Ham flights aren't something I've seen before and we were not let down, all very very good. The oyster selection was great and they were all very very tasty; I'd love to come back for the brunch specials. Cocktails were great, all the food was great (I could go into detail but just go try it for yourself). Service was great without being stuffy. One comment is that the restaurant was VERY warm and humid inside--I understand it's the Bay Area and climate control is not always priority (especially in older buildings) but it was uncomfortable in here and the restaurant was far less than half full.
$1 oysters were nice, didn't wait long for a table for 5 outside. Relatively quiet compared to most places on a Sunday at 3pm. Food took awhile to get to us. Salad was a bit simple for the price (as was all the food) not great, but not bad by any means.
WHERE DO I START? Pretty sure our server was drunk.
So I don't drink, but asked for a virgin mojito and she said smugly that they don't "doooo that," apparently referring to the fact they don't muddle, but this place prides themselves as being a craft cocktail bar so assuming they at least had mint somewhere behind the bar really wasn't all that farfetched. Apparently not (bizarre to me) but I could've sufficed with "We don't have mint, but I can offer you a lemon, ginger drink that's fabulous." If you claim to be a cocktail bar, the people that don't drink really love fancy options for them too just fyi. "Mocktails" as most places call it on the menu is super appreciated for those of us off the sauce. While I liked the drink she suggested, I had to ask 3 times for a second to arrive.
Had to ask for multiple things multiple times throughout the dinner. Charged us full price for everything, even though the oysters came last after five other courses and after three different requests. I'm assuming she didn't ask to comp anything because she didn't want her manager to come over to talk to us.
I don't ask for anything for free, we ordered everything we wanted and were prepared to pay for it all (as we did). I was a bartender/server for 10+ years not that long ago and tried to be compassionate given the girl was clearly having a bad night, but I have never in my life received such bad service and received such a disregard for acknowledgement of how terrible it actually was. I brought a dear friend here who was in from the East Coast and I was sad that our meal was ruined because of frustration around the food's delivery or lack thereof, and horrendous service.
I would come back because the food was amazing and the ambiance was lively and fun, but if I saw her walking up to me at the table, I would certainly request a different server immediately....
We made reservations here after reading online reviews. We were greeted warmly and seated quickly. Unfortunately there is a new menu and chef so there were no longer any foie gras dishes served. We had the steak tartare and the Wagyu burger. Both dishes were very good as were the French fries. Drinks were very flavorful . Hoping they will put at least one foie gras dish back on the menu soon. We would return here for dinner and drinks.
Hog and Rocks is a local place that features ham and oysters. We dropped in as we were going to the Roxie to see "Letters from Baghdad". It was early about 5:15 so we just walked in although we had a reservation. The outside tables were full as it was a nice afternoon. The inside was fairly empty and quiet - which we liked. We ordered the dollar-oyster special (available from 5:00pm-6:30pm and a great bargain), an order of deviled eggs, the four-ham flight and a fried chicken sandwich to share.
Oysters were very good quality - would be back just for those! The ham flight was served with homemade apricot jam and warm flatbread - also excellent. My grandmother had a smokehouse, so I love hams. Speck, serrano, prosciutto and a southern salt-cured ham! The chicken sandwich was excellent - brioche bun, good fried chicken breast, herb flavored aioli, homemade pickles, arugala. Deviled eggs were flavored with paprika and cayenne (I think) with a small breaded fried oyster on top of each egg half, small piece of bacon tucked into egg. Three half eggs for $9... fair price considering what you get.
Good service, interesting drinks, good food. Will definitely come back again. Nell had wanted to try them for a long time. Parking can be challenging - welcome to the Mission!
Our food and drinks were great, but the waitress forgot about us for a half hour after we ordered appetizers; We had waffled a bit as there were so many good choices when she initially came by, so she said she would come back. When she finally came over to take our dinner order, to our surprise, she asked if we would like a dessert menu. While I enjoyed the evening, the delay in service put a slight damper on our meal.
We came to Hog & Rocks for mid-afternoon food and drink. There was a $1 oyster special, so we had a dozen. They were wonderful. Even better was the hamburger, which was juicy and delicious! We also had their bloody mary, which is nice and spicy, and some sparkling wine. Bourbon enthusiasts would especially appreciate their cocktails.
