Nice Patio. Delicious Pho. Smaller portions (except for the pho) and higher prices than a lot of other Vietnamese restaurants, but the quality and the taste of the dishes make up for it.
Delicious food and cocktails! And super friendly servers. Can’t wait to go back!
As always, incredible food, service, and value from this hidden gem of modern vietnamese cuisine in Vancouver.
Incredible food and attentive service, will be back for sure!
The food was amazing. Really loved the spring rolls and fry bread to start. Duck Noir was very flavourful, and they have a decent selection of beers and wines. This location has seen numerous restaurants come and go but House Special is busy and seems to have found a recipe for success.
Delicious in every way and the combination of flavors was amazing.
We tried the duck, the chicken roulade, and the beef - all great in taste.
Great modern Vietnamese food! Good services and centrally located in Yaletown.
all the right flavours with a cool atmosphere and different types of good vietnamese food
The food and service was great! Loved the modern interpretations of vietnamese cuisine. My only criticism is that the ambience could be more intimate. The price makes this restaurant a place for a a fancy dinner or date, but the lighting and table arrangement is more like a lunch place. Still - I would definitely go back!
The services was not that good as last time, also the dine out courses tasted a little bit strange
My review is based on value: we were there as part of Dine Out and as House Special was in the $45 range, that comes with certain expectations of the dining experience. We were also attracted by the full vegetarian Dine Out menu.
The food was generally fine: there was some creativity in the appetizer and entree menu but it did not approach the excellence expected from that tier of Dining Out. The dessert was a strange collection of mini-desserts: a nice idea in theory, but our advice would be to consider the presentation - it ended up feeling pretty weird as separate little dishes were piled on the table and quickly introduced.
The restaurant space is uninspired and cafe-bright. Defintely a neighbouhood casual-dining option with takeout patrons coming and going.
We were told the DI menu was a teaser to an upcoming Veg restaurant to be launched on Kingsway. We may try it, but not if it's as overpriced as the DI menu.
Menu price for dineout seemed over priced. But would like to try more of the other menu items.
Excellent food and great services! Location is central as well.
There was a lot of smoke in the restrount.
Looked like there was no ventilation and you are eating in the kitchen .
I have been to House Special in Yaletown on average once in couple months and I have always brought visitors and friends here, and they all loved it.
It has been more than two months, so we 4 of us came in for dinner on the patio. The server looked very inexperienced but everyone has their starting point. We ordered three famous fry breads, one monk curry, a vegan pho, salad rolls, betel-wrapped beef brochettes, and some beers.
The fry bread has so little duck in it that I can combine all three orders and it’s still less than the regular portion! The vegan pho was over seasoned, the brochettes was okay but bland! The salad rolls was good and the Monk curry was very good. However the monk curry for our friend arrived at the table more than 20 - 25 mins after the first dish arrived at the table.
I am planning a meet up here two Saturday from now and I am not sure if I will or will I come back at all!
Disappointed to say the least!
Not your typical Vietnamese restaurant. Food was very tasty, and the atmosphere was warm. Our servers were caring and very helpful. I would definitely return and introduce others.
Different type of Vietnamese food, I love the food and location is great.
The services and the foods were great! We love the fact that it has vegan options for our vegan friends. Keep up the great job!
I can’t believe it took me so long to finally go to House Special - I feel like I’ve missed out on so many fantastic meals! Even the dishes I wouldn’t bother ordering again were very good - they just weren’t excellent and I’d rather save room for all the dishes that were excellent. My only complaint is the TV - it detracts from the ambiance and distracts from the food.
Really good other than the sequencing. Cocktails ordered first came out after the first course, wine pairing for the first course came to the table 10 minutes before the food it was to be paired with. One persons cocktail was forgotten, 3 mains arrived at least 10 minutes before the 4th (last person), desserts were brought to the table before the mains were all eaten. Server offered to help out with the bill due to all the mix ups and took $1.00 off the bill...
Went for Dine Out 2018. Picked this restaurant for it's vegetarian options - nice to have something other than pasta and risotto. The food was delicious and unique! Had some good BC white wine too.
the food was form heavy, function light.
Who's idea was it to make a super frozen cheesecake in the shape of a sphere and give you a spoon to eat it with. what a mess...
This was nice modern Vietnamese food which is different than just your typical bowl of pho. I quick enjoyed the food - it was presented well, and yummy.
Only had a quick bite so hard to judge, but what we did have, we enjoyed.
We ordered an assortment of appies and mains for a group of 6. Everything was good, tasted authentic and not too spicy for those that are sensitive to spicy food. Being very familiar with south East Asian cuisine, I really appreciated the use of authentic spices in the dishes. Service was good too, the server checked back regularly to top up our teapot. We will definitely go back again!
The dishes on the menu didn’t really excite me. The soup dumplings are not real soup dumpling it was a nice attempt to incorporate Vietnamese flavours. There was a gelatin but it was warm. Their happy hour drink specials were good.
Really enjoyed our meal. Other reviewers that claim the portions are small, must have really big appetites or perhaps just didn't order enough dishes?? My husband and I left stuffed with enough leftovers to have dinner the following night! Dishes were creative and flavourful. We especially enjoyed the duck fry bread and the duck noir. Really good value for a nice Yaletown restaurant.
Food was tasty but the server brought all dishes at once instead of bringing them out in order. Two allies, one noodle soup and a protein dish. The place also had a big party of 8+ people and kids which got out of control and the restaurant did not do anything.
Surprisingly good fusion Vietnamese food. Very creative and ultra tasty.
Would have liked to see some brut sparkling wine on the menu.
