It's great that Highland Avenue has returned to its high standards of quality dining. For a while, the restaurant seemed to be declining, but the past several times we've been there, it's been terrific again. I recommend it highly! It's a huge asset to the dining scene of Hickory.
Everything brought to our table was exceptional! Especially in Taste! But also beautiful and perfect portions. We especially enjoyed the use of locally grown produce and other local products. The creativity and excellence of the chef’s creations was remarkable...every dish different, every dish a taste sensation. The atmosphere was relaxed, spacious, and comfortable. Thanks for a WONDERFUL evening!
Maybe, food was great, service was not. Waiter was also bartender and he was very busy with drink orders so we spent a lot of time waiting, and waiting. Not his fault and he was very apologetic for the wait, but having to be somewhere after dinner we had to rush through food when we finally got our food. Too bad, I had high hope but may not try again.
Wonderful place to eat will for sure be returning and had an amazing server who is great as his job. We all got Ribeyes and they were fabulous and we will definitely be returning for future dinner plans.
Enjoyed a birthday dinner for my bride. Jennifer was our server and did an excellent job of serving, recommending - particularly the wine - and being attentive without being obtrusive.
We were promptly seated, and soon greeted by ourserver for our beverage order and provided with menus. Service was great. The duck spring roll appetizer was perfect, as well as the Curry Rubbed Smoked Beef Brisket, that was a special for the evening. Looking forward to dining there again in the future.
They were very short staffed so service was very slow and the air conditioning was not working. They do not serve filet mignon which is odd for a high end restaurant....the sirloin was very tough and difficult to chew. They were out of a lot of things on the menu. Ambiance is great but not for the price.
Great place to spend time with friends. Great service and plenty of food options!
We have been to Highland Avenue several times, and it can be up and down. This was a down night. To start, we were seated at one of the tables against the windows, which are fine for two people, but not for three. The drinks were good! The appetizer was delicious!! The rest of the food was just okay. We ordered a hamburger, which was a bit dry. We also ordered the chicken risotto. It was okay. We had ordered it before and really enjoyed it, but this time, it was not nearly as good! The strawberry hand pie was good, even though it didn't resemble a hand pie. The restaurant was busy, which probably accounted for the slow service, but not for the less than appetizing choices on the menu!
Meat and cheese board was good. Chicken risotto, shrimp and grits, NY strip were definitely way below average for even an average restaurant, much less one that prides itself on fresh outstanding dishes. Each of us left on our plate more than we ate. Caesar salad had essentially no dressing and did not taste like any Caesar salad eaten previously. Ice cream was good and brownie was hard but not terrible. Good beer and wine selection. It seems that only “good” items were those not requiring any cooking. We were treating a woman (with husband) for her 70th birthday. We were embarrassed to have chosen this site. Wait staff were fine -won’t be returning!
Pork chop was very disappointing.
Waitress gave incorrect information and was not attentive. The food was good, but not exceptional for the price. We have lost interest in going back.
I had a wonderful experience at Highland Avenue. We had a larger group than anticipated, but the staff bent over backwards to make us comfortable and meet every need. I was extremely impressed with how prompt they were getting our orders in and the food out to us. Will and Erich helped me with seating details leading up to our dinner, and Rachel did a phenomenal job waiting on us throughout the evening. I would easily recommend Highland Avenue to a friend.
First date away from our newborn daughter. We’re from Charlotte & newly relocated to Lincoln County. Had no idea the culinary experience that could be offered in Hickory. Amazing!
Waitress had no welcome or greet, forgot our drink at the bar. Chicken risotto was very bland, bread was dry. The food was just not very good. Cool atmosphere that's about it.
Great experience. Wait staff was very professional. Small mistake with food however they made it right immediately.
The meat & cheese tray was outstanding! Also, we were impressed with the specialty cocktails we ordered. Our service was terrific.
Locally sourced menu items stand out at Highland Avenue Restaurant. The North Carolina bass and Chef's choice vegetarian dishes were delicious. We could not have had a better dining experience. Everything from our drinks at the bar to the wonderful recommendations made by our server led to a memorial night. James and Yakelin, our bartenders, were incredibly knowledgable and made fantastic cocktails- my favorite was the St. Germain martini. Our server, Andrew, made excellent food and wine recommendations. Thank you Highland Avenue!
Have had always been great. Ordered the strip rare and it cane out well done. Ordered another rare and after 20 min of waiting we left. Done for a long time. Very let down and disappointed.
First time at this restaurant after several trips to Hickory. Great food an outstanding service. There was a slight delay in seating because we arrived early for our 7 PM reservation and we asked for a different table. Because of the delay we were comped with a free dessert- outstanding bread pudding.
Great experience at Highland Avenue. Awesome service from our waiter David. Excellent variety of food and drinks with NC craft beer on tap for all pallets. Can't wait to go back.
As a unique restaurant providing local farm to table dining in a refined ambiance...we fully enjoyed our dining experience at Highland Ave. Knowing the atmosphere can get noisy on the weekends; an early reservation made for easy table talk and excellent service on our date night. Highland Avenue remains one of local favorites.
They could get A1 steak sauce.
My boyfriend and I dined here last Valentines Day and decided to do so once again. Unfortunately it was nothing like the year before. The room seemed to have been rearranged and they sat us right in front of the open kitchen even though there were a row of seats along the side with no one occupying them. Luckily they were accommodating in moving us to a more romantic and quiet table. The menu was different from the usual menu in that it was $55 for a prix fixe meal of which none of what I had intended to order was on that menu. We both had the fried oyster appetizer which were very good except for the overly saltiness which my boyfriend loves. They included a chili aioli and a pepper jelly which worked perfectly for a sweet and spicy profile. Next came the salads, Caesar and farmer greens, both tasted like they had been prepared at 10 am and stuck in the refrigerator for hours. My greens did have a nice balance of sweet and smoky added with the bacon, cherries and smoked peanuts. The most disappointing part of the meal were the entrees. I had the trout which was different from the regular menu as they substituted carrots for the sweet potato latkes. The meal came out ice cold, the carrots had just been thrown on the plate straight from the refrigerator and the fish placed on top, with some strange whipped sweet creme fraiche and burned greens for an accent. It was definitely not a thoughtful dish and seemed to be prepared in a huge hurry. I sent it back and got another plate which was warm and had a more thoughtful presentation, but still too sugary between the creme fraiche and the carrots. The fish was good from what I could tell. My boyfriend ordered the chicken risotto, which was boiled, tasteless chicken mixed with a sweet chunky risotto. Our service was outstanding and the management was very on point with the details, but the takeaway from all this is probably pick a less busy night to eat here.
The service was outstanding and the meal was absolutely perfect for our Valentines dinner. They have such a great atmosphere and the menu selection had a great variety.
Delicious seasonal food. Creatively combined ingredient choices. Willing to work with food restrictions. Friendly and helpful wait staff. Though the prices are on the expensive side, the freshness and quality of the food made us feel like we got our money’s worth.
Great atmosphere, good food, and wonderful service. Very enjoyable !
Food was good overall. Service was a little slow out of the kitchen but our group wasn’t in a big hurry. Our server was very good and knowledgeable going over the menu. Very pleasant to deal with and friendly. Manager was quick to apologize for slightly slow service which he didn’t have to do.
Very pleasant meal, food was good and service great.
Our dinner was perfect from the service to the food. We will highly recommend Highland Avenue to our friends and will definitely be back ourselves!
Our waitress kept making excuses for the delay and acted as if she didn’t know we were coming even though we had a reservation. Service was poor and slow. Took almost 3 hours from sitting to leaving. Very disappointed.
Great environment, this was our first time going and from time of entering the door to leaving service was exceptional. Food was very good, the menu had great variety to fit any person. The food truly represents a Chef that takes ownership in what he is delivering to the guests. Great find, we will be back.
Wonderful food and service. The steaks and chicken were excellent. Loved the warm bread served with marmalade and ginger butter.
Will go back for sure.
This meal was fantastic! The restaurant is small and cozy. I loved duck egg rolls! My husband and I both ordered the strip and the quality of meat is remarkable. I was surprised with the house made steak sauce, very different but really tasty! Our server had a great personality and was very familiar with the food offerings! We will be back!
I think our waiter’s name was David. He begins our experience telling us that the restaurant is slammed and we will have to give him a few minutes before he can take our drink order. Then he proceeds to tell us that we will not have a choice in desserts as they are out of everything except for one choice. I order the steak medium well. It arrives so overcooked that there is no pink at all. He does not come back to check on our meal until the rest of my party is finished with their meals. I ask him to take mine away, explain that it was not cooked to the doneness ordered, and that I did not want another as it had no taste and my party was already finished with their meals. He insists on bringing me another one in a box and tells me that if I don’t take it, he will feed it to his dog. No manager ever comes to speak with us. We get our checks and the couple we are with is charged for an extra meal and we were charged for my steak. From start to finish our experience was a disappointment....not at all what I would expect from a high priced restaurant. I have emailed the restaurant and have not heard a reply.
We love Highland Avenue and have always had such a great experience there!
Went early during opening Friday of Queens Feast. Place was already packed and very loud. Service somewhat slow but food OK.
Menu looks interesting enough that we will return after Queens Feast to try again.
Upon entry there was the smell of old beer. Brewery below. 1/2 price wine night on Thursday very nice. Duck spring rolls terrific. Steak was tough cooked a little too fast. Entree average. Potatoes not well cooked. Beans boring. Sweet potato soufflé excellent for a winter night. Overall above average experience
Its always a treat to dine at HAve! Thanks Will Locke and the staff for another special and delicious meal. We'll be back soon.
Mt father-in-law was visiting from out of town so my husband and I took him to Highland. Everything was fantastic as always! My father in law lives in Charleston and was blown away by how great the oysters were here in Hickory! As always, the weekly special (I had the Golden Beet Pasta) was delicious as well. Excited to return soon!
