About this restaurant

  • Charming
  • Dog-friendly
  • Great for outdoor dining
Believed to date back to the 17th century the Horse & Groom was originally used to house local farmer workers, with the increase in horse drawn traffic using the old Hastings Road the property was utilised to offer weary travellers a place to rest and stable their horse ready for their onward journey. It then, and has to this date, become known as the Horse and Groom . Free of tie, the pub now offers the traditional country pub fair, set in the glorious surroundings of Rushlake Green, with its picturesque village properties encircling the village green, centre of the villages attraction and host to many winter and summer events. The pub with it’s large private gardens offers a friendly and secure environment for families to enjoy beautiful views over the adjoining rolling Sussex countryside.

Have been here multiple times, but will not be going again. While serving staff were friendly, three out of four meals were poor and one was inedible. Two of us had ribs - they were very dry and chewy. My sister ordered rump steak medium, but receive a piece of meat that was largely raw, no crust and consisted mainly of fat and gristle. When we complained, we were told the chef said there was nothing wrong with the steak. We were offered a few slices of ham (which my sister was happy to eat). Because we were sat outside, we had to pay for our food when ordered, otherwise I would not have paid for the rump. We were not offered anything other than the slices of ham by way of compensation, which I thought was poor customer service. It's a nice country pub, but after a recent change of hands, it seems the quality of the food has fallen well below what it used to be. We will not be going back.

Again we had a very nice Sunday Roast,it’s an hour to drive but is well worth it, the portions are a good size and maybe one day we will get to a desert, definitely worth a stop by.

Lovely relaxed meal with locally produced pies, mash and veg. Didn’t need dessert but had it anyway! Delicious!

We enjoyed a very nice roast dinner this afternoon, in fact my wife and I agreed it was the best we had had as we like to go for a roast at least one Sunday in the month. Unfortunately we didn’t do it justice as we had a prawn cocktail starter which was also very nice but filling. I’m sure we will return in the not too distant future.

Great homely warm friendly pub with lovely staff, an open fire. It was perfect for us because we came from all different parts of Sussex with our Dogs went for a wonderful dog walk at the side of the pub and then went for the most delicious Sunday Lunch. Fantastic experience the suet steak and kidney pie was scrumptious mashed potatoes, a pile of veg lashings of gravy. Fresh tasty prawn cocktails. Honest good home cooked grub like my mum used to make. Not pretentious really fab place. Will definitely go again!
