So many farm-to-table restaurants, zero farms around. Homestead changes that a bit by growing vegetation on site.
Our son and his fiancée will be having their reception here so they wanted us to see it. We went during restaurant week. It was busy but the servers were wonderful. Our meal was very good, very creative. The french onion soup was especially delicious. I am very excited to have a wedding reception here!
The portions are tiny for the price! I doubt I will return. And while the service was good, it was almost annoying. We were interrupted by different people every five mins with either water refilling or asking if we were ok.
The food is delicious here, which is why I wanted to return but this likely will be last time I dine here. Our reservation for four people was on a Friday night during Chicago Restaurant Week and the service was rushed, which did not make me feel like a valued customer. I understand it's a multi-course event, but we felt uncomfortable and unwelcome from the very start. The server insisted the chefs "would not allow" a table to order two three course meals and two four course meals. I understand it's for the experience, but if the diners are OK with waiting for their friends to finish, why can't the restaurant allow it? The very worst was that the waitstaff took away silverware or plates before some of us had finished our courses, which felt unnecessary as there was no one waiting for our table and other tables were empty in the same time period. Our four course meal was finished in an hour and 15 minutes, which is not enjoyable. Although the food was good, I can't say I would return to this restaurant or recommend it to a friend because the dining experience was made uncomfortable by the hurried service.
Restaurant Week was a success at Homestead on the Roof!
Went for restaurant week 2018. Thought the value was mediocre. First course was decent, second course was the only redeeming factor as it was slightly above average. Dessert was hardly worth eating. Drinks overpriced and poorly made. Service was good but waitress was not very knowledgeable about the food.
Incredible menu for Restaurant Week. The food tasted fresh + delicious. The service was friendly + attentive. We can't wait to visit again over the summer to sit on the rooftop!
They are normally open in the summer. We went there during restaurant week bad idea.
Big fail during Restaurant Week... they were out of items on day 1, bread basket (which was the highlight of the meal) took 45 minutes to arrive, our first course never came, portions were small and tasted like they were missing ingredients (i.e. the beignets - not sweet at all and very heavy), we were never asked if we wanted a second drink even though we were seated for 3 hours just waiting for courses, manager thankfully ended up taking care of the bill but was pretty rude about it. Hopefully this was just a fluke.
It was the first night of restaurant week. Restaurant looked beautiful. Waitress was very friendly but she described each dish as either “amazing” or “phenomenal”—just a personal pet peeve. Soup came with no spoon and it was not hot—especially by the time we got the spoon. Ordered the 4 course w/ bread basket. Bread didn’t come until after the first course. It was worth the wait, but we had no bread for soup. Two different people wanted to clear our plates and we asked them to leave them to sop up the end with the bread we hadn’t gotten yet. We shouldn’t have had to wait (or pay) for that bread. The chicken and lamb were very very good!! Key lime dessert was not good and the beignets were ok. A very expensive meal and an ok experience.
The food was amazing. I particularly loved the lobster, it didn't come in the shell, but the juice was literally oozing out of it. And when I bit into it it was so fresh and soft and juicy.
The waiter was also really attentive - when I said a cocktail was okay, he offered to switch it as I hadn't really drunk it and he could tell I didn't want it. And then made a suggestion for a cocktail I would prefer. It was a lot more fruity and I preferred it much more.
Definitely my favourite restaurant during my trip to Chicago.
Great value for money Food was good Quality and the rooftop dining area was very clean.
Just found this place of course right before they shut down for winter!
Great farm to table, service and atmosphere.
I am a vegan, my dish was decent but not stellar. My dates loved his steak, we also shared hummas which was also very good. Wine list was very fun.
We will definitely go back.
The Entrees are delicious and the Small plates are perfect sizes. The wine is a little expensive.
Service was great and outdoor area is awesome. The donut French toast was burnt and the poached egg on my eggs Benedict was overcooked. Probably won't come here again.
Gave us the wrong appetizer. Ordered the egg plant but they were sold out so decided to give me the ratalouie without asking. Had a gift card but did not run the gift card and charged my cc full price.
We found this to be an unexpected gem in the heart of the Ukrainian Village. It is an amazing place to sit outside and enjoy the farm to table fare. We were celebrating our 28th anniversary and sipped a smoky Mezcal cocktail that was delicious! The dining room shuts down for the winter. I will, like the leaves, will return in the spring. Bravo!
Everything was great except the pork chop entree. It was luke warm and the pork seemed like it was smoked which was not in the description.
Our dinner on the roof was a unique, exceptional experience. The service was wonderful, from the persons I spoke with regarding the reservation for our group, to the mixologist, to the server. I have a restricted diet and they were very accommodating and attentive. It's a bit tricky to find through the pizza place, but well worth the hunt! I would definitely recommend this great find.
I was a little skeptical after previewing the menu but now I'm a believer! We started with the Panzanela appetizer that was soooo good. For entrees we had the pork chop and a special short rib.
Both were outstanding! Finished dinner off with the key lime tart which resulted in two very content diners. Corin our server was terrific and could not have been better.
Seems on weekends West Town Bakery is there serving breakfast /brunch - we didn't expect that, but the food was awesome!
Cocktails were below average...dinner made up for it...enjoyed the meal..nice atmosphere
Great ambience with chill vibe. Makes for a very relaxing, enjoyable experience.
Had a nice dinner with friends. Out door seating is the better than indoor, pick a beautiful night!
We had a lovely birthday dinner date at Homestead on the Roof! Although the night was chilly, the fire/ heating columns they had kept us warm and provided an intimate, cozy environment. I highly suggest checking out their specialty cocktails-- on the pricey side, but they were good. Food was excellent!
Beautiful atmosphere that was very much unique and service was wonderful.
Service was impeccable. Food was good but surprised at the lack of vegan options for a fresh harvest type presentation.
The rooftop is lovely- with a perfect view of the garden. Beautifully fresh dishes really fill you up. There are a limited number of items on the menu, which I find great. The one challenge I have is that the service did not do the food justice. There was nothing that was bad or incorrect, the service just didn't complement the food as much as it could.
Disclaimer: We love Homestead so much we got married there.
Homestead is amazing. It's been our favorite restaurant in the city since we first discovered it in 2014. The food, service, and ambiance are all fantastic. The outdoor space is lovely, but the inside is quiet, intimate and beautiful too. We've never had a bad meal or experience on over a dozen visits.
The food and beverage menus both change seasonally and utilize produce from their rooftop garden. The chicken and gazpacho dishes are always amazing - if you ever have the chance to try them - you won't regret it. That being said, we're constantly impressed by all of their dishes. We trust the team at Homestead so much that we're willing to try items there that we wouldn't normally be willing to test (like pork trotter).
The waitstaff is fantastic and really works as a team. You have one main waiter/waitress but others don't hesitate to clear plates or refill water glasses.
Homestead is intimate even when it's busy, but we have never actually had to wait for a table (we like sitting outside on the rooftop, but also inside in their rustic setting with the bar). Regardless, there's almost always reservations available on opentable even several hours before you want to come - or you can just show up and wing it without much worry. We visited Girl and the Goat recently (after making a reservation 4 weeks out) and had a nice experience, but the noise level and price were both significantly higher than Homestead.
Excellent all-around. Best burger ever, although this is NOT a burger joint!
Hard to find, don't expect it to be about the pizza restaurant signage could be a little more prominent. The recommend dishes were unbelievable, The ceviche very fresh could be a main entrée. The mussels with the saffron broth was a 10! If you dine here you must have the flourless chocolate tort. The service was it 10 as well.
Started with Andy at the bar. He was very entertaining and made awesome cocktails. We were 7 family members celebrating 2 big birthdays. Melissa took great care of us. Cannot say enough of how well she handled the night. We had a little of everything. Highlights were the oysters [amazing] ,the pea risotto [big hit] and the impressive pork chop. All the food was wonderful. Melissa took care of the birthdays with the flourless chocolate cake. And we loves the cereal milk ice cream. A good time was had by all. It was my wife's choice for her birthday. She was happy with her choice.
What a wonderful place!
Our server was great and our whole meal was paced very well. All the food and cocktails we ordered were inventive and tasty. We especially loved the chicken and all the desserts. The outdoor garden adds to the overall charm of the place. Please keep doing what you're doing - you do it so well!
The brunch is not provided by Homestead on the roof - it is the West Town Bakery menu, but you are sitting on the Homestead roof. This should be made clear on Open Table. The food was disappointing. The service was extremely slow; our waiter barely spoke to us and we had to flag down other people whenever we needed something. The host, on the other hand, was very friendly and helpful.
A wonderful experience all around
It was slightly rainy that evening and I loved that we got to sit on the roof deck during the rain. Ambiance was perfect. Our waiter, Cory, was lovely. Food was fast to the table but our drinks---one cocktail and a club soda came incredibly slowly---we were well into our starters when they arrived. My husband ordered a second drink with his entree---it arrived right before we asked for the checK. :( The waiter asked about food allergies and my husband said no milk, cream, sour cream, or yogurt but butter and cheese are fine. Waiter said no problem. He ordered the Paella... something in it must've had milk or the seafood was bad, because he was so sick by the time we got home and had stomach problems for two days. :( I would love to say we'll return because it was lovely otherwise. But, we won't.
We did a Sunday brunch. Really cute rooftop dining! Totally loved the atmosphere. Server was a little gruff. Food was pretty good.
Great rooftop location, perfect for a date or out with friends would definitely recommend it and go again. Fun drink menu, limited but decent wine list. Let me explain my "good" rating and not higher on the food. I have to compare it to other farm to table/seasonal places and by that yardstick there are some stellar places in town that set the bar so high, (thus getting an excellent rating on food) that this place rates a good.
Great outdoor rooftop vibe in an intimate setting. Excellent food to boot! Please check it out!
WONDERFUL CREATIVE FOOD. PERFECT SETTING IF YOU ENJOY EATING OUTSIDE.
WE LOVED OYSTERS, FOIE GRAS, CHARRED EGGPLANT, INNOVATIVE PAELLA, AND THE
ENORMOUS PORK CHOP.
All the nomz.
