Although we had a reservation, we were sent downstairs to the bar area, which allowed the cigarette smoke to waft in to us. Our waitperson was wonderful, and my yellow jacket rolls were the BEST rolls I have ever had. We’ve had better miso soup and edamame, but I’m definitely returning for those rolls.
Unassuming from the outside, this is a hidden gem in the neighborhood. Quality food and great selection. I really wasn't sure what to expect, but I was very happy with the food and the people serving it.
Lava rolls are the best!!!!
At first I saw the location and place and had my doubts. But I was wrong. The food was flawless and the staff was super friendly. It’s a bit off the path if staying downtown but you can’t beat the price
We loved it. The sushi quality was excellent and presentation was beautiful. We really enjoyed it all, but would highly suggest the GFR, bubble bee, and garlic edamame (very spicy)
Great place. Great food. Great drinks! Chef Chris cooks amazingly well.
Awesome place with a lot of memories for my wife and I. Noise level was a little high but the sushi was delicious and the server made sure each plate we ordered made it to our table in a paced and appropriate manner. Will continue to go for years to come, even though they took away our “sexy corner” booth where my wife and I agreed to get married.
The best sushi in town. The service is amazing. Will be back again for sure.
its was a very busy Sunday reservation but we got seated quickly and our food was brought out steadily with the staff was busy but attentive. the food was great always a good sushi place
Had the 1904, yellow jacket, and two others.
Food was delicious!!
Service was lack luster.
There was a wait for the sushi but we will be back.
Overall experience was fair. The food was good, prices reasonable, drinks good. We had long durations between refills and orders while we waited for service. We also put in the special remarks that it was a birthday and expected at least acknowledgement for the birthday. None was given. Several times one of our guests went to the bar to order drinks because our server was too busy with other tables. Perhaps they were short staffed. The staff that helped us was friendly and apologetic, and again the food and atmosphere was good.
Had a great first visit here on Saturday evening. Three rolls was more than enough for the two of us!
I had a fantastic evening just sitting at the bar with my brother and eating the best sushi San Diego has to offer. It was absolutely fantastic. Staff was extremely friendly, knowledgeable and creative with the new streamlined menu.
Good first experience. Thank you! We will be back.
The food was surprisingly delicious, well above and beyond all expectations that I may have had. Rice and sushi well seasoned and built. Well done... service was a bit slow, considering the joint was almost empty at the time, but the personnel’s attention was a good balance.
I love the food here but I normally get it delivered. 4 stars because the food took longer dining in than it does to get it delivered. They only had a few parties at the time too. If your not in a rush or ordering to go I recommend it though. The 1904 and kobe beef are awesome, good hamachi too.
Thank you to Linda, Bobby and all the staff at The Hive!! You guys did an excellent job helping us celebrate our vow renewal. The food was tasty as always. The service was impeccable. You guys really made our night perfect and memorable.
This was some of the best sushi I’ve ever had. The salmon in olive oil and orange was unbelievable. I will go there whenever I visit San Diego
horrible service, would never recommend to anyone, rude servers and literally every single piece of food came out one by one regardless of who it belonged to so half the table was finished their meal and the other half got their food 45 minutes later as we all sat there
Amazing food. Amazing service. Loved it. Would definitely go back.
This is my favorite sushi place in San Diego although the service tends to be leisurely. We particularly enjoy coming here before the Tuesday Evening Live Jazz concerts at City College across the street.
They were BEYOND accommodating and so wonderful!! I couldn’t have asked for more. We will be back!
Cocktails were good and salmon was nice size but but service was poor and food was hit or miss. We also had dirty plates sent back but staff didn’t seem to feel bothered by that like it was not unusual.
sushi was absolutely fantastic. Highly recommend !!!
Our second time eating at Hive and everything was just as delicious as the first. Great service!!
Ok I am going to start by saying that the food was great but it for over shadowed by the poor service and disorganization. It took over 45 minutes for us to get our food. There were 3 tables being served and All orders were placed with the chef at the same time even though our table was sat and ordered first. So all food came sporadically and even though we ordered first we were not served first. Service and attention was real poor is why the low rating. Food was exceptional.
Korean mastery of the neighborhood Sushi spot devoid of good Japanese run spots.
Locally sourced sashimi is the best bet; hamachi.
Miso soup was hot but came after a reminder, vegetable selection was sparse. Many americana style rolls, tempura and hand rolls were passable.
Overall might want to head south to more Japanese style shores albeit all the way to Del Mar.
Tim is the best sushi chef!!!
I know the chef was an awesome menu item, great sashimi boat! Super service, great fish and creative dishes.
Our water glasses were crusty, our edamame had hair in it, they didn’t have one Pinot noir, even the one on the menu. They put the sauce we requested on the side all over the app, they only served fake crab (krab). When we brought all of this to their attention, they took one app off our bill and acted like we were crazy for being upset.
Will never go here again.
A great little find. Very friendly service shrimp tempura was great
Amazing experience!! Love the food
Eh. Food was ok, service was pretty much nonexistent.
Was in town to see the symphony and stopped by this sushi spot before the show. Was a really delightful place with an awesome happy hour. Great value and food!
There were open tables and was able to be seated right away but the service was so slow. After given water it took about 10-15 min to order appetizers and drinks. Then took another 15 min to get them. Waited about 30 min later to get my actual order in. Maybe they were short staffed that day but it was so hard to flag your server down. Server was very polite which was nice, but the amount of time to wait seemed unnecessary. As for the food, it was very over priced for the quality. You could go to sushi deli for a fraction of the cost and it taste so much better. At sushi deli they also serve you a lot faster even if you have to wait a longer time for a table, because they all Hustle. At hive they seem to just take their time and go to you when it is convenient.
Horrible restaurant. We went in and were seated but no one brought menus. We finally had to make eye contact with the girl that seated us who finally brought over menus. We ordered and it took about 45 minutes before we got our first sushi roll. I asked about the long wait and the girl was so rude saying that "they were just really busy." Every time we asked for something it was like it was an inconvenience. We had ordered 4 sushi rolls and they all came out at different times. The sushi was so mediocre and it was expensive for what it was. We had to ask another server for our bill because our waitress never came back. We left so disappointed with our choice for sushi. Will never be back. Please save your time and money and go to another place. There are so many good sushi restaurants we are so disappointed we chose this one.
Off the beaten path from busy gaslamp area. Made reservation on Friday for 630 pm and were the only people in the back. Front bar area had a few people.
Waiter gave us good recommendations for sashimi and a roll. Everything was tasty! Fresh fish .
Nice to be able to have a conversation in a restaurant and not feel like you have to yell at the person sitting across from you.
Ambiance can use some work. It was hot and dingy inside.
We were quickly seated and the only ones in the restaurant. We were greatly quickly by one waitress and then after a few minutes greeted by another. We had high hopes based on the yelp reviews we read. Shortly after our arrival we ordered a round of drinks and it took quite a while to get back to our table. About that time a loud and super obnoxious group of drunk folks finishing up a sushi making class were seated right by us and were very very noisy. This table was swarming with waitresses but we could barely get water and silverware. We placed our order and half of our food came out pretty quick but we never got the other half of our order. We asked the waitress 3 times about the rest of the food and she assured us it was on the way. On the fourth time she finally stated that the order was never placed. We were there about 1.5 hours and never got a second drink, ran out of water and never got the rest of the food. The waitress apologized and said "don't worry I will take care of you on the bill"...our bill arrived and nothing was done to "take care of us". The waitress was new but very clear was also untrained. The food was great and would highly suggest better training so that this type of experience does not effect future business. Thanks again!
The staff needs to be trained to handle regular guests while attending to larger parties. Had to wait almost 30 minutes for my final roll to arrive after the prior portion of my order had been served and eaten. Food was otherwise enjoyable with a comfortable atmosphere.
