High Cotton - Charleston Ratings and Reviews
We loved everything about this restaurant. We had a short wait for our reservation but the staff was looking out for us from beginning to end. We got seated at the window and there was a Birthday card with 2 glasses of champagne on the table. Our server Melissa was fabulous, she had great suggestions and her service & friendliness exceeded our expectations. The baked oysters, stripped marlin and Haddock were all delicious. They come with sides which is not always the case. The focaccia bread was really good and the wait staff was always checking on us. I was really surprised to get a birthday slice of chocolate cheesecake since they had already treated us to champagne. It was so good that we ate all of it even though we were full from dinner. Loved this place, had a wonderful evening The ambience is nice too, live music in the bar.
We expected good food and drinks, given the location near our hotel in Charleston and the comments and reviews; however, the evening exceeded our, as it turns out, mundane expectations. 1st, the food was superb, elegant, well prepared, timely yet allowed for discussion and before dinner cocktails. 2nd, the wait staff were excellent, gave excellent advice including what they favored or didn't - unusual but very well received by us. The ambiance was nice, well done, meaning comfortable but upscale. There were two gentleman in the lounge/bar, who were playing guitar and banjo, singing wonderful Appalachian, 50's and before folk songs I had not heard since I was a child. They provided a nice background rather than dominating the ambiance. As to prices, a bit up there, but if one can manage (we didn't!!), one can have a delightful experience without feeling as if it was too expensive. Both of us loved it, 3 days later are still referring to the experience and would highly recommend the High Cotton Restaurant.
Had a 20min wait for our Saturday brunch reservation, but once seated, everything went smoothly. Recommend the sparkling wine and fruit nectar flight for the table and the pastry selections to start. Depending on how hungry you are, that might be enough, but the full menu will tempt you to order more. Good food, good vibes, banjo playing - lots of fun.
This restaurant was beautiful inside and had a nice bar area. The food was pricey, but good, although both my friend and I (she had halibut and I had scallops) thought they were a bit on the salty side. And the bread they bring to the table is very salty and garlicky. The noise level was high and it was hard to hear each other.
We were seated in the middle of the restaurant and forgotten for almost 10 minutes. My wife finally asked the water pourer if we had a waiter. Overall, I don't think we can recommend this restaurant. You know, first impressions and all that. Oh yeah, to make it even better, they couldn't find the wine we ordered off the wine list! We don't think this was their opening night. Who knows?
She crab soup and baked oysters are a must. Focaccia bread very good. Husband had the stuffed trout which was very tasty. My halibut was also good but I’d try something else next visit. Great service and nice ambiance. Would recommend for special night as it’s a bit expensive.
Third or fourth time there, really like the smaller room to the left as you walk in. I requested that we be seated there and they accommodated that, we were right at the front window. Just makes for a nice evening to be able to look out to the street. Food was excellent as always and the service was very good. Just enough attention when we needed it, always a balance that he pulled of effortlessly. WE split and entre as we most times do and they were very receptive to that.
My meal was very good; excellent actually however my husbands oysters were horrible. They were small and tasteless. He did send them back. The wait staff and management were very good about it without being overbearing. Because the oysters were obviously small I feel the chef should have been aware and not sent them out from kitchen. I would have preferred a comment of "Our oysters are not available this evening as they do not meet our standards" then to send them out and have an uncomfortable situation. My salad and halibut were great! As was the dirty martini with extra handmade blue cheese stuffed olives!!
My wife and I went to High Cotton for dinner Sunday night. There was entertainment by a small band, which was fine, but the overall noise level made it difficult for the two of us to carry on a conversation, even when the musicians were not playing. This was not the place for a quiet, romantic dinner. I thought the food was quite good. I had oyster stew, and then baked oysters. My wife had a beet salad to start, and also baked oysters, both of which she enjoyed. The dessert chosen was apple crumble, with vanilla ice cream. One serving shared between the two of us would have been quite enough, but of course we didn't do that! There was a very nice wine list, but my wife could not drink due to medication she is taking, so I was limited to wine by the glass, since I didn't want any police trouble on the way back to our hotel. An Albariño paired nicely with the oysters.
We were very disappointed in our dining at High Cotton. First, it took awhile to get our drinks, then 15 minutes or so after we placed our food order the waiter returned and said they had lost our food order. The shrimp and grits were not done and had zero flavor. The fried oysters and salad were good. It was overpriced for the food we were served.
Good experience overall. The food was excellent. The waitress was pleasant explained specials and made recommendations. Out food was served promptly and was very good. We arrived at 7:15 and were seated on arrival it was nice. I would go back again and recommend to others.
Decent place, BUT my mother’s food came out incorrectly cooked and our order took quite some time to get to our table. Two tables sat after us and received their food more than 20 minutes before us. The biscuits are $5 per order and I would have said that they were worth it, but they were cold and a bit hard.
We have enjoyed this restaurant a few times when visiting Charleston. We tried the Shellfish Tower this time. It was very delicious and a good choice for a couple that enjoys shellfish. It was all fresh and every item was delicious. Great wine cellar and a great evening.
Excellent place to eat in Charleston.
Food and service was excellent.
Atmosphere was also very nice.
Only complaint - had a drink at the bar and the pour was incredibly small.
Bar tender did a visual pour and really short changed us.
in my opinion a restaurant should never skimp on the amount of alcohol they serve.
This should never come up as a complaint
Beyond that everything else was great !!!
