About Hitching Post II
Here, on the Central Coast of California, BBQ has always meant grilling over an open fire of red oak, a style of cooking that is native to our area and goes back to the days of the Spanish Rancheros. By combining the old and the new, we have created an exciting cuisine with outstanding steaks, ribs and chicken, along with fresh fish and seafood and vegetarian options. We also create our own (world class) wines for sale in the restaurant and to the public. Hartley Ostini Hitching Post Wines have garnered an excellent reputation. Try them here or purchase on our website for your enjoyment at home.

Hitching Post II Ratings and Reviews
We were able to sit promptly with our reservation and our server, Robin, was great. The swordfish and the steak were also good. Would definitely come here again. Also making a reservation with open table definitely saved us time as it seemed there was a wait for those who came without a reservation.
Love the Hitching Post II! If you want the old school steakhouse experience this is the place! Excellent steaks, salad, wine, vegetable tray, mini shrimp cocktail, and garlic bread with salsa. Best steak dinner experience we have had since the last time we were here. Simply preapared delicious food. Our server Anna and the whole staff were attentive and engaging. Thank you HP II!!!
My husband and I always plan a visit to Hitching Post and the visits have been great. This past visit was a bit disappointing, perhaps due to the Thanksgiving weekend and they were just bombarded with too many bookings. We waited 45 minutes after our salad plates were picked up before we saw our steak plates. The appetite was gone by then. Great steaks its just unfortunate with the wait.
Tried and true. We have been eating here for years and have never been disappointed. This is nothing fancy to look at, but what comes off the pit grill is delicious. There is something for everyone. Service is top notch. With a familiar menu and order of courses, the staff is always on top of things like offering to pour more wine, refilling water, clearing dishes, asking if everything is to your liking. When ever we are in the Buellton area, we make a reservation for dinner here. Some day we'd like to try lunch and one of their famous burgers.
The first time I went to the Hitching Post was the one in Casmalia when I was a preschooler over 40 years ago. I started bringing my husband and sister to Buellton's HP2 last year. If you like a good Santa Maria styled BBQ steak, you've found your spot. The steaks are cooked over a traditional Santa Maria BBQer with wood being thrown underneath it at intervals. As you sit down, you are presented with a basket with various types of crackers, a dish of individually wrapped butters, an old school relish dish with carrots, celery, green onion, pepperonchini, radishes. (See you get some veggies!) My sister and I both got rib eyes while my husband got a NY strip. For starters we got the roasted garlic as an extra but it came with a salad and a shrimp cocktail. We all three asked for our steaks medium rare. We also all got baked potatoes - they come with sour cream and chives on the side. My husband's steak was spot on medium rare. My sister and I had our rib eyes well done on the edges and medium to medium rare in the middle. Still very tasty. We got desserts - my sister got a quite moist in a good way chocolate cake, my husband had the cheese plate which was very nice and I had the cheesecake which was light and not obsessively sweet. Hurrah! Coming on a very, very busy post Thanksgiving dinner may have been ambition because they were slammed. I may have to come back en famille when it's not a crazy night. It's still a fun experience and the food is pretty awesome if you like yourself some dead cow.
BEST. STEAK. EVER. And I have had some great steaks: Morton's, Mastro's, Ocean Prime, Michael Mina's, etc., but this one was at the top. I had the New York, my friend had the Ribeye, wife had the Rack of Lamb and her buddy had the Prawns. All were cooked and served perfectly, Bonus - the fries are to die for and the bread pudding in sinful. YUM!
Got into Buellton a little earlier than planned, so we started with the Pinot Noir tasting at the bar. Wine was fine but did not compare to what we enjoyed in Paso Robles earlier in the day. Three steaks for the four of us - a petite filet, ribeye, and rib chop (split) - all cooked as ordered. I was pleasantly surprised by the the suggestion to use salsa as steak sauce... nice! Ambiance was as advertised on Yelp and Open Table. Saw the cast pictures from Sideways. Everything was okay, probably will not return.
one of the best steaks I've every had. We split the bone-in prime rib angus cut. Extra charge of $6 so that spouse could also have a potato and salad. Great value. Only complaint is lettuce was wilted and a bit warm on the salad
Cannot beat this restaurant for the steaks! Always cooked just the way you order. The flat iron is extra special and the roasted garlic starter is fantastic. The only negative is the noise. It is very loud to the point of making conversation difficult. Nevertheless, this place is a find, especially if you are a carnivore!
SO we had the "table with the view." This was both good and bad. We could see the incredible comradery at the restaurant. They're doing something right! There was not even a bit of stress behind that window. The food was great. The bad? We could see every bit of our food being soaked in A LOT of butter. This is not in any shape of the imagination a healthy meal. But delicious! Genevieve was fantastic. Made our meal even better.
Most tender filet mignon we've ever had. Fork-tender and melts in your mouth.
Reservation was for 8pm, confirmed by opentable's email. Restaurant had us down at 8:15 and we weren't even seated then. Service was only ok and the restaurant is very loud on a Saturday night. Amazing food, though.
Great service and quaint atmosphere. It was very easy for our party of 8 to hear each other which made for a nice dinner. Unfortunately we didn't think the food was off the charts as we had expected. The ones who ordered flat iron steak were fairly pleased. There were several of us who ordered the filet and agreed we wouldn't order it again. It just wasn't good and for the price we expected better.
Stopped by for a grilled artichoke and some Pinot Noir and wound up staying for dinner. Some of the best wine in the area, and, without the attitude or prices. Great steak, oak grilled is a nice treat for those of us used to cedar smoke. Too full for desert.
