland. Been to Hugo’s many times...prefer the spontaneous visit afforded by Open Table. I have found the Hugo’s team to be very friendly, approachable and knowledgeable about the food and drink options.

Hugo's is a wonderful restaurant. The food is terrific, always imaginative, carefully prepared and cooked, perfectly flavored, and leaves you feeling good at the end of the meal. Eating at the counter fives you a front row seat on how your meal and drinks are put together.

The floor, and kitchen, teams are welcoming, warm, and very informative.

Seth the sommelier recommended a very appropriate wine for our group. Jordan our waiter was incredibly knowledgeable about our food and respective libation accompaniments. Very attentive without being intrusive. We will return!

The chefs tasting menu was the best meal I’ve had in a long time. Great flavors and perfectly portioned. A+ on uni and tamale. Service was perfect, attentive and informative, but not overbearing or excessive. We were impressed. Good work.

We went to Hugo’s during Maine Restaurant Week. Staff is friendly and well informed about their menu and passionate about their food. We order the 3 course prefix meal. There were two offerings for each course and we tried every available. Food was well prepared and well balanced. Highlights included the citrus salad and monkfish. Dessert was a reimagined “nutter butter” and it was delicious.

A dinner at Hugo’s is always memorable.

The menu is constantly changing, reflecting what is currently available locally,

We had the tasting menu which allowed us to enjoy the full range of the chefs talents.

Each course is a new experience, delicious and beautifully plated.

While we did not do the available wine pairings, the glass pours were excellent and paired perfectly with the various courses.

Overall a wonderful experience.

Visited Hugo's during Restaurant Week, but Jordan sold us on the more elaborate Chef's Tasting menu. The tasting menu consisted of 7 small plates - including 2 desserts - which, by the end of the meal proved to be completely filling. Some dishes, like the duck and the cod were terrific and some were less memorable, but overall we had a great experience at Hugo's. Oh! I don't want to forget to rave about the counter stools...phenomenally comfortable! Also want to rave about Jordan, our server and bartender. The cocktails he made and the service he provided were stellar.

Fabulous! Great food, intricately prepared, with wonderful, attentive service. The renovated bar area overlooking the kitchen is beautiful. Seating was surprisingly comfortable and the noise level was very low. The menu for Restaurant week and drinks were spot on. What more could we ask for?

An amazing dining experience! We went for our anniversary and couldn't have had a better meal. We did the blind chef tasting and it was phenomenal! I would definitely recommend for a special occasion.
