About Hitching Post II
Here, on the Central Coast of California, BBQ has always meant grilling over an open fire of red oak, a style of cooking that is native to our area and goes back to the days of the Spanish Rancheros. By combining the old and the new, we have created an exciting cuisine with outstanding steaks, ribs and chicken, along with fresh fish and seafood and vegetarian options. We also create our own (world class) wines for sale in the restaurant and to the public. Hartley Ostini Hitching Post Wines have garnered an excellent reputation. Try them here or purchase on our website for your enjoyment at home.

Hitching Post II Ratings and Reviews
BEST. STEAK. EVER. And I have had some great steaks: Morton's, Mastro's, Ocean Prime, Michael Mina's, etc., but this one was at the top. I had the New York, my friend had the Ribeye, wife had the Rack of Lamb and her buddy had the Prawns. All were cooked and served perfectly, Bonus - the fries are to die for and the bread pudding in sinful. YUM!
Got into Buellton a little earlier than planned, so we started with the Pinot Noir tasting at the bar. Wine was fine but did not compare to what we enjoyed in Paso Robles earlier in the day. Three steaks for the four of us - a petite filet, ribeye, and rib chop (split) - all cooked as ordered. I was pleasantly surprised by the the suggestion to use salsa as steak sauce... nice! Ambiance was as advertised on Yelp and Open Table. Saw the cast pictures from Sideways. Everything was okay, probably will not return.
Cannot beat this restaurant for the steaks! Always cooked just the way you order. The flat iron is extra special and the roasted garlic starter is fantastic. The only negative is the noise. It is very loud to the point of making conversation difficult. Nevertheless, this place is a find, especially if you are a carnivore!
SO we had the "table with the view." This was both good and bad. We could see the incredible comradery at the restaurant. They're doing something right! There was not even a bit of stress behind that window. The food was great. The bad? We could see every bit of our food being soaked in A LOT of butter. This is not in any shape of the imagination a healthy meal. But delicious! Genevieve was fantastic. Made our meal even better.
Most tender filet mignon we've ever had. Fork-tender and melts in your mouth.
Reservation was for 8pm, confirmed by opentable's email. Restaurant had us down at 8:15 and we weren't even seated then. Service was only ok and the restaurant is very loud on a Saturday night. Amazing food, though.
Great service and quaint atmosphere. It was very easy for our party of 8 to hear each other which made for a nice dinner. Unfortunately we didn't think the food was off the charts as we had expected. The ones who ordered flat iron steak were fairly pleased. There were several of us who ordered the filet and agreed we wouldn't order it again. It just wasn't good and for the price we expected better.
Stopped by for a grilled artichoke and some Pinot Noir and wound up staying for dinner. Some of the best wine in the area, and, without the attitude or prices. Great steak, oak grilled is a nice treat for those of us used to cedar smoke. Too full for desert.
My husband and I have lived in Buellton for more than 30 years. We have not been to the Hitching Post for 15 years, since we had a "bad" experience the last time. Waitress was efficient but unfriendly and actually a bit rude. That left us not wanting to return.
We were pleasantly surprised that we had good service, a friendly and competent waitress and the usual outstanding food.
I wrote a review yesterday, but sent it someplace I think. The Hitching Post has been our families Celebration place for decades. We went for our anniversary . I was so disappointed.
It almost needed a under new management sign.
The food was average.
Far less than the food I expect from Hitching Post.
I am so sad.
Great steakhouse in Buellton California Santa Rita Hills wine country. Share the perfectly cooked super sized rib eye. And of course paired with their own label Pinot Noir Julia. Ask to sit in the room with the window into the kitchen. A fun unpretentious dining experience.
Have wanted to try Hitching Post II since Sideways but we are never in Buellton at dinner time and they aren’t open for lunch. We weren’t disappointed. The steak was excellent and my husband loved the duck. We tried the bbq mushrooms and they were great with a wonderful sauce. Good wine too. And great ambience just like the movie.
