The night spent with my wife on her birthday! We come here for a reason. Great food and service. We will be back!! Many thanks.
Hoq is one of our favorites. We’ve always great service and wonderful food experiences here. This visit was our anniversary celebration.
Our table of seven all enjoyed our evening at HoQ. The food was excellent, the service was outstanding and we would recommend this restaurant to anyone who likes a special night out.
Awesome food and service. Great wine selection too!! A great overalll experience! Highly recommend!
Recognizing that a farm to table restaurant with a seasonal menu will by nature have its hits and misses, our meal last night, our first meal at HoQ, was extremely underwhelming. Nothing remotely original or spectacular. More concerning was the cost of this very ordinary meal: $250 for 4 with no bottle of wine or dessert, with two of our party ordering the least expensive vegetarian entree. At that price I was expecting something really special, and it was not. Our waiter was great. The place was also pretty dead for a Friday night. It felt like they’d kinda given up. Sorry.
Hello - We apologize you did not enjoy your experience with us. We source almost our entire menu locally, supporting small farmers and producers. We also make nearly everything from scratch in our kitchen. Our prices reflect this. Thank you for your review and for giving us a try! - HoQ Management
Item descriptions and ingredients lead you to assume the dish will be flavorful, but then each bite is less than average.
Small portions and even smaller drink pours.
Excellent experience, server Ann was super, food was great.
All the food was fantastic. My chicken was so tender as was my husband’s lamb. They accommodated my dairy sensitivity for the dessert which was awesome
We went for restaurant week and had great food and phenomenal service!
Felt wonderful to consume healthy foods grown near by!
Server David was quite knowledgeable and helpful!
Everything tasted amazing!!!
Lovely place! Will return!
Went for DSM restaurant week. Excellent service. Thanks David. Food very tasty. Will go back again.
Great local restaurant in the East Village area. Nice quiet atmosphere with plenty of room between tables to make it feel quite private.
Food, drinks and service was all very good. The only real issue was the food portions for the price was tiny.
I understand locally sourced foods may cost a little more and have no problem with that of its a decent portion.
I opted for the blackened walleye which was again, very very good. But it was about the size of a deck of cards with a few scattered vegetables. Man I would have loved a second filet.
Everyone at the table made a comment about the smallish portions relative to price for each item.
With food and drinks, we were around $200 for 2 people.
Delicious meal from start to finish. We had perrogis for our appetizer and they were very flavorful and cooked to perfection.
I had the lamb shank which i was able to eat with my fork because it fell off the bone. It was over a bed of Kale which I ate every bite of. Delicious and I can’t wait to go back!
HOQ Has some of the best food in town. The menu is unique and always excellent. Great ambiance for special occasions and date nights too.
outstanding food and service as always we are very happy that someone like Suman and his staff are in Des Moines.
The food was excellent as was the service. I always have a wonderful dinner at HoQ.
As always all points STELLAR.
I am a creature of habit … CANNOT quit ordering and enjoying the salmon, kale, carrots and lentils in parchment!! DOES NOT DISAPPOINT!!!
Tried the rhubarb crisp with a dollop of ice cream for dessert … YUM! Tangy, crunchy and DELICIOUS!!
We dined at HoQ for my husband’s birthday tonight and the service and food were exceptional! We have dined here a couple of other times and every time it keeps getting better! We love the rotating menu because it gives us an opportunity to try something new every time. Tonight we had the walking taco as an appetizer, the market steak and veggies (flat iron with kale and steamed carrots) and finished off with the cake, ice cream, and chefs choice dessert. While all of these things may sound commonplace at any restaurant, the chef finds a way to make the ordinary turn out to be extraordinary and elegant every time! Every meal enjoyed here is an experience. We cannot thank the staff enough for making my husband’s birthday memorable. We cannot wait to be back soon!
I've been to HoQ several times, mostly with my son. I brought my brother and niece here while they were visiting from Oregon. HoQ didn't disappoint. As always, great food and great people.
In Des Moines for a relatively short visit. Will eat at HoQ again.
Our first time dining at HoQ with another couple. The grass-fed steak entrée I ordered was very tough and I wasn't able to chew it. My husband tried a bite as well and we both had to spit it out into a napkin after trying to chew it. The salmon entrée was enjoyed by two in our party and they couldn't stop talking about how delicious it was. The 4th person ordered the Mediterranean Bowl and I was surprised at how small the bowl was, no bigger than a standard cereal bowl for $16 (for add'l $8 you could add chicken). The falafel looked like it sat in the oven all day, overcooked and very dry. Dessert was a delicious Seasonal Fruit Crisp with vanilla ice cream, highly recommend! Our server was very gracious and apologetic about the steak and offered to replace it with another dish.
Thank you so much for your support and for giving us a try! We apologize for your experience with your steak and the Mediterranean Bowl. Our grass-fed beef is extremely lean and yes, can become tough depending. We are always happy to remake a dish or get something else for you. Thank you for your review, and we hope to serve you again soon! - HoQ Team
The real issue here was one of miscommunication. We went to HoQ expecting upscale dining; the food did not measure up.
The tomato bisque was a highlight, and tasted quite good, begging the question whether it was prepared in the same kitchen responsible for the rest of our disappointing meal. The olive oil smily face, scribbled atop said soup, suggested otherwise.
Next up was salmon, overcooked, served on a bed of kale with potato chunks and carrot peelings, in a white paper bag. Our kindly but obviously exhausted waitress dutifully smothered the entire matter in a greasy, flavorless sauce which I can, indeed, believe was not butter. (A foil-wrapped packet of land-o-lakes would have been greatly preferable.)
For desert we were served a single slice of entirely unremarkable chocolate cake.
Needless to say, we will not be returning to HoQ. I do not anticipate it will be open much longer. The staff, though warm and well-meaning, were clearly operating without the leadership or direction of a trained chef or an experienced restauranteur. I wish them all the very best—which is to say, jobs at better-managed restaurants.
Hello - We apologize your experience did not meet expectations. We try our best to give every guest a great experience, and it sounds like we fell short. It is always best to let us know before you walk out the door. We love the chance to fix anything we can rather than read about it later. Thank you for giving us a try! - HoQ Management
Amazing, fresh food. Service was A+
We were completely WOWED by the food and the experience. The Chef brought out flavors you've only read about. Prices were very reasonable. I can't wait to go back!
Amazing food, not overly crowded, will definitely be going back!
The food was primarily local and excellent. The service was excellent. To end a meal with sorbet topped with a fresh flower was quite fun.
We enjoyed everything except for the Summer Season Peach Tart. The crust didn’t hold up (it disintegrated) and the crust flavor was bland and oily. The accompanying ice cream was good.
Hi there - Thank you for your support and for giving us a try. We apologize you didn't enjoy everything about your experience. Next time, mention your thoughts to your server or manager. We would have loved to send you something else for dessert or make it up some other way. Thank you for your continued support! - HoQ Team
Our waitress made sure we were able to have a leisurely meal and still be done in time to make our show.
The service is beyond welcoming, they are such professionals, and welcoming.
The food compares to none. The Chef at this restaurant brings the freshest meals to your table.
I thought their prices are very reasonable for the quality of the food, ambiance, staff, and very clean restrooms!
Our server David was outstanding and the food was exquisite. Great atmosphere and great location.
Steak was overpriced and fair quality. Salmon was decent. Service was fair at best. This was our second visit. Not rushing to go back.
Dining w our daughter! Cheese plate was our starter. Great selection of Iowa cheeses. We co-opted the house bread service to go with it, amazing! My daughter enjoyed the chicken burrito, my wife rather surprisingly ordered the lamb steak special and found it to be tender and delicious, I opted for the steak special, all were perfectly cooked and came with some very enticing sides. Our waiter David was amazing attended without being obtrusive and explained everything very well. One must always mention the environment nowadays, and we felt safe in an open airy dining room with ample spacing. What a gem we discovered on OpenTable!
The quality of the food and service were both outstanding! We loved it.
For an elegant evening for a special occasion this is the place to enjoy!
Every bite was delicious from the warm naan to the entree. Great atmosphere in the East Village. A gem in the Midwest.
Excellent service and food was amazing. A great experience and evening.
David was wonderful. Menu imaginative and well-prepared.
