Derived from the Chinese Pinyin word “huo lu”, meaning fire pit, HOLU is a modern Asian steakhouse featuring the world’s finest meat — including USDA Prime beef, dry aged in-house with Himalayan pink salt, as well as snow aged Japanese A5 Wagyu, Australian Wagyu, North American Wagyu and more. Complemented with the most sustainable seafood and freshest organic vegetables available, omakase style menus are prepared on a smokeless, ceramic charcoal grill. The bar highlights thoughtfully curated, progressive cocktails as well as select wine, spirits, sake and beer. HOLU is located in Chicago’s West Chinatown neighborhood. Reservations are accepted for parties up to six. Complimentary lot parking is available.

We had a wonderful experience! We got the classic package and added the tartare and crab cake. We definitely ordered too much food, but it was all wonderful, especially the tartare.

I have heard about this restaurant for a long time, so I decided to try it out with my friends tonight. There were only a few other tables dining in the restaurant. I was surprised that this restaurant does not offer a la carte menu. We were one man and three ladies, and any of the three set menus offered would have been too much food for us. Since we had no choice, we ended up ordering the "classic" which seemed to have the least number of dishes on the menu. But it was still too much to finish. We left the last two dishes and it was a complete waste. The ingredients were generally good. We only ordered two bottles of beer and a tea. The final bill was nearly $600. I think it is too expensive for Korean BBQ. Although it is good, it is not worth it. Especially limiting guests to ordering only set menus, which I think is unreasonable. It was an experience but I won’t come back again !

Wonderful food served by a warm, knowledgeable, efficient server. He engaged with our group, talking about shared experiences, explained the process and what each cut of meat was, and we never felt rushed.

The service was terrible, and it impacted our experience. We didn't seem to have a single waitress who was responsible for us, so instead had a rotating group of people come by who did not communicate to each other. We had the hostess come by and misidentify the oysters we had, the bartender come by with our drinks and not know which ones they were, and neither of the two other waitresses who came by infrequently ever introduced themselves or explained how the experience at Holu works, and they cook the food at your table so there is some explanation needed. The food WAS excellent, and the experience very cool. But again, the service let us down. I had to remind the waitress to put the last piece of meat on the grill after it was sitting for 20 minutes or so on our table. She also overcooked the lobster tail we decided to splurge on. We've only been this one time, and won't try again. But it's possible this was just a terrible night of service from the restaurant and not how it always is. But that's the night we got.

Our experience was similar to another’s on the same night 7/13/2024. Food was great but service was horrible. Not worth 700 plus dollars if the service sucks. Not bringing out ordered food and having the consistently ask for things. No attention to detail at all. Maybe they were understaffed that night who knows.

Absolutely wonderful experience! Absolutely worth the price ten times over! Leo was wonderful he perfectly cooked the meat. I was nervous not being much of a steak person but wanted the omakase experience for my partner and was blown away- everything was so good!
