Sam Spade's Lamb Chops
Served with baked potato and sliced tomatoes [Sam Spade went to John's Grill, asked the waiter to hurry his order of chops, baked potato, sliced tomatoes...and was smoking a cigarette with his coffee when..." -The Maltese Falcon]

Our waiter Bret was fantastic! He was very personable and gave us just the right amount of attention.
Great place! The clam chowder and shrimp cocktail were as good as they good. So were the "Humphrey Bogart" lamb chops. I highly recommend John's Grill for anyone visiting SF!
John's Grill...if You Know, You Know...
Every facet is superb; Ambiance, Service...stellar...food, impeccable.
Appetizers, Entrees...it's the simplicity that makes the meal. Nothing mired in a heavy sauce to mask a subpar dish; crisp, clean...One of the Best the City has to offer.
Great food, as always. One of our favorite restaurants when we are in town.
Booked reservation 30 min to arrival and was immediately seated. The cocktails were delivered immediately after ordering, lemon drop was heavy on the Triple Sec, but quickly corrected. Fisherman’s Pasta was average, it offered the perfect amount of seafood, noodles slightly over cooked. The Beef Medallions were cooked medium rare (just how I like it). We tried the pecan with a scoop of vanilla ice cream and the pie was served warm with a side of berries, it was excellent. The staff was attentive and overall a great experience and we will return after the next ball game. Would certainly recommend!!
We went for the SF Restaurant Week lunch special. The clam chowder was awesome and the fish and chips hit the spot! Great lunch!
We ate inside (we’re vaccinated) in the corner booth just past the bar. It was quiet and very nice. The service and food were both great. We split the Jack LaLane salad and then he had a burger and I had the lamb chops.
Went to John’s Grill after my vaccine and to celebrate my birthday. What an amazing experience! I love this place and they pulled out all the stops for my birthday: dessert and lemoncello on the house. I’ll be back again, like I always do! Seafood pasta was delicious!!
A classic, old world traditional SF restaurant. Lamb chops are recommended!
Best Petrale Sole ever! Very thick cut. New York steak was very good. Excellent skinny Margarita. Chocolate Mouse Torte was delicious.
This was the seventh time I’ve been to John’s in the last two years and, as ever, it was awesome.
Service was amazing, food so high in quality. We had table 21, by far the best in the restaurant. The manager came over to check on us and sent over a free desert.
What struck me most is that I asked for a bottle recommendation and when I do this they usually recommend the most expensive but no he recommended the 4th least expensive cab.
Our service was phenomenal! We really enjoyed the desserts the most ! Great traditional restaurant with comfortable vibe. We loved all the photos on the walls with the history of the restaurant.
Waitress was fantastic and provided great service. Food was great, my fish and chips, i think the oil was a bit old, but still very good. It was my mother's birthday and when the waitress brought her a flan with a candle it made a huge impact. Thank you and i will definitely come back
Food and drinks exceptional as usual. Wait staff, on point. May continued success and further prosperity be in your near future
had lunch inside- ordered the broiled salmon and it was delicious!
Food and booze have always been great at this landmark. Went for the first time since pandemic began. John's had an amazing setup outside. It was like your own private booth. Staff was outstanding. The food is still great and perfect temp, even coming all the way outside. Excellent job making the best of our current situation.
Fantastic food and the price was better than expected. Definitely will be coming back next time I’m in the city
It was a very memorable evening. Was our anniversary and every staff person made it special. The service was awesome, not rushed, and at our own pace. Food was very good, had Halibut and Beef Medallion special. Glad they were able to continue through this pandemic.
Great food but the ambiance outside was meh considering we ate outdoors off the sidewalk.
Very very nice outdoor seating. Waiter was so so. In the past I’ve always ordered the fried prawns. They have always one with a veg and mashed potatoes. Only veg offered but asked for potatoes instead. Usually the mashed potatoes are so so creamy and delicious. But this time....dry and bland. Disappointed!
Phenomenal all the way around not a single complaint about the restaurant or staff but be aware if you choose to sit outside be prepared to be approached a few times by some homeless begging for cash other then that such an amazing meal!
Lovely experience. Great service, great food, relaxed atmosphere
Fab as usual. Beef Medallions were SO tender!
We enjoyed our visit. The food was good, but not outstanding. My halibut was rubbery and bland.
Service was excellent. Ambiance very fun. Thank you
The place felt comfortable and clean. The tables were spaced apart. For my daughter’s birthday they gave her a flan dessert which was generous and delicious! We also celebrated HS decisions. It felt quite celebratory!
Good steaks and martinis the Botha outside are nice safe isolation zones.
Food was delicious! Lamb was amazing. Outdoor dining experience was great. Excited to go back and eat indoors to experience the period style.
Awesome restaurant. Friend crew. Bartender made the best Le he martini ever.
1st indoor dining experience since last October due to the pandemic. Felt well taken care of from both a health and dining standpoint. New York steak and lamb chops were delicious and cooked perfectly. Lots of interesting memorabilia to look at on the walls.
Food was delicious - loved the historical vibe !
Fantastic! This was our first indoor dining in over a hear and it couldn't have been better. The staff was gloved and masked, tables were over 6 feet apart and we felt safe and very well taken care of. So glad to see an historic S.F. restaurant back. Thank you.
Incredible restaurant!! We will definitely be back. Hidden jem with incredible food and drinks. Highly recommend.
Nothing great, it was food...not at all what I expected and had when there several years ago. Would not pay to return for a meal.
The food was excellent. My husband had the New York steak with a baked potato and veggies and he loved it. I had the Jack LaLanne salad that had crab, bay shrimp, avocado, tomatoes and it was delicious. They gave us a welcome back dessert which was Flan. It was so yummy. Our server was very friendly and it was pleasure to talk with her. We had reservations at 11:45 a.m. on Sunday and we were the only people in the restaurant but by the time we left. The ambience was wonderful. We love the old style restaurants.
The food was amazing! The clam chowder was to die for. Definitely will be back!
Outstanding place and excellent food, would recommend for any occaission
Great food, great service, nice outdoor heated seating
