The restaurant is cute and fun but the food was just fair. It was very slow to arrive at the table but LUKEWARM when we got it. The service was friendly but not polished or fast enough. (And the place wasn't even crowded so I don't know what was wrong).
in general, very disappointing and we probably won't be back.
Didn’t not try any food. Went for drinks. They have a limited food menu and does not have bottomless mimosas on Saturday. Roof top opens @3.
Service was awful. Waiter was rude and clearly did not want to be there. He had an open argument with another server when she politely asked for him to help and then started to do everything slow and minimally. If I owned this place I'd review my "Server training". We waited 23 minutes for drink refills.
Food was good for what it was, but we noticed a lot of plates (getting dried out under a heat lamp) waiting to be delivered to other guests.
Nice place. Good service. Food was disappointing. Drinks not impressive either. Unfortunate, because the location has so much promise. We sampled much of the menu, and no one at the table loved anything.
Excellent meal, menu, service and atmosphere. Highly recommend!
The food was great and the staff were even better! A great experience overall!
Delicious food. Our waitress was amazing - helpful when we picked our drinks and food.
Flies all in the restaurant from open windows
Food was below average
Wasn't their best night. We got there early, so you can't blame a crowd for our experience. Food was just ok. It had been great the other times we went, but something changed. Also, server forgot to put in our sides, and then said it would be another 20 minutes to get sides after our entrees were served because then kitchen had gotten backed up. Nothing was offered to compensate for the mistake. Still have alot of kinks to work out.
Our server, Stephanie, was very good—friendly, knew about the food and wine, and she checked on us appropriately. We got there a little after 6:00 pm on Thursday—had a reservation, but it didn’t get crowded til we were leaving. I enjoyed the fried cauliflower/kale and Korean style drummies. I wished the chicken had crisper skin, but sauce had sweet and the right heat. My hubs had the burger and chips. Chips were a little too brown and burger was ‘meh’. Wine list limited. Enjoyed it.
The grits were super yummy. We definitely enjoyed having bottomless mimosas. ☺️
What a wonderful brunch. Everything we had was fantastic.
I had a friend visiting from out of town, and I wanted her to see the wonderful interior of this restaurant. The food is also delicious, and everyone in our party was pleased. We sampled the burger, the catfish, the spinalis, and wings along with a few sides.
Fun restaurant. Went for lunch, great bloody Mary's , friendly staff, order their fried Chicken!
Hu failed to notify me that there were maintenance issues that prevented the Diner from being open. My guests showed up to see the restaurant closed and when I called to confirm there was no remorse for the inconvenience. The unprofessionalism of simply checking to see if there were persons who had a reservation and giving a courtesy call to inform me made a terrible first impression from a new restaurant in the city.
Nice service and atmosphere, but with the exception of the parker house rolls, which are delicious, the rest of the food was mediocre. With so many other great places to eat in Memphis, I probably wouldn’t go back there for a full dinner. I’d go back just for drinks and rolls though!
Great music and ambiance. Small, very well done menu. Go!
The service was great! The food was exceptional!! The ambience was perfected by the music played by the d.j. Thank you for a beautiful Mother’s Day!!!
DELICIOUS!!!! The crawfish mac and cheese is to die for!
Service was slow, wine list and bar options are very limited
While visiting Memphis, I went for dinner to Hu Diner. My friend and I were so pleasantly surprised! We expected a very casual no frills meal- the food was delicious and exactly what we were looking for. The fried chicken was amazing- moist and tender, the outside was crisp and not greasy at all. We decided to share the large portion and the price was very fair for all of the food that we got. The real standout was the ambiance and service! While I waited for my friend, I sat in the outdoor bar seats (so cool!). I ordered the "Aretha" it was a light, citrusy/spicy whiskey drink. I chatted with the bartender Nia about good places to go to in the area. When we sat down, our server, Stephanie was the essence of Southern hospitality. She was friendly, gave us suggestions on the menu (thanks for the suggestion of Champagne with the chicken!), and brought our food quickly. We finished the meal with a very grown up creamsicle milkshake- vanilla ice cream and orange liqueur- DELICIOUS! We can't wait to come back again!
Great service, great food and most importantly in a good location
Very nice upscale diner. Excellent service and great menu choices. We had brunch - Eggs Benedict and a Hu burger.
Excellent food, good service, pleasant experience.
The menu is a little weird and not many options for a hotel restaurant. I like the ambiance and it would be a great place to get a drink and a bite to eat, but octopus and grits? The food I had was good, but would have liked more options.
Food was delicious. Very nice atmosphere with cool design and ambient lighting. I love the square bar set-up, with half the bar counter/stools set-up outside with windows to access the bar.
We’ve been wanting to try this since it opened and finally made it. Everyone was so welcoming and the food was amazing. We will definitely be back!
Great little spot that was walking distance from our hotel. Absolutely loved the catfish. Toughest part was picking a side, so we went with basically all of them!
Hu Diner on Main Street was a great spot! We were staying at the Hu Hotel, so it was convenient. Service was great and the food was awesome. This place is brand new and the ambiance and decor are really well done. Will return!
Girlfriend and I were in town for a wedding and stayed at the Hu. “Diner”I guess is their restaurant. We actually ate their twice. At lunch, she had a pimento sandwich that she liked very much and I had a catfish sandwich. As pretty much a city guy, was at first kinda reluctant but have to say, the catfish was delicious. Service was very good and our waiter was friendly and knowledgeable. We went again a second night with another couple and family and just ordered a bunch of things to share. Had Mexican style corn, fried chicken, Brussels sprouts and catfish that was prepared a different way. Pickled drinks were new for us and had fun trying a few of them. Loved the staff too, super friendly. As a Chicagoan, afraid I won’t make it back soon but I know our Memphis friends and family will return for sure.
We 3 really enjoyed dinner and like Hu a great deal. The food was good and the menu items were a good selection of choices. Our server, Stephanie, was wonderful and did a great job taking care of us; and our host was very personable and pleasant. We'll be back.
I love the atmosphere. It is dark and cozy with a modern decor. Very good fancy southern food.
Nice lil spot
I had such high hopes for Hu. Diner Have tried it twice and found the place looks great, the staff tries somewhat but could use some enthusiasm. Yet, I have found the food so disappointing - the menu is limited, the selection odd, and food is not well presented. The fried chicken is fine, the burger is fine (although mine was only lukewarm when served), the octopus is served with about a tablespoon of grits and it looks dreadful on the plate. The root vegetables came all chopped up in little pieces in a bowl - just looked so unappetizing.
I live downtown and we need Hu. Hotel and The Diner to be successful - someone please do something quick.
Three of us went to Hu Diner on Friday night. Good first impression.....ended there. The service was incredibly slow. First our drinks came (after 15 minutes and only one of three that we had to return as it was awful)....I had to go to the hostess and get her to find our drinks and when they came, the explanation was that the bartenders had to find out how to make a Negoni.
15 more minutes passed and finally we were able to give our orders. To a request to substitute a vegetable or another, the chef refused. We ordered chicken livers with the express note that they not be cooked too much as they get hard...they came...hard...
I had a great bibb lettuce salad...the end.
We won't be back. There is no valet parking and it's on a dark block and the only parking within a two block area is a parking garage that is not staffed and when I went to get my car, I did not see one person in that garage.
What a shame.
First time at the restaurant was for brunch yesterday. I asked for the pancakes and I was told that the chef had just 86’d them because they were short staffed.
So I ordered the sausage and biscuits... the biscuit was hard as a rock.. like shaking the table to cut it.. and the gravy was cold. The flavor was good Though. The bacon, fruit and grits were delicious. Our server must have been having a rough day and in his defense...he was one of two servers in the entire restaurant. Hi diner has a lot of potential, but they will have to step it up on service.
The service was slow, but to give them the benefit of the doubt it was also valentine’s weekend so it was pretty busy. We ordered the rib eye which was the smallest piece of rib eye I have ever had (the menu does not specify the size), on top of it it was cold. The rest of the items we ordered were good (crawfish Mac and cheese and specially the coliflower dish was delicious). The cocktails were not great, you are better off ordering wine. Nice place with good ambience but I am probably not coming back.
I only gave service 2 stars. Would have given negative if the executive chef and the floor manager had not spoken with us assuring us they are working towards making this place what it can be. The food was amazing!!! Drinks were great! It is rarely new so understandably kinks are being worked out. We will go back after a few months to see the progress in service. The waiter we had was very rude and took forever. We booked an open table for 6:30 but hostess forgot about us and never apologized. We finally sat down at our table at 7:45. The floor manager and executive chef was overly kind with apologies and comped some food items. Again, food was amazing!!!
My friend and I were excited to try new restaurant in downtown Memphis. Overall experience was just ok. Food was nothing special: I tried Hu burger with salad and my friend fried chicken sandwich with chips. Salad was over dressed and boring. Burger was over cooked. Seating arrangements were rather awkward. I do not think I will visit again. There are better spots in downtown for sure.
Went for Orpheum night and late Valentine’s Day. Awesome food, service and ambiance!!
