Hugo's Restaurant- Portland
Like our pantry, our dining room is dependent on Maine’s best: sculptors, painters, carpenters, and iron-workers collaborated to create a space that evokes our location. Wrapped around our open kitchen, a large red birch bar occupies much of the interior. With its exposed brick walls, soft wood tones, and plush leather, the dining room’s modest luxury sets the stage for an unforgettable meal.

Outstanding all around. We got the chef tasting which was phenomenal. Will absolutely be back.
Don’t go to this restaurant without eating first. Beautiful presentation but not enough real food.
Nice quiet early evening dinner to celebrate a belated birthday. We were stated off with glasses of champagne and then had chefs tasting menu. 9 courses of scrumptious. Paired this with a nice bottle of Tuscan. My wife received a small birthday cake with candle. Service was impeccable, food was seasoned perfectly, menu was varied and designed for foodie exploration of taste buds. Nice quiet booth to share on a frigid evening in Portland, bar/counter looked very engaging to share dinner with others and friendly staff. Hope to return soon.
Our experience at Hugo's was amazing. I went there with my friend for his birthday and it was the best decision I made. We had the tasting menu and all the plates were exceptionally tasteful. The service was great, very friendly, professional and knowledgeable people. We sat at the counter and had the opportunity to watch as the chefs prepared our food and you can tell they do what they do with heart and its very exiting to create the dishes for us.
Chef’s selection option was amazing. Must try.
Not our first visit.. a MUST when we go to Portland.. always fabulous
Loved it. Would go again and recommend to friends.
Delicious and inventive food done with care , and a great selection of unusual wines. Good knowledge of international cuisine techniques and ingredients, that they apply on their own way on local produce in and delicious and inventive way. They really care about their craft. I do not recomendad to avoid to overcrowd the restaurant for me . Keep the gem hidden for crowds please . Service is great and ambiance is unpretentious and comfy. Thanks again!
I brought my husband as a surprise for his birthday. He is a foodie! I asked for bar seating so we could watch the food/dessert preparation. We ended up getting the chef's choice menu with the wine pairings. It was perfect in every way. Everyone was attentive, knowledgeable and friendly.
The food was great and the staff were amazing and knowledgeable. Patrick made the evening even more special for us. I will absolutely eat there again!
Hugo’s is our go-to spot to celebrate our anniversary. The tasting menu is amazing... round after round of creative, innovative dishes. The staff is accommodating, friendly and engaging. Well worth the price...
Amazing food! I dined on the blind tasting for my birthday and found everything to be topnotch. However, the service left something to be desired due to the snobbery of the waiters, waitresses, and especially that middle aged hostess. It's not pleasant to spend this amount of money only to be treated poorly. Overall, would come again with caution...
Dessert was trying to hard and not particularly tasty.
Tremendous as always. Patrick and the front of the house have phenomenal knowledge of the cuisine. We brought a new couple and they were completely wowed by the whole experience. Kudos once again to Hugo’s for another memorable chef tasting menu meal and experience.
Wonderful experience. We have been there before and always do the chefs tasting. Interesting variety of dishes in small quantities. Very relaxed setting. Servers were very helpful friendly and knowledgeable.
My favorite restaurant in USA. The chefs are true culinary artists. They are consistently excellent. Have gone several times. Good work. I give you all three M(e) stars
This was our 30th anniversary and it was a great evening
I was hesitant to go here because of the negative reviews but I heard the food was excellent, which would put weigh the snobby service in my opinion.
I would argue that the service was actually incredible! We had a reservation well-in advance & I made a note in the booking that this was a special occasion, for my husbands birthday. We were seated at the bar, which was really cozy & oversaw the food plating.
We were created with champagne (birthday recognition). We went with the Chefs Farm-to-table Tasting & it was absolutely incredible. They accommodated dietary preference, letting us substitute dessert rounds with additional savory plates. Service was great. Cocktails were great. Highly recommended.
Hugo’s did not fail
We both had the chiefs tasting menu and it was fantastic
Nine separate small plate meals that were beyond belief
Service was top notch!
Will repeat for sure
Thanks for a great dinner!
Hugo’s is on par with some of the best Michelin star restaurants in NYC.
Hugo's continues to set a high standard with excellent, creative food, top service and a perfect atmosphere in which to enjoy food and conversation. Can't recommend it enough!
My fifth time visiting. Once again superior to any of my top tasting menu experiences in Boston. Staff is attentive, friendly, and engaging. Pairings are off the beaten path, but also excellent wines, and beware the generous pours!
Stellar food and service. One of the best meals we've had in a long time. Highly recommended.
The presentation to food plates is really enjoyable. Very special chef inspired dishes. We had the monkfish which was perfectly cooked and presented with a tangy relish, bacon grits and Brussel sprouts. We added the wild mushroom tempura as a sharing plate and it was the perfect amount to allow room for the corn pan cotta for dessert. Outstanding in every way.
Service and wine pairing was excellent. Tried the tasting menu and some of the food was underwhelming but generally good. I think the tasting menu was a little overpriced for what you get.
Our favorite restaurant by far! People are awesome that work there, cannot say enough about the food, tasting menu is always a hit! Can’t wait to go back!
The food was amazing!!! We had the tasting menu with the wine pairing and every bite was divine! I have a gluten allergy and a by-valve seafood allergy and they were super accommodating! The wine selection was wonderful and paired well with each course. The courses were perfect size and walked you through salad, veggies and meat options. The dessert was to die for. My husband and I really enjoyed sitting at the bar and talking to the pastry chef and watching her create beautiful dishes! This was one of my favorite meals of my trip!!
Superb on every level. Never fails at any little thing. And their attention to special dietary requests is very accomadating.
Service was outstanding , and food was fantastic. Menu was limited but you couldn’t go wrong with anything you picked from it. Beverages were top notch!
We ate here as our last meal of a one week trip celebrating our 20th anniversary, and it was the best meal of our whole trip (and there were many good meals). Food was inventive - we both ordered the blind tasting menu so it was also surprising: 9 modest sized courses with each one a surprise. Delicious.
Service / staff was excellent and even gave us advice about exploring elsewhere in Portland.
We are frequent Portland diners and wanted a special place for our 3 year anniversary. The food was interesting and delicious, but I wish the server was more friendly and engaging to explain the food more. He was very pretentious and was the only part of the meal that was disappointing. It will be a while before we return because of this. Portland service needs to improve, many places get comfortable and figure people will always leave 20%. Customer service goes a long way.
A delightful experience. Food was outstanding & beyond beautiful. Each selection was a work of art. Seth, our server, was extremely knowledgeable & led us flawlessly through the menu. Looking forward to a return visit.
Patrick, our server, is always amazing. We've been coming every other year or so from Florida and this place never lets me down.
Magnificent food. Really, restaurants do not get any better than Hugo's.
There are many reasons why it is ranked among the top 20 restaurants in America. The recommendations by the knowledgable and friendly waiter, Patrick, regarding speciality drinks and menu choices were spot-on. Owner Andrew Taylor came out and talked with us for a while; he has three restaurants on the same block and they are a major reason why Portland was recently named by Bon Appetit as the best dining city in the U.S. If we lived there, we would be going to these three restaurants constantly.
Excellent all around
Very creative and delicious food, expertly prepared and served
Had the most incredible dinner in some time and that is coming from somebody that lives in another foodie town. MUST MUST MUST do the Chef's Tasting menu. PERFECT amount of food even though it is a 10 course meal! Highly recommend sitting at the counter where you can watch all of the action happen.
Maybe Hugos is a fine place to go if you plan on ordering their $90.00 Chefs Tasting Menu or if you happen to personally know one or more of the staff. Otherwise it seems like you aren't a valued customer and besides, some of the food ( chicken dish) was unremarkable at best.
Hugo's is a great restaurant. I love the food, the adventuresome menu and the friendly wait-staff. I don't like bar seating for dinner, so if I can't get a table, I look elsewhere. However, the food and service are extraordinary and it's always a pleasure to dine there. My wife and I were saying how lucky we are to live in a city with such great restaurants. Hugo's is arguably the best.
extremely attentive staff, creative cocktails, good wine list, food preperation is top shelf, wonderful blend of flavors great eye appeal, comfortable atmosphere
It was an overall excellent experience, however I have been to Hugos in years past and remember the food being a little bit better. Of course I went in with extremely high expectations, and some of the courses from the blind chef‘s tasting my girlfriend and I has were a little over seasoned and salty in our opinion.
