Hiro 88 West Maple Ratings and Reviews
We eat at Hiro 88 regularly. The food is always very good and so is the atmosphere. Our last several times the service has been exceptionally slow and almost to the point to where we may not want to go back. We get our water immediately and then from there it has been a long wait to order any beverage so when they do come we order our food right away knowing of the delay. Then we wait a long time for the food. We did notice our waitress went back and fixed drinks also. The people are very polite and nice everything is just slow. But we have gone back because we do enjoy the food.
Love the food and atmosphere here. The sushi is always fresh and they have my favorite sea bass recipe in town with a savory crispy searing on the outside. Also the sea weed salad is incredible. The prices seem a little high at time but it seems like they also always use quality ingredients so that is likely why which is preferred to me.
Normally, I've been a huge fan of Hiro, though our lack of service really weighed into the review of this last visit. Our server in the dining room was also the bartender. Not unusual, when there were other servers for the dining room that weren't busy, it seemed odd. When he came to take our drink order, we said, not just yet and ordered water as we were waiting on a friend to join. When our friend joined, he came back to the table, took the drink menu and took it to the hostess stand, not asking any of us if we wanted something else to drink. Thankfully we all remembered what we wanted! We had to signal him to place our order, and when our sushi portion was ready, we could visibly see it sitting on the sushi counter for 5+ minutes as he was nowhere to be found. He also took more time interacting with his customers at the bar and socializing with coworkers than spending time with us or even checking on us. Because our sushi sat so long, we barely had time to finish it before our entrees were there. Thankfully we ordered an appetizer as again, it took a significant amount of time for our server to come back to the table to take our order. Granted, Hiro isn't usually a place you rush, and we didn't feel we were trying to, but were just hungry as our reservation was at 7:00pm. Additionally, the requested table from Open Table (low top) wasn't observed. We'll try it again as the quality of the food was as good as always, but due to the service, it likely won't be top of the list.
Our server was so kind and attentive. The food was full of flavor and there were a wide variety of menu options. You had your choice of fresh sushi, noodles, rice, and every protein you could want. I enjoyed their craft cocktail list and they were well done. I really enjoyed my meal and would go back again in a heartbeat.
This was my first time here - had a group of 6 adults and one 2 year old. The service was excellent, as well as the food, and prices were reasonable for both food and drinks. We all had sushi so cannot comment on the Chinese entrees. The free slice of chocolate cake for my daughter's birthday was the best we've ever had. The only thing we thought was odd was that if you make reservations (which we did), you don't get Happy Hour prices. Only the "walk-ins" get Happy Hour prices. I hope they change that rule. I thought a nice thing about it is that if you don't like sushi, they offer Chinese and other entrees so everyone can find something they like. Will definitely visit again!
