The food was good. The service is horrible. We made this reservation a week in advance, I confirmed we would be at the restaurant. When we arrived someone cleared our reservation as we had already been seated. Thankfully the restaurant was empty and getting a table wasn't problem. We were seated by our waiter who put water glasses on the table and provided us menus. All is well, we were all chatting and discussing what we were going to order. We see the barback walk by with about 10 water carafes to fill up their station, he looked at us and kept on walking. Thought maybe he was going to grab one and come over, he didn't. 10 mins later the waiter comes back and I asked if we were ready, I said yes, but could we get some water. He looked back and shook his head, like wtf. He promptly took our order and we had our salads and appetizer within 10 mins. All is well here. Food comes out in a reasonable time frame, it's tasty. We all enjoyed. But following up with the table was non-existent. I had to catch the waiters eye after he got up from doing his side work to ask him for more water. He went to get the water in the meantime the bar back was clearing our tables. It was obvious that he had been drinking and was severally intoxicated. Which explains why he not interested in bringing water or acknowledging us at all. I would order take-out and skip this place for their service. Not sure if it was an off night, but because of this experience I would not go a second time. We booked this reservation to celebrate my mother's birthday.
Service and food nothing to brag about. Way way overpriced for food quality and taste. Food came out warm , not hot at all. I’m sure sat around before waiter delivery. Service very average. Better places for the $$
First class service, delicious food and reasonable prices.
It was our first visit to this restaurant (we went for lunch), and our waiter was very helpful answering questions about the menu. The food was very pretty the way it was prepared, and everyone loved their selections. We added an order of garlic bread after the food was delivered and it came out promptly. The bus boy was also attentive at clearing plates, doing drink refills and keeping the table clean. Three of the 7 of us in our party had February birthdays, so the waiter brought us a dessert of our choice and comped it, which was very nice. We will definitely be back and we look forward to trying other items on the menu.
The menu has a nice variety of starters, salads, and entrees on the menu. The cost is $$$. The wait staff was very friendly and the atmosphere was relaxed. We liked that we could carry on a conversation without shouting or speaking loudly. We'll be sure to visit again!
Really delicious food! Only one issue: kitchen left the Bleu cheese on the burger that we specifically asked to omit.
We were looking for a meal before a show at the Music Center as were others. My wife wanted to the short rib, but they were out. Too bad as her second choice, the monk fish was only average. I had Mary's chicken which was ok, but also just average on the flavor spectrum.
Some coworkers and I decided to try this place out for happy hour. Food was really good, as were the cocktails. Good selection of happy hour wines and beers. Service was friendly and attentive. Happy hour pricing was good for DTLA. We'll definitely be back again.
It was for the first time to visit this restaurant.
All dishes were delicious. My clients were satisfied with the foods. We could not see the menu well because the light was a little dark.
But I like this restaurant and will come again.
Thank you very much.
Food was terrible!!! Chicken looked totally unappetizing and tasted the same. We eat out a lot -3 to 4 times a week. So loud and noisy -happy hour going on at same time. Ate there because it was convenient to Disney Hall and was looking for a new place to try. The waitress was great though -really nice!
Great dinner spot. Very Central, nice atmosphere and amazing food.
The food was tasty, but the service was terrible. They seemed to be short on waiters, and we kept having to call over the hostess who did her best to get us served.
Went before show at the Disney Music Hall. The hostess/waitress was so nice and friendly! I had a chopped salad that was fresh and tasty, and the perfect amount. Husband had the Hill Street burger and it was amazIng. He loves his burgers medium rare, and they nailed it. French fries were very good but could have been hotter. Very generous pours on the wines by the class. With our subscriptions at the Music Center and Disney Music Hall, this will definitely become a regular stop.
Took a relative visiting LA for the first time before a performance at Disney Hall. A wonderful find, especially since it's so close to DH! Loved the atmosphere, though I suspect it was unusually quiet because it was a Thursday evening (Halloween, to boot). Food was excellent. The only reason I didn't rate it higher was because I really wanted some straight-up sourdough bread to go with the rib eye and though they said they could oblige, they brought out toasted slices! I'll definitely go again....curious to experience it on a more active evening.
Great service, delicious food. We were there early so not at all crowded.
I have already recommended it to friends.
The French dip was amazing
The Restaurant was CLOSED! Not cool that we weren’t notified.
Theresa, We sincerely apologize for the inconvenience we caused you (and likely a few others) on Labor Day. We closed for the Federal Holiday, as did many other businesses - however, we overlooked our responsibility toward our OpenTable guests by failing to close our reservation book for the day. We hope that you choose to visit us again in the future. We would like another chance you make your day a better one. Again, we're sorry we let you down. Best, Hill Street.
Great service, friendly when I was late for my reservation. We loved the food and drinks. A must!
The server was so pleasant, helpful, and prompt. The garlic bread was good. I had the veggie patty Hill Street Burger and really enjoyed it. We chose this place for its proximity to the Disney Concert Hall, and we headed to the concert following dinner.
We walked to the restaurant after parking at the concert hall. I don't recommend that walk. Steep hill, inconsistent sidewalk, and construction. Note that we are in our 60's and do fine walking distances such as this, but it was uncomfortable. We took Uber back up the hill.
The architecture and design of the restaurant was eclectic with a nice blend of the old and new. I liked the big windows, natural light, and views of the city. It was easy to have a conversation with our friend, since the noise level was minimal. A very comfortable time with tasty food and a classy yet relaxed ambiance. I want to try the 7-hour Bolognese next time.
I took another pass at Hill Street and found my second experience as delightful as the first! I arrived at the beginning of Happy Hour, and the place was again very mellow. The garage-style windows were open this time, which makes the atmosphere indeed relaxed, so I sat at a high-top with an $8 Old Fashioned and a plate of the Hill's delicious fries, and I watched the world go by. The music here - a blend of current hits, old classics, and obscure grooves - creates a cool atmosphere. The Disney Concert Hall, in the distance, is a ten-minute walk up the hill. A high-rise is being built in front of it, which obscures the great view, albeit with a premonition of LA's tall future.
Also I'm pretty sure I watched as Jason Segel turned into the 2nd Street Tunnel, in a smooth-looking candy-apple-colored ride.
I wasn't hungry enough for a full meal, but I'm still eyeing these burgers. I'm on the prowl for a good beef burger in plant-happy DTLA, so I'm certain I'll be trying this one soon enough.
When here before going to a concert. The service was prompt and friendly. The food was amazing. I love the open windows in the high ceilings. I will definitely be back. We had a great experience.
We had a great meal before a play at the Music Center. The sangria and mezcal cocktail were just right. We had the pasta bolognese, cacio and pepe pasta and green been almondine. Everything was delicious. We had the cobbler for dessert and it was dry with something like dry cornflakes on top. I wouldn’t order that again. The service was excellent.
We happened to be seated next to six super loud and super drunk folks enjoying happy hour at a high top table. If they hadn’t have been there, the dining experience would have been much quieter. At one point two of the very drunk guys came table to table asking everyone when their birth month was. This was just random bad timing. We will definitely come again.
My husband and I had 5:30 pm reservations before our show at The Ahmanson that started at 8 pm in celebration of our 17 year wedding anniversary on Sat., Aug. 10, 2019. We parked at the Music Center for $9.00 and walked the two blocks down the hill to the restaurant. Jessica was the host and our waitress. She is GREAT! We shared the Hill Street Burger with the fries. The burger was DELICIOUS and so moist and the fries were great too with some Ranch Dressing. I enjoyed a glass of Angeline Chardonnay (that Jessica suggested) and my husband got the Old Fashioned. We took our time and got out of there for $50.00 (generous tip included) and walked back up the BIG hill to the Theatre to see our show The Play That Goes Wrong by 7:15 pm. Gave us enough time to stop and take pictures in front of the Walt Disney Concert Hall and use the restroom in the Ahmanson. Would definitely go there again.
Very tasty food, good friendly service, fair price, especially on wine list. Great for pre-theater. Only small complaint, we were seated next to the bar during happy hour, and it was a bit noisy.
Amazing food with great variety, satisfactory service, but the restaurant was probably 80 degrees when I ate there around 7pm, my family and I were literally sweating so I can’t do 5 stars.
I came after the lunch rush so the place was quiet. What a find! Located in a secondary venue of the Kawada Hotel, the soaring ceilings let in a lot of natural light and my server tells me that when they can open their pair of wall-sized garage windows the place is really relaxed. Today everything was closed tight to keep the air conditioning in, which was a blessing. The music and environment is tidy. My server was professional and clean, and recommended the burgers, chicken sandwiches, and salads, but I settled for Hill Street's French Dip. My goodness. Shaved prime rib cooked to medium and layered between halves of a soft, absorbent bolillo roll - which has been kissed with house-made jalapeno ranch dressing - is presented with a thick horseradish cream on the side and a perfect portion of onion au jus. Hill Street certainly didn't invent the LA Classic but it's brought in a serious contender!
I'll be back for Happy Hour, which offers some of their menu items at a discount and standard-but-decent drink specials. I had a great view of the Walt Disney Concert Hall at the top of Grand Street, too, which means this place isn't a bad choice for pre-theater dinner - if you don't mind the walk, of course.
Looking forward to trying the burger!
Service was on the slower side but we arrived right at the end of Happy Hour. Food was great. Would definitely go again when I'm not in a rush.
Watched multiple tables walk out. Waiting 45 minutes for one meal got tho other three meals came an hour and a half later. We stayed cause the waitress was so nice and apologetic. But at some point it was such a disaster it was funny. I don’t think the owner/manager has any experience. If they do it was hard to see.
his was our first time here. We had a reservation party of 10. We were all seated by 5:50 pm. We were there for a pre show dinner with friends. That meant we had 1 hour 50 min to eat no problem right?
Service was slow to begin with, then got slower.
Service was -2 stars if the app allowed it along the entire 2 hours we were there
Drinks arrived in fits and starts.
Appetizer (garlic bread and chips quac/queso. We’re ok, but the server didn’t suggest we order 2 each for the table and they took 30 min to come out of the kitchen. Since we didn’t have time to order another of each we didn’t
Dinner order was taken at the shortly after drinks arrived. It took FOREVER for everyone to actually get their drink. The server/expediter had no idea where the drinks were supposed to go they came one or two at a time, so every time they came to the table it required a full conversation stop, while we figured it out. Then we waited and waited and waited. Did get in a second drink order, same poor service.
And we waited some more. Finally after more than an hour the first few entrees came out. 15 min later most of the rest, finally at 15 min prior to our departure time, the last 2 arrived. The person sitting next to me had the same order as myself, so I gave him half my sandwich so he would start. After most people had finished eating a couple of the missing salads started showing up.
Most of the food was meh. We joked they maybe didn’t have a kitchen and were ordering off grub hub
When the check arrived (we asked for it after the last entree arrived because we were now running out of time) we were told that added a 20% gratuity. While I usually tip a bit more than that, this service was so so bad I may have reduced it.
This may be an ok place for parties of 2, they were in no way prepared to handle a group.
Great service; great happy hour; good food and nice mix of choices; nice ambience. Definitely recommend this place for a nice but low key dinner lunch or just to meet friends for drinks after work or before the theater.
I had the French Dip which was made with thinly sliced rib-eye. It was fantastic! I have had many a French Dips in my time, many of them very good, and I have to say Hill Street's is one of the best I've eaten. My wife loved the salmon as well. We will definitely be back.
Music Center close with excellent food.
The food was good, but not great. Service was good, drinks ok, a good place to go for dinner before a concert at Disney Hall.
Awesome food. They got us in and out quickly so we could make it up to the theater on time.
Great service. Excellent food. Outstanding drinks. Will come back for sure!
Way too loud. Couldn’t have a conversation. My Food was cool and lacked flavor. My date’s food was better. Cute place and great service.
The restaurant was great food was awesome the drinks were great to the waiter very helpful
Absolute delight to sit and enjoy the food and the beautiful corner spot of the location. I just enjoyed a show with my friend and this was an amazing follow up to close out the day for us. The Hillstreet burger melted in my mouth and the ingredients and sauce was the perfect amount. Hillstreet’s soups were amazing too! I had the Tomato Bisque last time with their incredible grilled cheese and I tasted my friends Hillstreet chili that was ordered with a side of potatoes which was very delicious. I can’t get enough of this place and I am happy they are in Downtown!
Pretty close to Disney Center, Music Center and City Hall. Solid food, flavorful, large servings in a modern setting.
