Howells & Hood Ratings and Reviews
Leave this restaurant to desperate tourists. It is a great location on Michigan Ave. very convenient to a lot of attractions and restaurants that take a bit more time and care. The ambiance is nice. I liked the quotes around the lobby but you can do way better a block off Michigan for less money
Food was very typical and didnt give me a reason to pick this restaurant over anywhere else. Our waitress was very disappointing, she didn’t provide silverware, ignored the table and rarely checked if we needed anything. It wasn’t busy so I was surprised.
I’ve been here before with friends for drinks and had a decent time. I suggest sticking to some beers and getting food elsewhere. They also serve wine in massive beakers which was a plus.
Our party thought we were getting the Hangover Brunch of 2017 due to the incorrect reading of Google information by one of the seniors, me. It turned into a wonderful morning normal brunch food, lunch food or multiple choices. The Bloody Marys were excellent. Our waitress had so much personality we all really enjoyed her attentiveness and sense of humor. What, no senior discount LOL
Very upset with my experience. First off I went for NYE after seeing their promotion for their “NYE PARTY”. They said they would have a DJ and videographer- both no where to be found. It was also dead. Not one person at the bar. I guess their promo didn’t go well but it would have been nice to have been called and told that the party was no longer a party. My boyfriend and I were visiting from NY and looking for a fun, upbeat restaurant to give us the NYE vibe while still having an intimate dinner.
The place has such potential and seems like it could be a fun place with the big bar and open space, however the service I had was weird. Barely saw the waitress and when we did she didn’t hide that she didn’t want to be there. She also sent over another waitress to ask us questions (that waitress was much better anyway). I have to say the drinks were great and creative, but overpriced for the experience. Finally we both ordered the risotto and it was WAYYY to salty and I even like a lot of salt. It’s as if they accidentally dropped too much salt when cooking.
I had high hopes for this place and was really disappointed as I was in town for only two days and that night being NYE which is a night to celebrate. Wish I never went.
I tried to make it for their late brunch but being a holiday weekend Saturday (Christmas Eve Eve), they ended it early due to lack of demand. I changed my mind to a mid-afternoon snack and ordered their stew, which was quite delicious, as well as a flight of limited edition stout from Deschutes Brewery (a taste of Oregon!) for before and after. I felt refreshed, rejuvenated and content for the rest of the afternoon through the late dinner that I had scheduled that evening. And a very convenient location, after my visit to the new Apple Store!
So it’s a great location, they have a great beer menu but otherwise it was nothing special. They have a big check in area with unfriendly folks checking you in. Service was intermittent, food came out fairly quickly and wasn’t bad but certainly nothing special. They need to turn it up a notch somehow to make it more memorable.
Another outstanding evening at this wonderful restaurant at Tribune Tower. Our server Nikki was terrific and food knowledgeable. We loved the Kung Pao Cauliflower bites starter as much as the umami-rich Kohlrabi Dragon Noodles w/ shaved ribeye. And don't hesitate if you're a BBQ fan. The house-smoked slab of ribs was hugely rewarding. Everything was tasty, imaginative, and beautifully plated !
Manager Jay stopped by our table to see how we were enjoying our evening and we assured him everything was very right at Howells & Hood on the Mag Mile.
Howells and Hood was a great new find for us! We come to this area of Chicago about 4 times a year and had no idea that Howells and Hood existed! It is not a place that you will just happen past as it is located inside the Chicago Tribune building. Maybe for that reason, it was not busy at all after Hamilton, where other similar restaurants had a 1-2 hour wait. The staff was friendly and efficient, the food was good, and the atmosphere was just what we were looking for--quiet and casual. This will become a regular stop for us!
Great place for reasonably priced bar food and craft beer, our server Justin was extremely attentive despite being very busy with far bigger parties than us. Never left waiting for another drink and the choice of beers was excellent.
We enjoyed the atmosphere and the people watching.
Would definitely re-visit.
They were very accomodating. I was only able to book an 8:45pm reservation on open table but I needed it for 8pm. They called to verify the reservation the day before and was more than happy to move my reservation up to 8pm. The short rib dip on garlic bread was amazing and their adult beverages were nice and stiff 😁
Overall the restaurant was pretty good. The only downside is for some reason we were sat all the way in the back of the restaurant for a table of six. The back of the restaurant has an atmosphere like we were stuck in the closet. The better atmosphere is at the front where you come in. Not sure why we were put in the back....if there's a next time I'm certainly not going to go for it.
Overall food was really good. Staff was really good as well.
