Remodeled new owners Bonfire quail and rattlesnake coming back on the menu
We haven't been here in years. Just decided to try it out again as it is now under new ownership. It certainly did not disappoint - the service was awesome! The food was as delicious as I remembered from the old Jeff Blank days. We went early so we were able to get the perfect spot in the restaurant, a cozy booth. The remodel looks great the bar is nice and cozy as well. Overall a really nice experience. We highly recommend you give it a try!
The music was not appropriate for sitting at dinner. He needed an audience that wanted to interact. Got too loud even in the back. The waiter was wonderful and the food was too, but our main courses took a very very long time to come out. And not much of a a crowd that night to use as an excuse. The decor is charming. I will definitely be returning despite the issues.
We have been to this restaurant 5 years ago and it was great, came back this past week and it took 10 min for anyone to even approach the hostess stand for us to be seated with our reservation and over 20 minutes for someone to even come greet us or ask us if we wanted drinks at the table. A dinner that should have only taken 1 hour took well over 2 hours due to lack of service at a relatively empty and not busy restaurant. For the price of the menu, I would go elsewhere to enjoy good service.
Food was amazing. The restaurant was terribly understaffed. We just left from our New Years Eve dinner. One more wait person and a dedicated busser/water person would definitely help. They did comp a glass of wine which helped but what I'd really like to see is adequate staffing and we would gladly pay full price.
It’s not the old Hudson’s on the Bend. Menu rather limited. Hot & crunchy trout still available, but mine but my husband I both felt it was rather dry. Prices would be appropriate for a fine dining establishments, but the new atmosphere doesn’t seem to offer that vibe.
Food was great. But, despite not being busy (maybe 8 tables seated and plenty of staff working), it took forever to place our order and get it.... and my pet peeve (as someone who waited tables for a year), no efforts to refill water glasses. (There was a water station in the corner and I got up three times to refill our glasses).
Was very quiet the night we went, but food and service were top class. Would have got 5 stars if it had been buzzing with a few more people
I think the restaurant is excellent, but a bit pricey for what you get. Our party of three had two appetizers and four drinks and the bill was nearly $300🙀....so it really is only a special occasion restaurant
Our second trip since Barrett took over and not our last. We had the halibut and the duck with scallops both were prepared perfectly. It appears Hudson’s is on the path back to when Jeff owned it.
Great Thanksgiving food with elk! Yum!
_Hudsons is back!!! The new owner is awesome and knows what he's doing. They are using the original recipes plus some new ones. The Crunchy Trout is just like it's supposed to be! Staff was very friendly and wonderful. Definitely going back soon!
We hadn't been to Hudson's in some time decided to give it a try again. To our surprise and a good one it was the first night the new owner was managing the restaurant. He unlike the previous couple of owners has years of restaurant experience. We had excellent food and great service the menu was limited but considering it was the first night we were very happy. The new owner expects to get the place back to where it was when Jeff owned it. We plan on putting the Hudson's back in our restaurant rotation.
Our evening could not have been better. We were treated royally and the food was superb.
Historic Hudson's has been a special occasion destination for my family since I was of restaurant age. My husband and I decided to dine there on a Friday night while in Austin for a football game. My Mom teased me, asking if I was going to have the 'rattlesnake fritters.' We reserved for 7 PM, then were concerned we would be late, so we tried to change to 730, but OpenTable showed no availability. Luckily, we made it for 7, but were surprised to find the restaurant nearly empty. The beautiful Hill Country setting was lovely. There were a few folks in the bar and a singer was entertaining them. But there were no other diners in the room where we were seated, and we could see only one or two tables seated in the adjacent dining room. Our server, Jenna, was very friendly and forthcoming about being new. We selected a bottle of wine, but was told it was not in stock, so we decided to order by the glass. Turns out that there were two versions of the wine list in use. (One wonders if they are simply not re-ordering their wines because of low demand.) There was some confusion about my glass of wine, so the server comped it. That was unnecessary but nice of her. Our smoked date jalapeno poppers were delicious. (The rattlesnake is no longer on the menu.) My halibut was beautifully presented with black-eyed peas on top and creamed corn under. My husbands 8 oz. 'steak' (no specific cut was mentioned on the menu) was satisfactory. We enjoyed our meal and the service was lovely, but when we left, there were fewer diners than when we entered and the hostess had her jacket on. Upon googling, we learned that there have been a couple of changes in ownership/management. We wondered if the efforts of the current team to preserve Hudson's charm will be enough to keep a good thing going. So if you are a Hudson's fan, get out there and eat. If not, come discover a treasure before it disappears.
After booking our table I received a phone call that they were a little short staffed for the evening. I really appreciated the phone call And the heads up. The staff were all very attentive and very wonderful. We never would’ve noticed that they were shorthanded. The food and wine is always top notch. Looking forward to going back!
The service was amazing. A very knowledgeable server is always a bonus! Drinks were great! I didn’t care for the pre fixe menu change, but not enough to take a star. The food was great! 50$ for canapé, bread, app, dinner and dessert, it’s was worth it!
Lovely meal celebrating my birthday with my hubby and another couple. New chef is very creative but still accessible. Very quiet for a Saturday night but they were competing with Longhorns football. This restaurant deserves more props than it gets...we’ve been patrons since the days of Chef Jeff Blank and would love to see this “legacy” restaurant stay around for another de daw or two.
Little imagination with the food, we did the wine pairing and each got the same wine with different entrees. We liked our server but food service was slow. We liked Hudsons and wanted to try the new place but not great and fairly expensive.
Every item of food that my two brothers and I had were incredible ( Hot and Crunchy Trout, Chicken Fried Venison and Coulotte Steak. However, the piece de resistance was the Hot and Crunchy Avocado appetizer! I know they are thinking of going to a price fix menu but the avocado needs to stay!!! 😁
Not as good as it used to be
Experience: It was our first time at Hudson’s and I must say that they have the ambience and music (type and volume) perfectly set up for a wonderfully pleasant experience. We will return for the food, service and overall ambience.!
Drinks: The bourbon cocktail was artfully concocted and every bit of it was enjoyed. The Syrah wine was a good one for the entree we chose.
Food: The bread and butter was to die for... amazingly soft and delectable. Our duck diablos appetizers arrived on half a green apple (which I promptly finished as I didn’t realize duck was wrapped in bacon - I don’t eat pork). Nevertheless, tasty appetizer.
I ordered the trout and my husband ordered the wild boar. While both entrees were exceptional in taste and presentation, the boar I must say was a measly two racks (for the price charged) and hence lost the 1 star in value. The trout as a whole was a hearty and fulfilling entree with mouthwatering grits, aioli and Brussels sprouts.
Service: The seating hostess and our server were good. Our server did seem to miss the note on a particular request, but also offered to correct it (which is the critical part of any service - how does one respond/react to customer’s feedback or request).
Overall: we had a good date night. Quick, well serviced and prepared food. we will be back!
It's expensive but the ambiance and service were great
Let me start by saying that I've lived in Austin since 1984. And while I know this isn't the same Hudson's on the Bend as when Jeff Blanks ran it, I was heartened when I looked up their menu and saw some familiar items.
Let me also note that on the particular night we went they had had two large groups (according to our waitress) that really taxed them earlier in the night.
And while I'm here...our waitress had only been working there for a week. She was very pleasant...and happened to be from Nu'Awlin's where I grew up. So we had a kinship...and I was hoping at every turn that our evening would turn around...but it started out bad...and just seemed to get worse as the evening progressed.
I have been to the old Hudson's probably a dozen or so times throughout the years, and when asked what my favorite restaurant is I almost always answer "Hudson's". I've even gone out of my way to recommend it to others. Many others.
Now...on to my synopsis of the evening:
Our reservations were for 8:30 and we arrived about 8:35. My date immediately noticed the beautiful outdoor seating area and wondered if we could sit out there. The heat of the day had subsided and with all their lights and crisp white table cloths that area was calling our name.
So we asked the waitress if we could sit out there she said "I don't think we have anyone servicing that area. Sorry." Bummer...but ok...inside is nice. In fact, it's very nice and one of the reasons I always lean toward Hudson's when I have a date, or a special occasion.
But now we were asked if we were ready to order our drinks. I ordered a Laurel which was very good...but over priced in my opinion. My date couldn't find anything from the menu that she wanted so she asked if they could make her a Moscow Mule. Pretty popular drink these days...but our waitress said she wasn't sure, and would go and check. When she came back she said that they could make one...but that the beer and some other ingredients (which I c
Hot & crunchy trout was just as good as Jeff Blanks. Good food, good service. Well pleased with the evening.
The food is exotic like alligator and wild boar. and it is also rather spicy. The venison I had was dry, and thoroughly cooked through instead of rare. The server had no idea of what most of the things on the menu were, and had to ask the chef multiple times. Maybe first night on? It has become more elegant over time and the noise level is far quieter, but the place was practically deserted (UT had a game that night), is maybe it us noisier when full.
We've just moved back to Lakeway after being gone about a decade and decided to have dinner at what we knew as Hudson's on the Bend. Happy to discover that a the new owners have not only kept it intact but improved it. The entrance is now moved to the rear as is a new and what appears to be a fantastic bar complete with live music. Staff were extremely friendly. Service was top notch. Dinner prepared by a new chef Andre Garza imported from the Martha's Vineyard area we were told. Overall a great experience and we'll be back!!
Dinner was very very good, we thought the cocktails were a little over priced though
My daughter took her boyfriend to celebrate their anniversary. They were treated wonderfully all evening by the whole staff. She walked out feeling like she was on Cloud 9. Fantastic experience!
Overpriced. Not worth it. Will not return.
Shrimp was too sweet.
Duck was ok but bokchoy was burnt.
OMG! What a gem! This is a wonderful place. The setting is beautiful and inside is just as nice. The food was fabulous and the service could not have been better! We were celebrating my husband's birthday with family. The pace was just right. We never felt rushed or ignored. We had wonderful drinks, appys and dinner. I wanted to try dessert but was too full. We could hear music but it was just loud enough so that we could talk without shouting. We would definitely come back. I just can't say enough good things.
Our complaint about this restaurant continues to be that they are often out of the wines that we try to order from their wine list.
My husband paid $52 for venison and crab plate and they didn’t have crab so he was given 2 pieces of shrimp instead and charged full price which I do not think was a fair trade. The food was great and drinks were great and I loved the building.
We didn't plan on coming here, this was our first time. The place was newly remodeled, the bar area was very nice and well done. The staff was attentive, but not annoying. our waitress was very familiar with the menu and did give great detail about each item and was very helpful. I ordered the Filet, it was cooked exactly to a medium rare. The sides were great. You can see by my other reviews, that we dine in the finest restaurants across the country. I was pleasantly surprised at the quality of the beef here. It was as good as you can get. Everything was spot on. The owner was very cordial and we enjoyed meeting him. I would highly recommend this place.
Love this restaurant’s vibe, food and cocktail menu. The service was amazing and the food was really Delicious. Loved the hot’n’crunchy avocado as an appetizer and the expresso rubbed tenderloin was actually yummy and the hot’n’crunchy trout was the best. If you have not been you will not be disappointed. Would love to go back when it’s cooler to take advantage of the outdoor patio.
Another terrific experience. Wonderful food, knowledgable waitstaff, no rush felt to order. Enjoyable, relaxing evening
All around amazing meal! Great for a special occasion or if you want so true hill country cuisine! Food was unique and delicious, beautiful decorations and ambiance, and the staff were knowledgeable and attentive.
After 3 owners in the last 5 years with no improvement
It’s time to hang’em up. We had heard that management
Hired a true professional to run this establishment and had made the necessary changes to aid him. We gave it 6 weeks until we would try it out. What a surprise when we went Saturday eve for dinner to find out he resigned.
We sat down and ordered our dinner which took almost and hour to arrive. I returned my selection as it was under cooked and we discovered at the end of dinner they had only 1 person in the kitchen working ....the chef.
There were 2 waiters and 1 barkeep in the entire place.
It was sad to see an establishment that had been so alive and vibrant come to this. Better for ownership to sell the place if possible and some person start a new business.
Retire the name for the sake of nostalgia alone.
The food and service were excellent, and the music was absolutely perfect. Could not have asked for a more enjoyable experience. Highly recommended.
I loved the atmosphere at Hudson’s, it was very unique. The food was delicious as well as beautiful and the service was very professional.
