HopCity Tavern Ratings and Reviews
I live near this area but hadn't been here before. It was a convenient location to dine before attending the show at Arlene Schnitzer Music Hall. Not exactly a romantic environment but pleasant enough. The server was friendly and attentive. Food was good.
If you are a guest at the Hilton, which houses the restaurant, it is going to be a pretty good bet for convenience and for a good meal. The proclamation that they use locally sourced ingredients was a primary factor in my choice to try them.
The service was fine, although there was no one available to check us in for about 15 minutes. The food was fine too, but nothing special. I had the deviled eggs, which would have been better without the crumbled potato chips because they just gave me the sensation of shell in the egg salad. The bacon in the deviled eggs was a nice touch but it was so hard - not crispy - that I was left with nothing but chewy hard bacon in my mouth. The BLT was tasty but each mouthful produced more of an olive oil taste than anything else. It had been a long travel
Day for us so we asked to split and they did that without question and proactively split it in the plate and gave us each the fries if our choice. A lot of positives in our experience, including our server, but a few areas needing improvement.
I called to let them know we would be late and the person answering the phone did not seem to care and never told the hostess so when we got there our reservation had actually been canceled. There was still room for us however and the hostess was wonderful. The server we had to start with started out wonderful and then she disappeared without a trace. This left us baffled and confused and having to scramble to get attention from any staff we could to attend to us. The food however was very good. It was very healthy and was made quickly and served at the perfect temperature. There was good food available for kids and restricted diets such as GF, SF, EF, etc. However with the kids meal we were not told it came with a drink included in the price and when we noticed this is when the server had disappeared and we had to flag another staff person to obtain the drink, the check, the boxes to go, pay the check.
You could definitely feel like you were in the lobby of a hotel. Between the guy on the computer station and the reception desk full of hotel goers. The food was great and the waiters were nice. The drinks were overpriced and not good! Super loud group of girls there.
Staff was friendly and courteous. Decor is airy and open as would be expected for a hotel restaurant such as this. Put simply, the food does not rate. The menu needs to be thrown out and start from scratch. Flavourless and bland, nothing at all remarkable about all three of out meals. Try again.
I had last eaten in the cafe when it was Bistro 921. I always enjoyed the food. We were going to a concert and decided to eat before hand. Hop City seemed a good choice in part because of its proximity to the Schnitz. My brother and I enjoyed our meal (fish and chips, which I heartily recommend) greatly.
A good spot for a meal or drink before or after the theater. It's in Hilton, and a block away from the Newmark and Schnitzer theaters. Not an extensive menu, but each person in the group were happy with their meal. I had the halibut fish and chips, and found it perfectly cooked. Will definitely return next time I'm downtown for an event.
I checked out Hop City during Portland Dining Month. The value was fantastic. There was more than enough food and it was all wonderfully tasty and creative. The noise level was high, so if I had dined with others we would have had trouble hearing the conversation.
This was an absolutely wonderful dining experience in every way! There were six of us and we had great service by smiling professionals that appeared genInely interested in us. The drinks came fast and the menu was inventive and VERY tasty. All of us enjoyed our meal and entrees were price reasonably. I can't wait to go again and tast something else. There was also a nice later night Bar crowd. Nice find.
We placed our reservation on open table and our table was reserved and comfortable. Beverage service from our server was accurate & prompt.
Several entrees were offered with potato fries. The fish & chips and fries with the hamburger were very dry, over cooked & too crisp. Very disappointing. The burger was with wonderful beef yet for 18.50 was offered with American cheese. I offer this - chef, you are in Oregon use the signature Oregon cheddar TILLAMOOK!
I thought a restaurant at a Hilton would be a special occasion. The room and ambiance was that of a boarding house dining room with pretensions. The food was ok, server did her job albeit with a lot of gushing. Very noisy. It was ok once, I have no desire to go back.
First I was confused walking around the dining area because there was no designated host podium, the sever staff just said sit anywhere. So even if you had a reservation or not, I had to tell them I had a reservation After I seated myself. The server was late and it seem there were no designated server sections which took our server a long time to get to us because of how far the other tables were.
Food was good. Suggest extra sauce on the side because there wasn't enough on bun. The lamb burger was semi-dry because it was cooked well and not medium like I asked. The beet salad was good but the lentils seemed dry.
Great location and ambiance.
