Hopscotch - Oakland
Tiny space but service and food were great. From the oysters hopafeller to the fried chicken with the gem salad in between--everything was delicious and generous in size for sharing.
Cute place, but the food is marginal. I was expecting something much better. At the price, I would find another restaurant to patronize - there are so many good ones around!
Everything we ordered was excellent, appetizer, main and dessert. Our waiter was attentive but not obtrusive. Noise level was such that we could enjoy a nice conversation. Restaurant is very cute, reminded us of Europe. Loved it!
Enjoyed trying this neighborhood gem. Staff was very accommodating with seating, we chose the annex space next to the main restaurant. It was a bit quieter. I would have given the restaurant 5 stars but our cocktails were very slow to be served. The bartender seemed to be preoccupied, maybe they need an additional bar person. The food was spectacular! Halibut & scallops cooked perfectly & seasoned to perfection. I will definitely go back.
Excellent neighborhood gem. Every bite was worth the trip and I will definitely cross the bridge anytime for Hopscotch!
We went at 3 p.m. -- the smaller happy hour menu was available - about 5 items - all great. Fried chicken, pork loin sandwich, hamburger -- at 3 we were the only ones there - perfect time. great meal. Friendly service -- we'll go back.
Everything was great except they were so late on our reservation and others it seems. Too long of a wait to be seated on a rez!
Really interesting flavors on the smoked brisket but the meat itself was tough. Excellent side dishes and the desserts were divine.
We were seated in the "other" room and after the remaining patrons left the waitress seemed to forget we were there. The food took a lot longer than usual to arrive and was a little less impressive than in past visits. Maybe it was just an off night for them.
We had reservations but still had to wait 15 minutes to get seated. And, despite my having told the hostess how much time we had, our food took so long to get to us (over 40 minutes), that we were almost late to our 8pm show. Finally, while I enjoyed the burger at Hopscotch, I was less impressed with the himachi crudo. So, overall, not good enough to warrant a repeat visit.
Hopscotch has delicious food, try the Caesar with cornbreaded oysters, yum. Also, the fried chicken is juicy, crunchy and terrific. It's a tiny restaurant, so best to book ahead. The wait staff is very attentive and friendly.
Everything is well crafted and delicious. From the drinks to the dessert, I am always happy when I leave Hopscotch!
Had a wonderful lunch there. Sunny table outside. Great appetizer tempura thing. Good sandwiches. Lovely waitress.
Good service, although drinks could have been refilled a bit more promptly. The kakiage appetizer is superb; the French fry appetizer is average. I tried the soba bucatini, which I greatly enjoyed. My colleagues had the tonkatsu sandwich and the fried chicken, which they loved. I had the chocolate mousse dessert, which was excellent.
We've eaten here several times for brunch and dinner. Our last visit was somewhat disappointing. The food was good but presentation and taste didn't seem up to par. We were a party of six and most of us had the same opinion. It's been a favorite of ours in the past for an interesting menu.
Fantastic food and great service. We walked away full, smiling, and looking forward to our next visit.
We ordered and shared:
Buttermilk Fried Chicken
The Hamachi Tartare was amazing, I would go back just for that! The rest of the food was so delicious! Great spot. The restaurant is small, they do have a few tables outside, which would be nice on a nice night.
Overall, would definitely recommend and would go back!
This is one of my favorite restaurants in Oakland. A colleague and I went for lunch. We started with the chicken wings, which are good but not superb. I had a fried chicken sandwich, which was great; she had a fried rice with pork belly, about which she raved. Dessert was the best part: I had almond mud pie while she had the donuts and butterscotch cream. Service was attentive.
We were celebrating my husband's birthday with our adult children. Our party size changed and the hostess was quick to see if they would be able to accommodate us. They could and we had a lovely time. As we were now 5 instead of 4, we were seated in the second dining room, which worked out fine, but I missed the hub-bub of the main restaurant. Fried chicken was delicious, as was the BBQ brisket. Don't miss out! Go to Hopscotch.
Good food but a bit pricey compared to other spots in the neighborhood. First time having dinner (only visited for lunch) and while convenience of location to Fox Theater is great, might stick with lunches at Hopscotch.
Service was quick, thorough, and friendly. The cocktails were an impressive blend of alcohol and flavors creating a pleasant buzz. I felt like trying them all! The entrée portions were large enough to share. We were glad we didn't and also glad we finished them, because they lasted us through the performance we attended after our meal.
We had tickets for the Billy Crystal show at the Fox Theatre and were looking for a place for a pre-show dinner. We were pleasantly surprised with the food and friendly atmosphere at Hopscotch and would recommend it for anyone going to a show or just going out. It's on San Pablo Avenue but only 2 blocks or so from the Fox so the convenience factor is high.
As usual it was great. Hamburger and chicken well worth waiting for.
Josh and I had a fantastic time, our server was ready to accommodate all of his crazy requests (smoked salt? garnishing the next drink!) and was patient despite how rocking the place was. Everyone was totally lovely and we look forward to spending many future date nights there.
This was my second time going to Hopscotch that week., so obviously I like it! I am telling all my friends and recommending the food. The first time I went on a Monday and had the shitake scramble off the industrial brunch menu. Delicious with arugula salad. The second time I went on a Saturday for brunch and tried the mushroom Benedict, great! Both times I had the donuts for dessert which are a must! The butterscotch crime is not overly sweet and the donut puffs are warm similar to beignets except with regular sugar on them. Made a reservation through open table, the first time we were given a table way in the back, so the next time I requested the window table. Much better lighting. The only thing that was a little disappointing was that I wrote as a note it was a birthday celebration and the waitress knew nothing about it. I'm unsure whether it was the fault of open table or the restaurant.
Hopscotch was exemplary in every way. Our server was friendly and knowledgeable. The food was interesting, a Japanese twist on American classics. I really didn't think I'd like a Yonsei Oyster, for example, because I typically hate uni, but it was stunningly delicious. And the rest of the food followed suit. Will definitely be going back.
Delicious, lovely service - a really super place. The team is fantastic and the food is epic
A small restaurant that is already a favorite of many...while the menu is not large, the options are great and the food was delightfully prepared and served in a timely manner. the staff is young, warm and welcoming. the wine list gave lots of options and there are cocktails as well as japanese alcoholic drinks. the menu reflects that the chef is part japanese and it adds to the depth of the tastes as well as the presentations. we are ready to go back with our kids.
Crab Caesar salad was excellent, but none of the other dishes stood out. The dessert was rock hard and we couldn't cut through it.
Our waiter didn't have the upbeat personality you would expect for customer facing staff.
Food was excellent but very small portions for the price and not great service (our waiter wasn't very friendly or helpful) left us wanting more. Don't think I'll be going back.
Foie gras gyoza had no foie gras. Brisket was all fat except for a couple bites. The fried chicken was very good, but inconsistency across dishes led to a low overall rating.
There were several disappointments. When we made reservations, there was no mention that it was a fixed price menu night, in fact there was a link to a menu that was not offered. We were very disappointed in our service and pacing: food was served before cocktails and later our wine came out well after our last course. We were rushed: I was asked if my plate could be cleared when I had my fork in hand and was still chewing on food. We paid a premium for a Valentine's dinner, and didn't mind doing this, except that rather than being offered an exceptional experience, it was subpar. I might give Hopscotch a second try, but defiantly not for a special occasion.
Excellent appetizers, solid entrees (fried chicken was great) and outstanding desserts. The mud pie was amazing!
This is a great place in the Uptown. Interesting and good food, especially their famous fried chicken and the pork chop. Great cocktail menu and wine list. Service is always great.
Hopscotch is a favorite. The food is always fresh delicious and a little different. Best fried chicken around. It's als a comfortable place.
My husband and I have been coming here for years. It is one of our most fav spots to dine. The food and drinks are amazing! Service is great, very friendly and helpful with any questions.
This is consistently one of my favorite restaurants in Oakland. A colleague and I had lunch. We started with tempura, perfectly prepared. She had soba lasagna, about which she raved, and I had the chicken sandwich, equally delicious. We split the terrific almond mud pie for dessert. Service was attentive.
Came here for oakland restaurant week and it was a great deal! Food was very good and the menu offering had a good variety to select from. We had their famous buttermilk fried chicken and it was perfect!!
The food and service was fantastic. Staff was very accommodating for our group.
We tried Hopscotch during restaurant week and as its a tiny space it was packed. The service and menu selection were spot on and I would reorder all the dishes that we had when I return.
