Consistently excellent food and service
Excellent customer service
Sat in the little bar area behind hostess. Never did that before but hostess talked us into it. Service was fair. Waitress had little personality. Nothing like the guys in the main restaurant who know how to do it!!!We will never sit in there again.
crab legs, crab cakes, Ahi tuna, salmon, whitefish, walleye, oysters, escargots. FUN service staff. Bookbinders fish stew, clam chowder. Co-ownership and shared kitchen with Gibson's Steakhouse.
Full bar, AMAZING waaaaaaaay too big desserts. You don't need to go anywhere else.
Coming from a fellow Gibsons, I take a ton of pride in my steps of service and expect that when I go out now unfortunately, but every place is different. We had a reso but the dining room looked way too busy to know if we would be seated any time soon. We decided we would just sit in the open bar table since we were starving! When we sat down the table in front of us were packed 5 people into the smaller bar table so the whole night, the drunk guy with his back to us kept hitting our table and spilling our drinks, lol. Our waitress greeted us and she seemed very unamused which was fine, im a server, and i get it. After they had poured us waters my boyfriend asked for one without ice, since he drinks so much she would be filling it up every five seconds, When he asked she rolled her eyes at him, which was weird. We had ordered the chicago cut to split and then fries and the potato. My boyfriend and i both ordered drinks, but unfortunately mine wasn't as great as i thought it was going to be, which is no ones fault, im not a drinker really. I took one sip of it and left it there the whole time since i felt rude saying something. Once our dinner came, everything was really cold. I was super bummed since i was so excited to finally get a gibsons steak outside of work. Once we finished, we asked for the bill and i saw the cosmo was still on there, i didnt see paying for it since it was still completely full, but she never asked or said anything about it. When i had asked her if she would mind taking it off she responded with "had you asked in the first place, i would have, but yes i can". i was extremely taken back since i dont see how you could respond to anyone that way. I wasnt expecting special treatment and everyone has an off night, but she definitely made our experience more unenjoyable than steak did. Being a gibsons employee we still tipped on the whole bill, and even the drink, which was slightfully painful. Hopefully, next time the experience is better. :(
Sid our waiter was great! Attentive, knowledgeable and kind!
Waiter was great but overworked. Noise level unbelievably loud. Don’t think we’ll go again
Great menu, very good service!
Great food. Best shrimp and Chilean sea bass.
Sat by the window-great food! Tried the frog legs and they were pretty good! Pike, salmon, steaks all done to perfection!
I hadn’t been in years and it didn’t disappoint. Everything was done extremely well. It started with smiles at the host stand, then the waiters attentiveness, humor, and professionalism and finally to the delicious food. I’ll be back!
First time here. Frog Legs and Walleye Pike were great. Enjoyed our meal and service
Amazing food, amazing service!!!
We have enjoyed Hugo’s for years. Disappointed does not describe our feelings about our latest visit. The ribs were terribly over cooked. Steak was ordered medium rare. It arrived well done. The sea bass was just ok. Not worth the price. The chocolate sundae dessert was very good. Hughes needs to step it up to former food quality.
Great service from Brian. Food was great. The Bookbinder soup is the best !
We asked our daughter, who was celebrating her 18th birthday, where she wanted to eat. She picked Hugo frogs! We had a reservation, but it took a long time to get seated and the management was amazing and brought us free appetizers.
I never imagined Hugo’s could have an “off” night. I’ve been there at least 50 times as it used to be my favorite restaurant. My husband ordered the Walleyed Pike and it was mushy. I ordered the crab cake entree, both crab cakes were overcooked. Our key lime desert had way too much meringue. His vodka martini appeared to not have vermouth. We decided to enjoy our out of town guests in lieu of changing the vibe by complaining about food quality since our entire group was visiting from out of town. We did not have the typical Hugo’s experience.
Went with kids
Chris was our waiter!
Food was excellent
Service was excellent
My servers were Harold and Shopie. They were both excellent. They made my anniversary dinner great.
Excellent experience. Server was exceptional.
It was 6 month anniversary, we thought is was appropriate to celebrate at Hugo’s!
The good was cold - desert melting. Service was TERRIBLE!!! We are long time customers who won’t be back.
Hugo's Frog Bar & Fish House is THE place in Chicago for seafood! Fresh fish and shellfish dominate the menu. My husband and I started with oysters on the half shell and clam chowder--both were outstanding! We chose the pan fried walleye pike for our main course, and it was absolutely delicious! Unfortunately, we did not save room for dessert. Hugo's is a great restaurant. We will definitely return!
The food was not worth the cost. The chicken was dry and super small portion and the three lamb chops were totally burnt on one side and not worth the cost at all. Allow pie served cold with ice cream?? So many great fish and steak places ...Hugo’s seems to have lost its luster.
Always one of our favorite restaurants!
One of the best dining experiences we’ve ever had. Recommended by a friend. Our server was Art and he was incredibly friendly and knowledgeable. He had support from about three other people (servers, water, clean up). All were very friendly.
My wife and I started with bookbinder soup and house salad. Both were outstanding. We split the W.R. Chicago Cut Rib Eye. Just what you expect from a fine restaurant. Very very tender and tasty. We had a side of brussel sprouts - as good as they get.
We wanted to split a desert and ordered their Muddy Bottom Pie. It was out of this world, but big enough for six people easily so we left a lot of it there.
Overall a perfect dinner experience. And with a bottle of wine the bill (only) came to $145 before tip. Can’t wait to go back.
Celebrating an anniversary with family and was pleasantly surprised to start off with a complimentary glass of Prosecco! The overall service, as usual, was second to none. The steaks were top notch but the whitefish was bland, slightly overcooked and would not be something we would recommend. But on the whole, the experience was great and a night at Hugo’s / Gibson’s never disappoints.
Consistently delicious. Could not imagine better service, thanks to Montrose, Art, Harry. Priscilla to greet you. Adam, manager.
It’s a treat to watch the staff serve with precision & excellence.
busy as usual...this was our 5th time to hugos...everything was going well except for the waiter who has been there for a long time had an attitude...he wanted to take our order as soon as we sat down.. when we politely said no we wanted to relax for a bit... we were then ignored for 20 minutes...not a professional job at all...there was no reason for this guy to cop an attitude other than he was busy making a ton of money in tips...not so much from our table though...hopefully a one off experience...after working hard all week you expect to get great service and no attitude at such a fine restaurant...just proves how one guy can blow the whole night for everyone...
How have we not known about this restaurant before this past visit to Chicago? We always try to find a restaurant within walking distance from our north end of Michigan Ave hotel when we visit Chicago for a weekend getaway. Hugo's is only two blocks from The Drake and I'm not sure how we'd never noticed it before. I will say with complete honesty, this is the best restaurant we have ever had the pleasure of dining in, in Chicago. Service was attentive, and top notch. Our waiter thought of our every desire before we could think of it ourselves. Although the restaurant was very busy, he made us feel like we were his only customers. Portions are very large. To be honest, we over ordered for the two of us. We started with the calamari, which could have easily served a party of 4 or more. We moved on to the main course, where I had bay scallops that are only available a few weeks of the year. I have a specific intolerance that requires me to slightly picky when selecting a dish - to make sure it isn't an ingredient in my food. It was between the scallops and a walleye dish, as to whether the chef could leave out the certain ingredient. Our waiter was so helpful, explaining he'd have to discuss with chef as to whether it could be left out and would that leave me with a bland tasting dish. So I told him to surprise me. Pick which ever one chef thought would work best. He seemed so exited to surprise me! My husband had the seared tuna, but was also interested in the frog legs, a Hugo's specialty. Our waiter suggested he make a small side order of the frog legs, so that he could have the best of both worlds. Perfect choice. He loved both! We picked the twice baked potato and the grilled asparagus for sides- both shareable. To be honest, neither of us have ever seen a baked potato this big. It was like radioactive steroid sized! We couldn't even begin to finish it. It could have fed 4 as a side. The asparagus was perfectly done. For dessert, we shared their pecan pie -huge!
It was a great experience, aside from the table behind us having a toddler yelling behind us..
food was amazing! Service was amazing! Our waiter was above and beyond!
Our waiter Ron made our dining experience very enjoyable.
The food was wonderful. The crab cakes were two generous portions and delicious. The walleye was very tasty and the blackened swordfish was excellent . I ordered the cheeseburger and fries made with Gibson beef. It was , as always cooked to perfection! The firecracker shrimp was our starter and packs a punch as one would expect. Clam chowder also a delicious addition. After everything we were too full for dessert but I would strongly suggest to save room for them. They looked amazing!
Wonderful food and spectacular service as always.
Rushed service, courses came on top of each other. Calamari was what you would expect in a fast food restaurant-can bet it was purchased pre-breaded frozen, was small, tough rings-we sent it back. Beautiful sea bass was delivered on a bed of half-cooked peas....very poor choice for such a beautiful and expensive piece of fish. To compensate, head waiter sent a complimentary dessert to the table-not something we would of chosen -we did not eat. Would have thought you could have your own choice of dessert to enjoy. We have visited this establishment numerous times over the last 20+ years and feel it has really gone downhill in respect to service and quality of Chef. We will not visit again. Too many good restaurants in Chicago
Great service and food!!!
Arrived early and even though then house was packed we were seated in a timely manor. The food and experience were above and beyond as always with the Gibson’s family. There might be a lot of new competition these days but Gibson’s restaurants remain the Gold Standard for fine dining in Chicago as a classic.
Saturday night can be a mad house, but the staff always rises to the occasion. Our guests were 90 minutes late due to confusion on the time and an accident on Lake Shore Drive, so two of us had a long wait. We were given a table in the bar area for sometime and even complimentary appetizers. The food is always good, and the service attentive.
The restaurant was very crowded when we arrived for our 8:30 reservation. We were told they were running about 20 minutes behind but at 9:30 we still were not seated. We were able to sit at tables at the bar and order drinks. The waitstaff could not have been more apologetic and they comped us several appetizers for our wait. Food was excellent and the atmosphere was very festive. I would definitely go back!
We always try to dine at Hugo's at least once during our annual November trip to Chicago. This year was as good as always! The bone-in ribeye was excellent. I am glad we split the twice baked potato because it was almost as large as a football. Our waiter Simon was fantastic! We will be back next year!
