Delicious food, quick friendly and attentive service. I'm sure we will visit again.
Food was A, server was A- (Only negative was being asked if we were thinking about desert while eating our salads). Manager was friendly. Restaurant was empty, only 1 other table had people eating and no one at bar. Interior is great and the warehouse feel is nice. Hope more people will patronize. Much better experience than our last trip there about 2 months ago and I think they have new ownership so potential is there. Will be back.
It's been awhile, but Highland Avenue is still very, very good. I see that some of the worst waiters have moved on, but competent wait staff seems to be a challenge in Hickory, NC. I had the pork, which was far too rare...and didn't have much flavor. Party of four: steak/fantastic, fish special/meh, fish tacos/great, handpie special/great, and chocolate tarte/great. I like this place, very stylish, nice vibe, not loud but lively. There just something not coming completely together with the food--very, very good as it is, it could be great. Nice drinks, but slow bar. I'm nit-picking...great place.
In town for a retreat and wanted to go to a nice place for dinner with some friends. What a great building! Really neat history being in an old mill. The food and service were fantastic! I decided to try something different for me and I had the duck which was amazing. My wife, who is pretty picky about her grits, has the shrimp and grits and said they were awesome! We’ll definitely be back even though we live two hours away.
I have dined at Highland Ave 3-4 times now, and have been pleased every time. This is a great hidden-gem for Hickory, NC. The food and the service is always first class. I love the freshness of the farm-to-table offerings that define the menu, and the staff is always well-trained and attentive. By far, my favorite part, and the primary reason I keep coming back, is the overall vibe and atmosphere. It's ambiance is classically-inspired, and very Sinatra-esque...but with a neo-modern vibe that's both classy and comfortable at the same time. I smile every time I walk-in, whether its for dinner, a drink, or dessert.
It's a perfect date night spot, and the best place in Hickory for a classic cocktail.
Very nice atmosphere and the service was excellent.
My Husband and I dined there the other night and everything was great! The new food and beverage menu are both delicious and definitely an improvement. Our bartender Andrew was very knowledgeable and great at making cocktails. The manager Amanda was very friendly, helpful, and extremely knowledgeable. We were also ecstatic to see Frank Family Wine on the list. We will definitely be back and look forward to trying more new menu items.
Sorry but we not pleased with virtually all areas of the restaurant.
The waitress was very laid back and really knew not much of anything about the menu and was very very slow. The main course was SLOW to be delivered and the pork Loin was well over cooked - even crusty on the out side. My large wedge salad was chopped- which I asked for- but was covered with Blue Cheese dressing - no blue chees crumbles. Our guests chicken was OK - but also a bit dry. The cheese and meat board, an appetizer, was really quite good - which made us look forward to the main courses- which were very disappointing - both time wise & quality wise. The final - comp'ed to us was desert - a Coconut Cake - it was good.
No we will not be back. Too many things need to be improved all around.
Took the family out for a birthday dinner. Our first time there since they changed their menu and we were impressed with the choices and the quality of the food. The flatbread and mahi-mahi tacos were great appetizers and the ribeye, burger, duck, shrimp and grits, and oyster salad were fantastic as entree’s. Almond bread pudding topped off a great meal. We’ll be back.
Great food, great drinks, great service!! We really enjoyed our dinner this past weekend!! We really like the changes that have been made! They have a great bartender! If only that bartender could instruct the bartender at Cafe Rule how to mix a cocktail using the same mixers, we would have two really great restaurants in town!!!
I wish there was more of a selection. However, our server was outstanding. She should be cloned!!!
We were celebrating our 28th wedding anniversary and our waiter was exceptionally helpful and kind. My husband really wanted one of their special desserts but the number of pieces were low so he even held back a dessert for us so they wouldn't sell out by the time we were ready to eat it. He also made me a cup of fresh coffee and warmed up the cream so that it wouldn't cool off my coffee. It's those little things that will bring us back again. Well done!
Food is always delicious and cooked correctly! Only recommendation would be to encourage the servers to have a better working knowledge of the wine list.
Awesome experience. A little loud. Need more designated parking
I recently dined at Highland Avenue with some friends for a pre-concert birthday celebration. We made a reservation in advance but decided to eat at the bar instead; the hostess was very flexible and accommodated us quickly. We had a wonderful experience. James at the bar was awesome. So helpful with drink and food decision. All his recommendations were excellent. As first time diners, we got a delicious sampler of picked veggies and cheeses. Between the three of us we tried the steak and the salmon, both were perfectly cooked and delicious. The kitchen was awesome, accommodating a low carb diet with a veggie substitution for potatoes. We will all be back, and hopefully get to sit at the bar with James again, he is a true gem!
The restaurant and service were wonderful. Our waitress was attentive and personable. The quality of the basic food(local, fresh, etc) was great but the final dishes were not well seasoned or tasty. In trying to be "fancy, flavor was really lost.
Great anniversary dinner and first time visit!
Went for husband’s birthday. Service was excellent, staff was very knowledgeable about wine and beer list.
Good food beautiful place
Always a pleasure to dine at Highland. Phenomenal food and service.
Amazing farm to table food. Such a beautiful presentation. Such delicious flavors!
Excellent food and overall experience. Unique menu. Really enjoyed the renovated mill look and feel. Definitely would go back and recommend to a friend.
everything during our visit was great!! The service, the drinks, the food, all fantastic!!
Been to Highlands a number of times and the real attraction is the building and
Great as always!
Highland Avenue is a beautiful restaurant with unique food and a great atmosphere! I could not have picked a better place to celebrate my 21st birthday! The H.Ave Another cocktail was delicious and the staff made me feel very celebrated and happy! I will definitely return to this restaurant in the near future.
Awesome new menu!! And James the bartender is AMAZING!! His knowledge of wine, spirits and more is so much fun!!
Andrew - is also great!!
Great food, service and atmosphere - what else could you want on a nite out!?!?
My husband's risotto meal was bland and my feta ravioli meal was better. For $11 the flatbread was good but pricey. The ambiance is very nice and our waiter, David, was excellent. For the prices they charge this restaurant needs to up their game significantly with their menu.
Several things on the menu were described or offered as Chef Selections. Our server couldn't describe what was included in them for the evening. While part of a fresh, farm-to-table experience might include a rapidly changing menu, it was frustrating that several items on the menu required ordering without really knowing what you would receive. The Chicken Risotto was very bland without any hints of parmesan which was listed in the description. A restaurant with lovely ambiance, but "menu-roulette".
Lovely restaurant. Was disappointed the trout was no longer on the menu, but food was delicious and we had a very nice experience.
This was my boyfriend and I's fourth time to Highland Avenue, and the best one yet! All of the staff congratulated us on our anniversary on top of being their usually kind and welcoming selves. Even more special, the owner had the chefs prepare us both a complementary appetizer and dessert. All of the food was spectacular. Highland Avenue remains my favorite restaurant-- everyone should go and enjoy!
Eaten here many times since it opened, and will continue to patronize. They were great when opened, had a little issue in between but appear to be getting back as one of the best restaurants in the area.
Enjoyed dining at Highland Avenue celebrating 12 years of marriage. Great food and service.
Made a reservation for 6:30 pm when we arrived our table was ready and waiting on us! This was our 16th Anniversary dinner and was absolutely amazing! We both ordered a steak with firecracker shrimp. The steaks we perfectly cooked and the firecracker shrimp were delicious. Our waiter David was quick, thorough and very courteous. Our food was to our table in a very timely manner. Highland Ave was the perfect place to celebrate our milestone! The Creme Brulee is the stuff dreams are made of!!😍
I made my reservation through Open Table for my wife and I to celebrate our anniversary.
I chose Highland Avenue Restaurant and could not have been happier. From the matrie d who greeted us by saying “Happy Anniversary”,to the best server, Andrew who also welcomed us with “Happy Anniversary” and explained menu items to us, to the Highland Avenue Restaurant who presented us each a glass of wine, to the atmosphere, to the ambiance, to the Chef, and finally to the presentation and taste of the food, which was absolutely fantastic. Everyone should experience this 5⭐️ Jewel of Hickory.
The staff was excellent and service was efficient. Food was excellent
I'm only reviewing my most recent experience at Highland Avenue, as my previous times there were outstanding. I brought a large group after my daughter's graduation...service was decent, but the food was terrible. Everything came out cold, overcooked steaks, undercooked pork, bland.
The food was not worth the value. And the shrimp and grits was too smokey.
The food was spectacular!! It went above my expectations! Our waiter was phenomenal and loved the setting, not too fancy and not too casual.
