Howells & Hood Ratings and Reviews
So it’s a great location, they have a great beer menu but otherwise it was nothing special. They have a big check in area with unfriendly folks checking you in. Service was intermittent, food came out fairly quickly and wasn’t bad but certainly nothing special. They need to turn it up a notch somehow to make it more memorable.
Another outstanding evening at this wonderful restaurant at Tribune Tower. Our server Nikki was terrific and food knowledgeable. We loved the Kung Pao Cauliflower bites starter as much as the umami-rich Kohlrabi Dragon Noodles w/ shaved ribeye. And don't hesitate if you're a BBQ fan. The house-smoked slab of ribs was hugely rewarding. Everything was tasty, imaginative, and beautifully plated !
Manager Jay stopped by our table to see how we were enjoying our evening and we assured him everything was very right at Howells & Hood on the Mag Mile.
Howells and Hood was a great new find for us! We come to this area of Chicago about 4 times a year and had no idea that Howells and Hood existed! It is not a place that you will just happen past as it is located inside the Chicago Tribune building. Maybe for that reason, it was not busy at all after Hamilton, where other similar restaurants had a 1-2 hour wait. The staff was friendly and efficient, the food was good, and the atmosphere was just what we were looking for--quiet and casual. This will become a regular stop for us!
Great place for reasonably priced bar food and craft beer, our server Justin was extremely attentive despite being very busy with far bigger parties than us. Never left waiting for another drink and the choice of beers was excellent.
We enjoyed the atmosphere and the people watching.
Would definitely re-visit.
They were very accomodating. I was only able to book an 8:45pm reservation on open table but I needed it for 8pm. They called to verify the reservation the day before and was more than happy to move my reservation up to 8pm. The short rib dip on garlic bread was amazing and their adult beverages were nice and stiff 😁
Overall the restaurant was pretty good. The only downside is for some reason we were sat all the way in the back of the restaurant for a table of six. The back of the restaurant has an atmosphere like we were stuck in the closet. The better atmosphere is at the front where you come in. Not sure why we were put in the back....if there's a next time I'm certainly not going to go for it.
Overall food was really good. Staff was really good as well.
We made our reservation not knowing it was during the Mag Mile Parade and their location is right in the heart of activity, however, you would never have known. It was quiet inside yet the view was great. Our meal was cooked and seasoned to perfection. My wife had risotto with shrimp and I had skirt steak. I would definitely head back to this place for more. It is a little hidden gem. I go to Chicago all the time and never knew about this until a friend mentioned it a few weeks ago. Waiter was the best...no rush, yet attentive to our needs during the time. Totally recommend the tots appetizer for an awesome taste surprise.
As a single, mature female to be seated among (waitstaff had to ask people to move to even get to my table) millennials talking, drinking, pushing, and having a good time the atmosphere was awful for me. There were plenty of tables further from the bar I could have been seated at. I wouldn’t ever return, even though the food was good.
First time diners, chose it by proximity to our hotel, beer selection, on-line menu, and name (I'm a Howell - not exactly the same but close enough!) Beer, food, and service was excellent, and we were seated immediately. The noise level was a little high for me, but it seems to be part of the desired ambience. It didn't ruin the experience though.
Convenient location with good food. Busy place with several large parties. Bowl of Chili on a cool night hit the spot. Great beer flight with many local and regional beers to choose. Good experience, just avoid the coffee with dessert. Could’ve gotten better from a gas station.
Have been at this restaurant for both lunch and dinner. They have an impressive beer offering, which is definitely a plus. However, I was not particularly impressed by the food. Nothing bad, but also nothing that would draw me back again. Convenient location on Michigan Ave and a good spot to meet up for lunch.
Howells&Hood accommodated an increase in reservation last minute and I am very thankful for that. They have a great selection of beers and whiskeys/bourbons. The food was fantastic although portion size good be a bit over if you weren't planning on taking food home. Sharing is the key. The service was a touch slow in the beginning, but all orders were accurate and the waitress was very kind. It's in a wonderful location to start a day in the downtown area with family from out of town.
With its extensive beer selection, there is no question this is a great place for a casual meal. The food was very good with an adequate selection. The service was friendly and quick. It is not a quiet spot, and there are huge TV screens everywhere, but that should be expected for this kind of restaurant. We will definitely come back when we are in Chicago again.
