About Hugo's Restaurant
Founded in 1988, Hugo’s restaurant sits at the edge of Portland’s historic Old Port district. In its third generation of ownership Hugo’s continues to offer refined and delicious cuisine. We source our produce, game, fish and meat locally—we’re lucky to work with Maine’s best ingredients. With our tasting menu, you can join us for a couple of courses or an extravagant feast!
Like our pantry, our dining room is dependent on Maine’s best: sculptors, painters, carpenters, and iron-workers collaborated to create a space that evokes our location. Wrapped around our open kitchen, a large red birch bar occupies much of the interior. With its exposed brick walls, soft wood tones, and plush leather, the dining room’s modest luxury sets the stage for an unforgettable meal.

Hugo's Restaurant Ratings and Reviews
I can highly recommend the chef's tasting. Very creative dishes. Chef is not afraid to take risks which I like. If you are looking to just fill your belly with some predictable chow it probably makes sense to look for an alternative. Some reviewers are stuck on the portion sizes. I found the chef's tasting to be more than enough when you work your way through the total tasting. Each course was clearly inspired and with the open kitchen we were able to appreciate the focus and attention to the execution of the chef's vision. The wine pairing was worth it. excellent selections that were interesting, uncommon and all wonderfully paired. Our server Patrick was attentive but not overly intrusive. All the staff seemed focused and positive with a sense of alignment on the restaurants vision and purpose.
The most creative and extraordinary food prepared by fine culinary experts and served in the most attentive style! This was the best dining in my life and I have been to some of the top restaurants in the world. It is the finest food set in a warm and friendly casual atmosphere. Perfect pairing in every way.
Well the food was great and expertly prepared, the portions were almost insultingly small. While I'm not looking for a Cheesecake Factory experience, I expect my main entree to fill up more than a quarter of the plate. I was warned that it was overpriced for a tiny amount of food but we decided to try it because we loved Even Tide. The atmosphere is great. The staff is great. The food tastes great. But, you will leave wanting more.
We had the tasting menu along with the wine pairing. Both were good, but nothing all that memorable. The food was prepared well and was mostly aesthetically pleasing to look at, but some of the dishes lacked needed acidity or spice and there needed to be more in the way of savory offerings. The wines were good, but at times the pairings did not work as well as intended. The sommelier was pleasant and knowledgable, but the rest of the staff that served us seemed to lack the necessary culinary knowledge to really make a tasting menu experience "pop". And the courses came out a bit too quickly, for our taste.
Overall, it is not a bad value for a nine-course tasting menu ($90 apiece) and wine pairing ($75 apiece), and if I lived in Portland I would visit again, but I would likely not opt for the tasting menu.
One of the best restaurant in the USA we have eaten at. Creative an extremely delicious tasting menu. Every dish was masterfully prepared with a great combination of ingredients. The tasting menu is one of the best ways to evaluate the team of chefs....and we give them a 10+
This was a very expensive restaurant offering a multi-course tasting menu with unique, creative dishes served in very small portions and accompanied by good wines. Despite spending $360, our appetites were not exactly satiated. The pace was appropriately leisurely. The service was friendly and attentive. The room was too cold for my wife.
One of the more outstanding culinary experiences I've ever had. Absolutely incredible and the service was top flight in every way. I can't believe I haven't been there in over 20 years. My how Hugo's has grown and lifted the entire dining experience.
Can't wait to enjoy it again.
Hugos now has the option of a blind tasting menu or ordering a la carte. We did the tasting menu. Food was incredible! Very creative, exquisitely prepared, top-notch ingredients. Servers knowledgeable and efficient. A suggestion: if someone in your party is averse to certain foods, might be better to order off the menu, as it is a blind tasting menu you will have little control over the selections. Otherwise, the tasting menu is the perfect way to experience what this restaurant has to offer.
Excellent TINY portions. Food was delicious and beautifully presented. But when they brought over our dinners, we almost burst out laughing. The pork tenderloin was literally 2-3 inches round. A few radishes and whatnot were scattered around the plate. The torchio pasta was a child's portion. They try to push the tasting menu at $90/person. I am petite and do not require large portions but this was crazy!
Was taken aback when told they have bar seating, but you know what, the concept works. As you wait, you are watching the culinary team craft yours and the other guests meals. We did the blind tasting with wine pairings. The food was creative, unique, and delicious. The paired wines worked perfectly. The staff made this trip into Portland well worth the drive. We live in the NY metro area and if we ever vacation in Maine again, Hugo's will be the first dinner reservation we make.
Year after year Hugo's never disappoints, it remains our top dining experience anywhere (and we live half-time in NYC). The food, service, value and ambience are just excellent, without qualification or reservation. Reserved parking across the street, quiet ambiance and stellar service from start to finish, this is Portland at its very best.
We had tasting menu and wine pairing which were both outstanding. Staff is friendly and knowledgeable. Food comes at a good pace; enough to be satisfied but not stuffed. Sat in booth seats which are nice and private but a bit chilly (due to kitchen venting) so bring a sweater.
Amazing meal! All the items we got were delicious and so well paired with everything on the plate. Some creative food combos too. Can't wait to come back when in town again and plan to do the chefs tasting menu. Go hungry!
I am on a tour of the country. I research the top restaurants to eat at when I travel. As a New Yorker, it can be hard to match the service and food that some 5 star restaurants provide. Hugo's was fantastic. The staff was great and the food was superb. If I ever make it back to Portland, I will definitely dine there. I take customer service very seriously. There are way too many options so service is what makes a Place stand out to me. I interacted with just about every person who worked their. They made me feel at home.
Andrew and Mike continue to surprise and entertain. Nominally, they won their James Beard award for Eventide. But the creative flair and attention to detail applied at Hugo's are even more impressive.
The canvas at Hugo's is broader as it is not just a seafood restaurant. And the brush strokes are exquisite.
