Overall, a very “eh” experience.
Mixed feelings about this restaurant. I wanted to love it, and there were definitely aspects that I did, but there were a few other issues that made me think, I may not go back. Our waitress was amazing, super personable and very accommodating. We also had a visit from the manager who did her job title justice.
The not so good things started with it being freezing, so cold I ate with my winter jacket on. Our cocktails were fabulous, and most of the food was pretty good. Mac and cheese was a-ma-zing, this is what I would go back for, however, the steak tips were underwhelming and way undercooked. Just about ruined my meal. Dessert was also disappointing. I would probably go again and see if they could redeem themselves.
Small plate eating ... edamame salad was good but other dishes like paella and Mac & cheese were disappointing. Pricey for small plates and food not really that good. Service was decent ... they were attentive but we felt a bit rushed. Won’t be going back.
Really good food and great service. Can get a little pricey for what it is, but very good overall.
This place is not committed to doing brunch. It's a terrible service, twice in a row. They can't even cook eggs. No matter how much they comp the meals, it can't make up for wasted time and less than mediocre food. I think they might be able to do alcohol, but the kitchen is a disaster and the service, for the most part, is arrogant and repulsive.
We had a fantastic meal at Hops n Scotch - from drinks to desserts, everything was delicious. Service was great. While it is somewhat loud, it is much quieter than other bars/taverns in the area, and we were able to keep up a good conversation without straining to hear.
Excellent restaurant with excellent drinks! We went for a nice dinner out on New Years Eve and had a wonderful time! The small plates were delicious, the drinks were really good, and the service was great!
Had high hopes based on the other reviewers, but was disappointed in all aspects of this restaurant. Our server was sweet, but quite clueless. Couldn’t remember anything we asked for and had to auction off our drinks and food. There were only 3 of us, so remembering who had the Shirley temple (child), beer (me) and wine (husband) shouldn’t have been difficult. Food was fine — nothing great and nothing special. Truffle fries were soggy, shrimp in paella were rubbery, chicken bits were dried and tough. My son ordered the chocolate lava cake for dessert. When it arrived it was very plain and we all commented on how it needed a sauce or ice cream. Then we remembered that it was supposed to come with a sauce. I had to stand up to find server and ask her about it. Although she had delivered it to the table she seemed surprised that there was no sauce. After talking to the chef, she came to the table to let us know they had run out of the sauce. She did bring a plate of strawberries and whipped cream which was lovely, but the dessert had already been eaten. They did not charge us for dessert, so that was a good thing. Won’t be back. Much better choices out there.
They try with the fancy drink menu. Sorry falls very short. Food had great name and descriptions but again fell short. Our server was great.
Fried brussels sprouts & french fries were amazing! Falafel was dry and flavorless. Mixed drinks were just okay - stick to the beer and scotch here.
In town for a few days, met with friends
Everything was great.
Went with 4 kids and 4 adults. Service was quick and our food was delicious.
Excellent Sunday brunch. Great food, good value and friendly service.
Good brunch option with a great drink menu. Also, the truffle home fries were amazing. Worth going back for those, for sure!
The only menu item I didn’t care for was the riced broccoli & cauliflower bowl with sausage. It didn’t have enough flavor.
The food and service were surprisingly good at this Brookline bar. Someone has put a lot of thought into their cocktail list and it offers many housemade elements. The menu is eclectic but everything we had except the greens salad was delicious. The buffalo chicken mac n cheese was especially good as was the chicken bao and churro dessert. We will be back.
Excellent location- close to the green line. Quiet ams relaxation.
Great place to catch up with friends
Great brunch menu and food.
The drinks were unique and the food was great! We particularly loved the fried brussel sprouts!
Eh. Beers are good though. Food so so
It was just mediocre. Nothing to write home about. Can’t really think of something super positive or negative to say. It was just ok.
The staff was very friendly. The food was hit or miss though (the group liked the waffles but not the benedicts as the hollandaise sauce had broken and didn’t taste right).
Very good for brunch. Food good but not exciting. Friendly service. Probably better for dinner or late evening.
Wait staff were phenomenal. We ordered the wrong food. The green peppers were not edible. We were told they weren’t spicy but they were. We couldn’t eat them.
Great beer and whiskey list. Certainly a nice venue for a friends night out. The dinner menu was very creative and the service was fast.
Food was delicious, service was great—we didn’t wait for anything. Dined upstairs, which was beautiful, quiet, and low key for a Saturday night.
Friendly and cozy, ideal for brunch and beer with friends
Cece was such an amazing waitress. The new menu they debuted on 5/8/2018 was absolutely fantastic and very exciting!
We had a quick bite here before a show in Allston. Food was good, staff was friendly and helpful, drinks were tasty.
I was surprised however that the bar did not push the whiskey selection considering the name.
Great service! They even had a nice little surprise for us for our anniversary.
We came for Marathon Monday so it was packed and we did have a large party! With that being said they had a set menu which included a $12 or $13 dollar burger which only came out as one slider with no toppings, when we asked for lettuce, tomatoes and onion, the waiter staff was unsure if they would be able to do that- luckily the kitchen did! The drink menu is wonderful, I enjoyed some good ciders however I was charged for a 12oz cider and given 8oz! Not thrilled with the overall experience, but it was a tough day for waiter staff with constant crowds!
Solid beer selection, good variety of apps, and Ruben was fantastic.
I was a little worried based on the bar atmosphere but the food and service were pleasant surprises.
Loved this spot! I got mac and cheese with truffled mushrooms, truffle fries, and beer. Everything was delicious. Also, the ambiance was really nice. It was perfect for my girls night--it wasn't too loud, and was comfortable seating, etc. Will definitely be going back!
Large group of college kids. Perfect
I was honestly pretty disappointed with my experience at Hops N Scotch. My boyfriend and I went for Valentine’s Day, which is also my birthday, to have a more casual dinner. The beer selection was okay, but was shorter than we expected. The food, however, left me very disheartened. My boyfriend’s steak was fine but my burger, ordered medium, was literally raw in the middle. The manager took it back and had a new one made, but it was also raw. Like not even medium-rare, which I would have eaten. I ended up getting a very mediocre grilled cheese because their pasta section wasn’t available. It turns out that the two couples next to us had had the same issues with their burgers. The manager was super nice about it and gave us a really delicious free desert sampler plate, but unfortunately I don’t think we’ll be returning.
I really, really, really, really wanted to love my Sunday brunch at HNS. I live 2 minutes away and it's super convenient and the employees are very nice and try very hard to please. If HNS wants to be a destination for brunch goers, they'll need to make some changes to some of the food. Without getting too specific, some of the portion sizes were disappointingly tiny (like kid-sized), some of the sides were bland and tasteless. However, the tater tots were outstanding and the bacon was cooked perfectly.
We'll try once more to see if it was an "off" day. If we get more of the same, we're done.
Not terrible not memorable.
Food was delicious. Seasoned perfectly, came out piping hot (yeah!), and just I don’t know what to say...perfect. Comforting. Tastes like you made it at home but better.
Theme of beer or scotch is fun and the list of both is impressive.
Most of all the management, host staff, and servers are gracious, kind, and knowledgeable. We loved the host who brought us in.
You really feel like they care you’re there. Kudos to the team and thank you.
