House of Blues Restaurant & Bar - San Diego Ratings and Reviews
This is our second time dining at HOB before a show, and we’ve always had a great experience! The food is delicious! Great selection of Southern eats, fantastic service and cozy and casual atmosphere. Reasonable prices for a quality dinner. Love the bluesy background music, and decor!
Enjoying dinner before a show is really a treat here:)
This was likely the worst dining experience I ever had. First of all, everything is so spicy here that even the water was sharp. We asked clearly in advance if we could have food with no pepper or sharp spices - and went so far as to order a plain grilled chicken sandwich as a stand-by. It came topped with inedible, spicy coleslaw and pickle slices that nearly killed my wife they were so sharp (she couldn’t stop choking for five minutes.) The beans had a kick, the meat had a kick, basically everything had a kick. OK, maybe that’s your thing, but we asked in advance if we could get the food without the spice and were assured that we could. Then, we sat with soft drinks empty for most of the meal as the server was flirting with one of the other customers. In addition, there was a live musician that we got to listen to at the same time the restaurant was playing recorded music over its PA – a real cacophony preventing relaxing dining. Then, when they finally turned-off the recorded music the musician took more time tuning guitars and chatting up who he was flirting with than playing any music. To top the night off, our server brought over a very hot dessert plate and handed it to us without warning – so our souvenirs from the evening were heartburn, headaches and a burnt palm. All this at double what we should have paid (even with a discount.) AVOID THIS DUMP – TOURIST TRAP!
I've always enjoyed HOB because of the atmosphere and vibe, but not necessarily the food. But I had one of the best meals Saturday night. I ordered the grilled salmon (sans the blackening). It came with a tomato and cucumber salad that was interesting and delicious. Loved it!
We had a reservation so we got in right away (it was also before the evening rush). Greeter/host was very friendly and professional. Decor was great, fun atmosphere.
Moderate wait for the food. Food was ok, but honestly nothing special, especially for the price. Server checked on us once during the meal and didn't refill our drinks until we were about to leave; a man who I assume was the manager checked on us more than the server did.
Daughter found a long hair in her food and our meal essentially stopped right then. We were not charged for daughter's meal, and were given an additional discount, so props to the manager.
Staff was friendly and we were promptly seated. Food was excellent. They were accommodating with the fact that our group didn't arrive all at once. We ordered some drinks and waited to order food. Most of the party arrived about 20 minutes later. We ordered without a fuss. I went with the jambalaya and added shrimp. Burgers looked good as well. The last person in our party arrived after we ordered, and they were a bit busier by then which delayed his good even more. We we almost done with dinner when they brought his out, BUT because of the delay, they paid for his meal without us even asking.
Very cool venue - have always loved the decor and ambience. Just light enough to read the menu, but set a nice mood. Real (gasp!) candles on the table. Talent for the show walked by our table. Food is surprisingly good, and reasonably priced. Was just a little slow getting the drinks and waters to the table going, but server was very busy, and very sweet about it. Recommend!
Service was bad our waitress kept disappearing our food took 45min. All we ordered was a burger and wings . I was ready to leave they had karaoke. I thought house of blues played jazz, live bands.. it would take 20min for the waitress to bring a beer. My boyfriend likes to have 7beers when we are out he only had 2. In the 130hr we were there. We left and went to another place, no I won't be going there again
My husband and I went here for our 6 year anniversary and were so pleasantly surprise with our experience. Several hosted teas and servers wishes us a happy anniversary and we were also provided champagne to celebrate, free of charge! Once dinner was over we went to the Boyce Avenue concert at the house of blue concert hall. Wonderful date night, I recommend!
I took my wife here last Saturday night (Sep 23rd, 2017) for our wedding anniversary and for a concert afterwards (Ben Folds - AWESOME CONCERT!). We had never eaten here before and may not ever eat there again. HOWEVER, please understand, the service was very good. The atmosphere was pretty good. It was the food that we were just not generally impressed with. My wife did like her appetizer of garlic fries, but her fish tacos entree was just okay. Likewise, the cajun shrimp appetizer I got was pretty good, but the southern fried chicken, mac n cheese and tater tots were nothing special to me. The Hurricane I ordered was quite tasty if you like alcoholic beverages. My wife's fuzzy naval on the other hand tasted . . . weird? Like there was carbonation in it or something perhaps? The desserts we had were coconut pie and the 3 layer chocolate cake. The cake was quite good, but the pie not so much. Now, with that being said, they also brought us complimentary champagne and 2 chocolate covered strawberries. Both were good and a nice touch to the evening. As I said, the service was quite good, it was just the food that was kind of lacking for us. However, our bill came to $85 and for a night out at a decent restaurant with 2 appetizers, 2 mixed drinks, 2 desserts, entree's AND the complimentary champagne and strawberries, I'm not really complaining - just being honest with the experience. We might come back again just for the appetizers and Hurricane's and the chocolate cake :-)
Good food; great service and atmosphere. A little pricey, but included free music. We went Tuesday night and the place was not crowded. Food came quickly; good portions and taste. Highlight was Robin Henkel playing amazing slide guitar, old blues, jazz, and originals. Definitely recommend seeing him, and House of Blues is a great venue for it.
The first night we were there the service was horrible but the venue was very busy. Our server was very nice just did not have time to wait on our table and they were understaffed. Manager did make it up to us and they definitely have a great management staff in place and customer service staff and policies and procedures. The next night was better the service was amazing the food was amazing and the show was amazing!
Fantastic music (free) and reasonably priced comfort food with good-sized portions. The blues band that played in the bar area was skilled and had high quality sound equipment. Our trio had a variety of dinners (all what you would expect at this chain) from salad to fried chicken. No complaints. The band was loud so if you are thinking of making small talk with a new date, this might not be your place. If you want to hear talented musicians and leave full, this is your place. We didn't go to the larger concert hall but would definitely try it next time. Staff was friendly and seated us as soon as we arrived even though we were early.
I've been to other House of Blues Rest but I'm not exactly sure what it was about this one, I really liked better....probably the energetic vibes coming from both the hostess & customers- We were there to see a show "Gente de Zona" & everone just seemed so pumped! It was pretty cool :)
We enjoyed our time very much. Our server was awesome she was very attentive unfortunately forgot her name but we do remember her silver and purple hair 😊. Anyways food was good had the vegetable flatbread and pan fried chicken with tater tots and mac and cheese. Will come back in the near future.
We frequent the restaurant before concerts because it's convenient. The service was great but the entree was awful. My husband and I ordered the tots as an appetizer and split the steak. Everything came out at the same time which was odd. The steak was medium well when we ordered medium rare and it was extremely salty. The potatoes were so dry it was difficult to eat them. Normally I would send it back but we didn't want to miss any of the concert. Was a disappointment especially when it wasn't very busy.
Would like to return to House of Blues, San Diego, for their great food, fun atmosphere and great service. The chicken & waffle skewers, shrimp & grits, garlic fries and a watermelon margarita hit the spot for a before concert meal. Parking is difficult and pricey but the reasonable price of the food made up for it. It was a perfect night.
