Sam Spade's Lamb Chops
Served with baked potato and sliced tomatoes [Sam Spade went to John's Grill, asked the waiter to hurry his order of chops, baked potato, sliced tomatoes...and was smoking a cigarette with his coffee when..." -The Maltese Falcon]
Friendly staff and pleasant service. Food was great quality.
Fantastic food & environment! Old school vibe. Dragos was a great server!
We were greeted at the door by the host which was nice. The waiter was also nice as well very professional. The food on the other hand was very bland no flavor at all. Not even a bit of salt and pepper.
It’s a rent place for a few drinks but dinner it’s a no go
Classic but casual atmosphere makes for a perfect "Old San Francisco" experience. You can feel the history in this place and the food and cocktails are fantastic. Service is great and the prices, while not cheap, are very reasonable given the quality. The highlights for us were the clam chowder, Manhattan cocktails and sourdough bread. Our steak and seafood dishes were also excellent.
Outstanding food and service
I thought this would be a romantic meal at a nice restaurant. Very loud and crowded. People in shorts and t shirts. Food was okay but not worth the price. Good service.
Service, ambience and food quality were all top notch. Best meal we’ve had in San Francisco and better service and food than 2 of the top national steakhouse chains we’ve eaten in recently.
As usually it was amazing !!!
Food was amazing! Loved the ambience. Can’t wait to go back!
Very good food at a fair price, with EXCELLENT service by our server Drakosh. We sat upstairs & it was quiet & enjoyable. John's is an American classic!
Great job helping us celebrate my moms birthday! Thanks
After being away from the San Francisco restaurant scene during the pandemic, it is good to see old favorites reopen. The upstairs has been renovated and is now called the Maltese Falcon Room. John still has his great menu, including the Sam Spade lamb chops, which I had and they were excellent and generous.
Great service, delicious food & drinks! Lovely ambiance!
Like visiting an old friend. Lovely dinner, perfect cosmo, delicious wine by the glass and coffee and port.
Service was excellent and the food delicious. All three in our group enjoyed their dinner and would definitely return. The servers wore masks. They have built an outdoor seating area for those that would prefer to sit outside. I would highly recommend.
Fun historic spot for a martini and a steak!
Don't miss "The Bird!"
It was pretty busy, but we were seated right away. Service was great. Surf and Turf was excellent. Clam chowder was very good as well. We would definitely come back.
We thoroughly enjoyed a mid-afternoon meal at John's Grill. The food was very, very good. Our server took very good care of us and the afternoon ambiance was perfect. We will be back. It was all perfect! Thank you!
We were seated outdoor and the service was great. :)
I love the atmosphere of John’s. I can picture Dashiel and Lillian cuddling in a corner booth, sipping snifters of brandy after dinner.
We celebrated our 49th anniversary at John’s Grill where they gave us a quiet booth in the corner near the bar. They even treated us to Prosecco & a yummy dessert! And the food was amazing! It was a perfect place to celebrate us!
Cool vibe short staffed still able to provide acceptable service. Food was great
Outstanding service and food!!! Enjoyable experience.
2nd time going to John's in as many weeks, and it was better than the 1st time. Food is amazing, and the service is top notch. one of the best places I have ever eaten in my life.
Great place to plan an extravagant dinner party or just take in a great lunch while shopping the downtown stores.
Excellent food and great service with reasonable prices and a variety of American style dishes.
Excellent food, service, ambience!
Great atmosphere and service.
Service and food were incredible. We had the filet mignon.
The staff was incredible and the food was outstanding! 11 out of 10 experience
Busy Saturday night and a little chaotic. Seated maybe 15 minutes late which is fine, but the table the two of us received was so cramped it was almost impossible to move or relax. I felt like I was in a straight jacket perhaps awaiting an interrogation. Service was very slow which is understandable as most restaurants are short staffed post Covid. Servers were extremely warm and friendly.
Food was decent. House salad was pretty tasty topped with mediocre limp shrimp. Lamb chops were beautiful looking and plentiful, although somewhat lacking in flavor.
It's a hard time for restaurants and I appreciated the hard working staff... Will give it another try on a week night when things hopefully settle down.
Love John's. The staff are all friendly and professional. The food is consistent. It feels like a bit of old San Francisco.
Great experience, the service is outstanding. I highly recommend!
The service was excellent! The meal and the dessert were both excellent! Using the website to make a reservation was very easy. I will definitely eat at John's on my next visit to SF.
one of my SF favs
Exquisite service and the best fish and chips of the year at this wood-paneled 100+-year-old eatery a block from Macys San Francisco. Atmosphere of the 1940s with a replica of the Maltese Falcon (a scene from the Bogart film was made here), and a menu out of the 1950s. The chef knows what he's doing and he does it well.
Great classic food. Wait staff very professional. Will return
Happy that John’s Grill has survived the lockdown! Was saddened to see that many SF landmark restaurants have closed indefinitely. We celebrated our fifth wedding anniversary in the city & enjoyed the food, ambiance & service at John’s Grill.
Everything was great, and it was so nice to be out again.
