Founded in 1988, Hugo’s restaurant sits at the edge of Portland’s historic Old Port district. In its third generation of ownership, Hugo’s continues to offer refined and delicious cuisine. We source our produce, game, fish and meat locally—we’re lucky to work with Maine’s best ingredients. With our menu, you can join us for a couple of courses or an extravagant feast!

Like our pantry, our dining room is dependent on Maine’s best: sculptors, painters, carpenters, and iron-workers collaborated to create a space that evokes our location. Wrapped around our open kitchen, a large red birch bar occupies much of the interior. With its exposed brick walls, soft wood tones, and plush leather, the dining room’s modest luxury sets the stage for an unforgettable meal.

Hugo's is a wonderful restaurant. The food is terrific, always imaginative, carefully prepared and cooked, perfectly flavored, and leaves you feeling good at the end of the meal. Eating at the counter fives you a front row seat on how your meal and drinks are put together.

The floor, and kitchen, teams are welcoming, warm, and very informative.

Seth the sommelier recommended a very appropriate wine for our group. Jordan our waiter was incredibly knowledgeable about our food and respective libation accompaniments. Very attentive without being intrusive. We will return!

The chefs tasting menu was the best meal I’ve had in a long time. Great flavors and perfectly portioned. A+ on uni and tamale. Service was perfect, attentive and informative, but not overbearing or excessive. We were impressed. Good work.

We went to Hugo’s during Maine Restaurant Week. Staff is friendly and well informed about their menu and passionate about their food. We order the 3 course prefix meal. There were two offerings for each course and we tried every available. Food was well prepared and well balanced. Highlights included the citrus salad and monkfish. Dessert was a reimagined “nutter butter” and it was delicious.

We had a restaurant week pre set meal and it was very creative and delicious. The combinations were extremely creative. We were very happy with our meal.

A dinner at Hugo’s is always memorable.

The menu is constantly changing, reflecting what is currently available locally,

We had the tasting menu which allowed us to enjoy the full range of the chefs talents.

Each course is a new experience, delicious and beautifully plated.

While we did not do the available wine pairings, the glass pours were excellent and paired perfectly with the various courses.

Overall a wonderful experience.

Visited Hugo's during Restaurant Week, but Jordan sold us on the more elaborate Chef's Tasting menu. The tasting menu consisted of 7 small plates - including 2 desserts - which, by the end of the meal proved to be completely filling. Some dishes, like the duck and the cod were terrific and some were less memorable, but overall we had a great experience at Hugo's. Oh! I don't want to forget to rave about the counter stools...phenomenally comfortable! Also want to rave about Jordan, our server and bartender. The cocktails he made and the service he provided were stellar.

Fabulous! Great food, intricately prepared, with wonderful, attentive service. The renovated bar area overlooking the kitchen is beautiful. Seating was surprisingly comfortable and the noise level was very low. The menu for Restaurant week and drinks were spot on. What more could we ask for?

An amazing dining experience! We went for our anniversary and couldn't have had a better meal. We did the blind chef tasting and it was phenomenal! I would definitely recommend for a special occasion.

My husband and I came here for a belated Valentine's Day dinner and it did not disappoint. Our waiter assisted us in selecting the perfect wine to compliment our tastes and meal, which we opted for the chef's tasting menu. I don't usually eat seafood, but I was not concerned since these were small plates and the food was so delicious that my favorite plate was actually a seafood plate! We will definitely be coming back again for future special occasions.

Excelent dinner. All the dishes were very creative and delicious. The personnel is nice and know their crafts, and clearly they enjoy their job. We always go back.

It was Valentine's Day so the restaurant was very busy, yet service was efficient, friendly and everyone took the time to chat with us and explain how the dishes had been prepared. We had the Chef's menu and from beginning to end we were approaching absolute perfection. Not one false note that we could remember, to me the highlights were the monkfish and the very thinly cut and perfectly cooked steak bites. Even the sweet dessert on a Paris Brest theme was intriguing and delicious. A night to remember.

Went to Hugo’s for Valentines Day, got two seats at the bar which overlooks the amazing kitchen. Almost think the bar is preferred over a table. We have been many times before and often have had the tasting menu, but we didn’t want that much food or such a long evening so started with some prosecco then al la carte and we each had amazing app and entree (I had the pork and my wife had the cod). The bottle of new world Pinot Noir recommended was also nice following the Prosecco with dinner. We skipped dessert to have something back at the Press Hotel…
The atmosphere is very good, cozy and welcoming and staff very well trained/knowledgable and friendly. The noise level is pretty low, so, it's easy to have a conversation. I tend to go here more for special occasions, but sitting at the bar makes it seem more like a neighborhood spot I could stop by more often - and think I will!

The service was impeccable and the staff was so accommodating to our requests and dietary restrictions - even with the tasting menu. Hugo’s was the perfect spot to celebrate my engagement with my fiancé. The food was great, and the dessert was in a level all it’s own. A great experience and we can’t wait to go back!

My wife & I tried the tasting menu. The food was definitely good, a few outstanding dishes, but overall felt like it lacked inventiveness. We have been going to Hugo's for years and expect both great quality and an inventive menu. The service was very good, though we were passed between a few different servers and it felt a little disorienting. We were sitting at the bar and would have preferred a table for ease of conversation. When making reservations ahead of time, it showed no tables available but there were tables open the whole time we were there. Overall, good experience as always, not 100% sure it was worth the price and I think they could kick it in a little with experimental approaches to their menu... I have certainly seen them do this in the past.

This was my very first experience dining at Hugo‘s where my husband and I left so underwhelmed. Sarah at the front is always a joy and so attentive. Our waiter was friendly, knowledgeable and offered us 2 exceptional wine selections by the glass. The amuse was a piece of perfectly fried eel - a masterpiece.
My husband ordered the steak tartare for his appetizer, it was the highlight of the meal! My scallop ceviche was good but lacked acidity and salt. The entrees were probably the most disappointing dishes - the pasta was overly salty and oily. My Cod was apparently steamed and although the rest of the plate was beautifully presented it was super bland, and just didn’t make sense flavor-wise. The two deserts we ordered were exceptional, and allowed the meal to end on a positive. For years, Hugo’s has always been the restaurant we are most proud of in Portland - sophisticated, but relaxed- amazingly trained staff who truly care about the customer and have an eye for detailed attention. This visit wasn’t their best. Hopefully it will be better next time.

We love eating at Hugo's whenever we can. The food is always delicious and imaginative. As importantly, the kitchen and floor team are very welcoming, interesting to chat with, very accommodating, and overall terrific hosts.

Wonderful food and unique dishes! We came in two nights before after a disappointing experience at another restaurant and we got lucky enough that two seats had just opened at the bar. The dining experience was so great we made a reservation to come back. Loved it again! We are adding this to our list of must visit restaurants (which also includes Eventide next door) for our future trips to Portland.

Their attention to detail is always rewarding for the senses. We've been going for years and the chefs and staff never fail at thrilling us with each plate. If you are ready for a delicious adventure let the chefs cook for you. The tasting menu is the way to go.

Celebrating my daughter's birthday at Hugo's in Portland. Such a treat tried the Scallop Bolognese among other amazing dishes, we loved everything. A lovely dining experience in a cozy environment and fabulous wine.

This was the most outstanding food I've had in Portland! I spent $300 for only two people but I felt it was worth every penny. And I must say, the service was one of the highlights of the experience, as well as what seemed like an intentionally timing between the courses.
