Rushed service, courses came on top of each other. Calamari was what you would expect in a fast food restaurant-can bet it was purchased pre-breaded frozen, was small, tough rings-we sent it back. Beautiful sea bass was delivered on a bed of half-cooked peas....very poor choice for such a beautiful and expensive piece of fish. To compensate, head waiter sent a complimentary dessert to the table-not something we would of chosen -we did not eat. Would have thought you could have your own choice of dessert to enjoy. We have visited this establishment numerous times over the last 20+ years and feel it has really gone downhill in respect to service and quality of Chef. We will not visit again. Too many good restaurants in Chicago
Great service and food!!!
Arrived early and even though then house was packed we were seated in a timely manor. The food and experience were above and beyond as always with the Gibson’s family. There might be a lot of new competition these days but Gibson’s restaurants remain the Gold Standard for fine dining in Chicago as a classic.
Saturday night can be a mad house, but the staff always rises to the occasion. Our guests were 90 minutes late due to confusion on the time and an accident on Lake Shore Drive, so two of us had a long wait. We were given a table in the bar area for sometime and even complimentary appetizers. The food is always good, and the service attentive.
The restaurant was very crowded when we arrived for our 8:30 reservation. We were told they were running about 20 minutes behind but at 9:30 we still were not seated. We were able to sit at tables at the bar and order drinks. The waitstaff could not have been more apologetic and they comped us several appetizers for our wait. Food was excellent and the atmosphere was very festive. I would definitely go back!
We always try to dine at Hugo's at least once during our annual November trip to Chicago. This year was as good as always! The bone-in ribeye was excellent. I am glad we split the twice baked potato because it was almost as large as a football. Our waiter Simon was fantastic! We will be back next year!
Not impressive at all. The food was so so and services were primitive.
A great restaurant! We especially enjoyed the calamari appetizer and the bookbinder soup!
Amazing food!! We love this establishment, the food is always amazing.
food and service outstanding. 8pm reservations for 2 turned into 8:45 seating. Staff was apologetic and did give us a free appetizer. overall very good experience. the crab cakes awesome and the steak
(Australian ribeye) fantastic. Yes we will be back
Always wonderful service and fantastic food! A Chicago must!
I'm a fan of Gibsons and Hugo's, but this time was a disaster. At the moment the hostess brought us to our table, the bus boy ran in front of us and blocked our way to sit down. He was in such a hurry to clear up the other two settings that he gave no regard for the fact that we were standing there waiting. The waitress who was so consumed with her speech about the food was oblivious to the fact that I asked two questions while she was talking. Needless to say, she ignored the questions and went on to ask what we would like. We ordered at that point. I ordered a saled along with an entree along with my wife. The bus boy brought the saled and within 2 minutes of receiving the saled, another server brought the 2 entrees. The waitress then stopped over and asked if everything was alright knowing full well I was still eating my saled. I told her to take the entrees away until I finished my saled. She did so with a huff and a puff as if it was my fault. During the entire meal, the bus boy stook over our booth and no sooner than I put the fork down, he would stick his arm across the table to clear plates. The bus boy was so close during the entire meal it felt like he was sitting next to me in the booth. i don't usually wright bad reviews like this, but a little attention and training might stop this experience from happening to other customers
Food was good for my guests however, the sea bass was tiny and the accompanying peas and mushrooms were a laughable portion.Waiter seemed to think that was correct portion. Don’t throw your money away.
Great menu choices and excellent service!
Excellent super fresh seafood. Well prepared. Great service and good prices.
Absolutely best restaurant in Chicago hands down!!! Food was perfect !! And the service was amazing !!! It was so good we are Going back again tonight !!!
Best crab cake in the city! We go to Hugo's happy hour quite frequently.
Our Server Omar was the best. Food and drinks were great but it was all about the service. They don't like to give out their names but I insisted and Omar reluctantly obliged.
We waited 45 minutes even though we had a reservation. The food was great though and they did comp out appetizers. Don’t go here if you need to get to a show or other appointment
One of the top seafood restaurants in Chicago. The food is fresh, the atmosphere is conducive to conversation, and the staff is helpful and attentive.
Excellent everything but noise level deafening.
Bob our waiter was amazing; great experience!
Great menu choice but a little underwhelmed by the food particularity the under seared fillet steak on the bone which was also cold.
Everything was good but the walleye is amazing.
Hugo’s is one of our favorite restaurants. The location in the Rush Street area is great for watching people and enjoying Chicago nightlife. The food is very good and the wait staff are very attentive to the needs of their customers.
It was our second trip to the restaurant. Overall the service was excellent and we enjoyed the ambience. However, my food was just barely warm. I had the blackened swordfish, which was delicious, but it was only warm and several of the sides were also only warm. Given the price one would expect that the food really should come out warmer than it was. Excellent seafood and salads.
We attended Hugo's on a Friday evening at 5:30p with a party of 7 and found the service to be slow and our server was not as attentive as we would have thought given the prices of the entres. The seared tuna was very good as were the steak sliders. However we found the overall experience and value did not match the overall price of the dinner. I will make reservations at another restaurant in the Rush Street area next time.
Service was very good. Everyone seemed to enjoy their meals. We had 5:00 reservations so I was quite surprised that when it came to ordering Creme Brûlée for dessert they were already out of it - at 7:00 on a Saturday???
Long wait even with reservation but was worth it. Will go back. Excellent service and food. Lots to choose from.
I’ve been going to Hugo’s with my family for birthdays for a long time and it’s always been such a great experience, which is why I decided to take my boyfriend for his birthday. It was such a disappointment. He’d never been before. Like always the food was great. But we were seated at this terribly small table that barely fit our meal, we kept getting bumped into by other patrons. Our waiter completely ignored us. The manager replaced our drinks and checked on us more than him! He was substantially more attentive to other tables so it felt like he simply was not interested in serving us. I was really disappointed and his poor service really put a damper on my boyfriends dinner.
Our meal at Hugo's was mixed. My wife had tuna which was fabulous. I ordered a steak that arrived at the table cooked properly, but at room temperature. The staff was quick to respond not only serving another steak, but delivered a shrimp cocktail to provide something while the new steak was being prepared. Second steak was served hot, but the meat was not the same quality as the first. Overall, it was a good experience and we would certainly dine at Hugo's again. The restaurant was packed at the time and it seemed like our waiter (while excellent) was overburdened with tables. That may explain the room temperature steak.
I would recommend Hugo's to anyone looking for a great meal and great service. The food is delicious and the service is even better!
I was entertaining a business group of 8 and had Ron as our server. Ron was exceptional with his knowledge of the menu and recommendations to fit the diverse tastes of the table. Extremely professional, personable and helpful, Ron was as good as the food! I will certainly ask for Ron next time. It was a little tight for 8 at the round table but it worked.
Our waiter - Montrose is the best!!!
Food was outstanding. It was Saturday night and the place was jamming so the noise level was pretty high.
Great Night! Hugo made us feel at home. We made reservations and were seated promptly. We are recommending it and will be regulars.
Terrific seafood and excellent helpful service in a very busy and noisy place. Wouldn't miss it when in Chicago.
I really miss the guy playing the piano in the bar. Also I remember the waitresses in the bar being more friendly then that. We sat at a table in the bar because it was dead in the other part. Maybe she was just having a bad night. But I really use to go here to sit in the bar eat great food and listen to the live piano cover songs. I miss that
Food was so so. Service was great. Sitting at the bar tables is super tight
A true seafood house with raw bar AND Gibson’s Prime steaks, too! Perfect combination. Superb FRESH fish preparation, oysters straight from the ocean and a steak ordered “char, rare” and served that way. What’s not to like? Best meal in Chicago and the bar to match!!
