Robert was a great server and the food was good as always.
Please give me an e-mail address for the Hotoke address
We had a lovely evening at Hotoke for a pre Theatre dinner. We thoroughly enjoyed the Latin sushi. The Mamasita was to die for. We'll most certainly return.
Had not been to Hotoke in quite some time. The food was excellent. The popcorn shrimp is amazing. For my entree I had the salmon! WOW. Presentation was on point as well. Have to more often given that is not too far from work or home.
I wish I could provide a review, however, you (OpenTable) booked a reservation for a restaurant that is closed on Sundays! How does that happen?!? We went to the restaurant only to find it closed. Very disappointed with OpenTable as a result of this.
I went here for my birthday dinner last Saturday. And it was just a terrible experience. I've been here before and had a nice time, that's why I chose it for my birthday. But this time, the whole experience was dismal. Dinner took 2 hours because of all the waiting we were doing. Most of the time we just couldn't find our waitress, because she seemed to be splitting her time between the huge surprise dinner party on the upper level. I feel there should be separate servers for a large dinner party like that. We had to just flag down any server who happened to walke by our table if we needed anything. And then when our meals finally came, I was disappointed as well. My porkchop was so tough and thick to cut into, I had to ask another server for a steak knife. And even then, it was still difficult to cut. I had to have my boyfriend cut it for me and he agreed that it should've been cooked longer, so it would be easier to cut into and eat. My sister's dish was good though, she had the salmon and my boyfriend ordered the sushi, which was also tasty. I was just disappointed with my meal because I just wanted to have a nice dinner for my birthday. I'm just hoping maybe they were having an off night, because I honestly like the whole ambiance of it.
Very disappointing. We have been to this restaurant a few times before and enjoyed it. This time the service was terrible and the food was so/so. Will not be going back.
Very nice place in the center of New Brunswick. It was a little difficult to find the front door when we arrived, but when we walked in it felt like we transformed to a whole new world. Beautifully decorated. Two large bars and a lot of seating . I was here on a Wednesday evening so it wasn't that busy @ 6:00 but every dish we had was outStanding! Will be going back soon!!
Booked a table via Open Table, a day before our reservation, Hotoke called VERY RUDELY and said they weren't open on Sundays, and then hung up on me while I was inquiring to reserve a table for another day. Why does Open Table allow users to book tables on days when restaurants are closed?
Modern, contemporary, asian cuisine. Sushi, great duck fried rice, succulent ribs, good skewers, awesome tartare. Service could be improved, but I'll go back again.
Sad you and the restaurant don't communication
You took two reservations and the restaurant was closed after driving up over 45 minutes. Poor business
Everything was delicious, and the server was great. Just a little pricey for what it was.
We had dined at Hotoke a few years back and had a great experience. I guess through the years it has gone down hill. When we entered on a Friday night and most of the restaurant was empty we should have known something wasn't right. Our waiter had terrible communication skills. It must have been his first day. The martini drinks were overpriced and super sweet.
We waited a long time for our drinks and our dinner. Only to be told that they were serving a large party which held up the kitchen. I can understand that if the rest of the restaurant was also busy but it was empty. The kitchen delay did not give an excuse for such a long wait on drinks. Would not return to this restaurant. There are plenty of good sushi spots in the area that we do not need to deal with bad service and bad food.
Food was fantastic but the noise level was very uncomfortable.
I don't leave reviews, but I just had to this time. It's a very nice place. The setup creates a very nice mood. The food is good with reasonable prices and the service was good.
Reseration was made for 8:30PM. We didn't start eating dinner until 11:30 PM because of how long it took for our meals to come out.
GREAT FOOD. SERVICE CAN BE A BIT FASTER WHEN YOU COME IN, BUT OVERALL A GOOD EXPERIENCE!
Ordered Sushi from the menu and came out wrong, ordered entree and came out wrong. Ordered salad that came after the entree. Food was so so ar best. Manager advised he would take entree off bill but didn't initially do it. Bill was wrong as they charged us for what they brought out not what we ordered and we didn't even eat it. I musy say this is the worst experience I have had and couldn't get out of there quick enough. I do not reccomend this place to anyone. Plenty of places to eat in New Brunswick.
The food was delicious- everyone enjoyed what they ordered. The service, however, was pretty terrible. We waited forever to order drinks, then our entrees. The waiter was not very knowledgeable about the menu. Although we were not in a rush, 3 hours was a bit long
Went to Hotoke for a girls night out. Wednesday night two for one appetizers! Great deal! The table shared shrimp dumplings and vegetable egg rolls and everyone was satisfied! I ordered the Hotoke house salad was an upgrade from the typical Japanese house salad with ginger dressing. I also ordered the Paradise roll which was fresh and the sauce was delicious! The atmosphere is really fun and modern. We loved the big Buddha and lounge like atmosphere.
Pre-theater dinner of apps with drinks. Wednesday was 1/2 price on drinks and buy one get one free for apps. We did a great tasting of the apps and some were so good we ordered again (Tartare Trio). Duck confit and sweet yam dumplings were also good. Fun time was had by all!
Quite Monday evening. Food was good, some confusion on the special offers which was handled well at the end of the evening. Overall a good meal for a team dinner of 8
The ambiance is Asian contemporary, with a Giant gold Buddha as the visual centerpiece. On looks alone, this is a quality restaurant in the downtown New Brunswick and located quite close to the theater district. The food quality is fairly good, though my half a roasted duck was too well done and lacked the pinkish warm center that should be present. Nonetheless, the overall menu selection and food quality was worth the reasonable prices. The main negative was service time. The staff were well-intentioned, but the lengthy waits between courses makes this a tough choice if you are on the clock. I recommend you arrive at least two hours before showtime if you elect to dine pre-theater. Otherwise, there is enough to justify a second bite of the apple.
This was a good place for a leisurely dinner. Service was good. Waitress was knowledgeable. Cocktails were good. Good wine list.
Excellent as always. The Sushi is FRESH! One of my favorite business meal destinations.
Hotoke is a solid Asian-fusion restaurant, with creative bar menu and some very good items on the menu. The ambiance is lovely--and interestingly not deep in the dark like many similar restaurants. The food is uneven, though; for instance, some appetizer items (dumplings, skewers) are quite good, while other things (spring rolls, for example) are surprisingly bland. The sushi was very disappointing, and surprisingly flavorless. Still, with some careful navigating of the menu and reasonable expectations, not a bad restaurant at all. It should be noted that the service was friendly and outstandingly attentive.
Went for food and drinks after the State Theater. We were happy with our choice and would definitely go back. Staff was very friendly polite and accommodating. Noise level was low and the space was welcoming and comfortable. The food was even better than I expected and was reasonably priced. Overall great experience.
My main issue was a good portion of the menu was not available. and we didn't find out until we ordered something that wasn't. It would be nice to know that before you make a decision.
We were there for the hubb city event. First time there but had a fab time with my daughter her friends and the hubby. Can't wait to go back!
The first five wine bottle selections were not available and when we requested tastings of each, 3 of 5 were completely oxidized....
The meal itself was adequate.
I have been to Hotoke numerous times over the years. Service has always been slow, but it's an attractive place - and what's the hurry?
This time service was AWFUL. We waited more than 20 minutes for our drinks and even longer for the appetizers. And a long time after that for the mains. Since we knew that some of them would be quickly prepared and others would be longer we specifically asked that each dish be brought out as soon as it was ready. Instead they all came out at once, and some of them were cold -- in spite of our specific instruction.
The worst shock came when the bill was presented. Most mains cost approx $20-25. We were told about a special fish but didn't think to ask its cost. Only then we learned that the special fish was $50 !!!
We will NOT be going back to Hotoke -- EVER !!!
It was awful! We were two couples celebrating an anniversary. Reservations had been made several days in advance. A "special" menu was presented. It stated that ONLY that a very limited prix fix menu could be used @ $39.95 per person, and you get to chose 3 items from section one and 3 items from the second section and also included a beverage and dessert. We all thought that was rather generous but tasting menus are not that unusual. Our waiter came and apologized saying only one choice per section. OK they had a typo but did we need to point it out? I had an email from Hotoke for a complementary appetizer. Nope can't be used - only the special menu! Also had a coupon for a discount. No can't use that either. The waiter was embarrassed and tried to come up with a solution - he spoke to the manager to see what could be done. Nothing was her answer. She came over to the table and in an extremely nasty way told us there was live music later and that was the menu! We explained we had a reservation and no mention of the special menu or restrictions was ever mentioned and we would be long gone before the music began as we were going to a show. Her response: "tough!" We LEFT! Will never go back which is too bad but as long as that manager is there we will not be back (she could have said essentialy the same thing in a pleasant voice and with an apology - something like I'm so sorry but this is all we can do tonight hope you understand let me but you a drink and so on). New name: NOHOTOKE!
Our dinner was excellent but the service and hostess were sub-par. The hostess was below sub-par. When we arrived for our 6:30 p.m. reservation, we were told that they were booked solid with reservations. She whispered, I had to ask her to speak louder, that if we wanted, we could take the one (worst table in the restaurant), or wait 15 minutes when another would open. I thought maybe since we only reserved our table yesterday for a Saturday, that was understandable. However, the restaurant was completely empty except for two couples seated at tables for four, and one other foursome at a table for four. A large group of 16 people came in shortly afterward, taking up a row of tables for two along the wall. This still left the entire restaurant more than half empty while we sat at a very small table, squashed into the least likeable space, with no view of the ambiance and decor of the restaurant (buddha statue, colors etc.). We were never offered another table, and the restaurant was still more than half empty by the time we left at 7:35 p.m. No rush of people with reservations arrived. The hostess never looked us in the face as we left, never mind her acknowledging us by saying "have a good evening," etc. which is customarily how guests are acknowledged when leaving an establishment where you've just spent a lot of money and had hoped to be treated well. Our waitress brought our appetizers to the table but seemed to have difficulty figuring out just where to put what. Maybe it's because we were in one of the smallest tables in the restaurant and the lack of space was just too perplexing for her. Anyway, we were extremely disappointed in the service. We would very much like to return because the food was why we came, and it did not disappoint. The younger staff need training.
The sashimi and sushi were beautifully presented and fresh.
Service was horrible and the food was just ok. The poor waitress was working almost by herself. The food and drinks were just ok at at 11 you got kicked out of your seats and had to stand in the crowded bar area. Would not go back
The staff was very friendly and answered all our questions about the menu. They also went out of their way to make sure we were happy with the food and the service. We look forward to going again soon. Thank you, Hotoke!
Alex was a great waiter! All of the food was great from the sushi and grilled octopus appetizers to the entrees. We are early, so it was nice and quiet.
Went to dinner with a few of our friends and we had a pretty good time. Food was great and the martini's were prepared on point. The only issue was, we waited a little while for a server
to approach our table and offer at least water to get the night started. Also it appears menu's
were at a premium as we had to share 1 sushi menu across 4 people:) other than that the food
was great and drinks as well. We will be back. OBTW- We paid cash for our meal so we were given a nice discount, so go to the ATM before you arrive:)
We went here for NYE 2017 and it was a horrible experience. We paid $300 for the VIP package and it was the furthest thing from VIP. We got seated in the bar at a small table, no one came over to offer us anything and then once the bar got crowded, we were stuck in this small table in the middle of a crowded bar. We had to find someone to get us our bottle and the service was horrible. This restaurant is one we really like however this event was unorganized and over crowded. We couldn't even stay until midnight. Not VIP at all.
Sadly I can't provide feedback on all areas as it's greyed out, but Hotoke was a great place to dine. I had heard about them for years but never came in before. Food was delicious, others I was with said that the sushi was amazing. Food actually had a taste and not only salt. Our server was AMAZING! Eventhough i'm vegan, I woudl certainly consider returning. Please consider having vegan food added to your menu.
