Hieronymus Seafood Restaurant & Oyster Bar
My husband and I were looking for great seafood while in Wilmington. This restaurant did not disappoint. Their catch of the day Carolina style was very yummy, as were the fried shrimp. The praline cheesecake is phenomenal as well. We sat on the patio, which was quiet and low key. Service was wonderful. We will definitely visit again!
We first dined on the Memorial Day 2021 weekend. We enjoyed it so much in fact that we returned and ate there the very next night--ordered the same menu items. So, for a family celebration, we decided to return and Hieronymus did not disappoint. I was a little sad that the Red Drum was not available for me to try (they only had Flounder) but that's okay--I will try next time. Our waitress was attentive and answered all of our questions. I will say it's hard to eat and then have an almost two hour drive to return home. The "I"-tis is real! LOL!
Food was delicious as usual and service was wonderful!!
I decided to have dinner at Hieronymus. Johnny is famous for his margaritas. I like some of their other cocktails as well, and they have a full bar, decent wine list and decent beer list on top of that, but I am a sucker for Johnny’s margaritas. He puts a couple of additional ingredients in there, salts the glass, and finishes it off with a little Grand Marnier. Not too sweet, not too tart, just right.
Hieronymus offers an entire steamer platter of clams, oysters, shrimp, mussels and crab legs, or get most of the shellfish individually on their own. They also typically have a couple of species of raw oysters. That night, I went with 6 raw oysters. They were a local species (local being within 100 miles) and they were good. I use the lemon juice generously with just a tiny amount of cocktail sauce on each oyster, and was quite happy.
Many times in the past I will order their she crab soup as an appetizer. Hieronymus is famous for their she crab soup. It is a rich creamy soup with fresh crab and comes with Sherry mixed in to give it that special flavor. Unfortunately, the roux for that soup has a lot of vegetable oil in it that doesn’t agree with me. As long as the vegetable oil doesn’t bother you, this soup is worth the trip.
Hieronymus always has fresh fish on the menu depending on what was available locally that day. I opted for the red drum and was very pleased. Red drum is a whitefish but as its a bottom feeder it’s not the standard choice for many seafood places. However, one of the cool things about Hieronymus is that they have six different ways to prepare all their fresh catch of the day. Over the years I have tried them all. The Carolina is my frequent choice, but I felt like blackened was the Over the years I have tried them all. The Carolina is my frequent choice, but I felt like blackened was the right match for the red drum and I was right.
Service wasn't great but considering the pandemic it was reasonable. What wasnt reasonable was waiting over an hour for my fish only to find out that "as they were taking it off the grill someone bumped and he dropped it on the floor." It also happened to be the "last piece of swordfish". Then the replacement salmon was out suspiciously fast.
My wife and I drove down from Lake Norman to attend the Glass Animals concert in Wilmington and decided to eat before the concert at Hieronymus. Outstanding food and outstanding service. We will definitely eat here again whenever we are in town.
We were sat at a tiny bar height table with 4 people. Barely enough room for plates and cups. The food was mediocre at best. We were very disappointed and our bill was outrageous.
Little things that cost nothing would help. Many tables wobble, should be shimmed. Side dishes were not very hot, fries were under cooked. Most likely will not return. Server had no clue about oysters or the types of fish offered.
We looked for reviews of locally owned restaurants and found this one - It was just what we were looking for! Delicious food. No frills. Great service. And good local color! We will go back next time we visit Wilmington!
The shrimp and scallops did not taste fresh. They were over cooked and the scallops had an odd, bitter aftertaste. The Mediterranean pasta was cold and bland. The bread that came with the crab dip was soggy from being soaked in butter. I really wanted to like this place, but it was disappointing, especially considering the prices ): The servers were very sweet and accommodating.
We visited from Washington DC. All the downtown waterfront restaurants has 2 hour waits. We ventured over to Hieronymous and sat on their outdoor patio. Our waiter was very attentive and knowledgeable. We ended up having really delicious meals and a wonderful experience. I highly recommend this place!
Food was excellent. Our waitress Jess was one of the best I have ever had. Highly recommend.
The food, service and atmosphere was outstanding. I do not live in Wilmington but look forward to returning soon to dine here.
Above average seafood Restraunt where fresh fish can be prepared several ways. The fried dishes we’re above average the oyster Rockefeller appetizer stood out . The service was very good.
Michelle our server did a great job with a packed house. Mahi-Mahi with nut crust, Blackened Flounder and scallops and steamed clams. A wonderful local family run place with something for everyone to enjoy.
We love the place it was nice and Quant. The food was excellent and the girls are working there tails for the people. Highly recommend
The server was very nice and food was delicious. I had the Shrimp and Grits.
A normal seafood restaurant. Service was good, quickly seated with reservation. Good was good and had grilled fish where we didn’t want fried options.
The food was great and the crab soup was out of this world!
Not a good value at all. You're better off going to Long John Silvers
Excellent food and exceptional service make Hieronymous a must try in Wilmington, N.C.
Everything was great. Our server Matthew was excellent. The timing of courses was perfect. Less hectic then the summer tourist locations. Down to earth and friendly.
Great online reservation. Very friendly service. Great food.
We don’t come here often enough.
All around good service and good food from the back of the house.
Restaurant appears managed well, everybody on the floor working together to seat, serve and clear. Food came out smoothly.
Will come back.
The food and the service was great. I ordered a Dark and Stormy for $9.00 and it was awful. Didn’t come with any limes and tasted like crap. The bar tender obviously had no idea what the hell he was doing. Other than that the place was great!
Outstanding she crab soup. Oysters we're small but very tasty. Shrimp and grits was amazing. Also, Brennan was a fabulous waiter.
Great hometown feel to the restaurant. We had the Steamed Oysters, Steemer, Flounder, and
Good food, relaxed, but a bit expensive. The shrimp and scallops were great.
Great food, great atmosphere. Best Shrimp & Grits ever
Hieronymus is an icon in Wilmington that you don't want to miss! Honestly the best fish entree I have ever eaten!
Waitress Was friendly and accommodating. Food was cold when brought to the table. Ordered grilled shrimp and it came blackened. Waitress immediately replaced the dish. Servers were very young and inexperienced
We had a 5:30 pm reservation and had to wait for approximately 20 minutes to be seated. However the hostess were very apologetic and attentive. After being seated, the service and food were great. It was a very accommodating dinner served out. If you like seafood, I recommend you try this establishment. This restaurant is on my top 3 list of places to eat in Wilmington, NC.
Tasty local seafood restaurant! We enjoyed the ambience and the friendly service, definitely recommend to have a meal here if you’re visiting the coastal towns of NC!
The fresh fish is always good. I had blackened corvina, and enjoyed it; the others in our party also enjoyed their meals, although my husband said he would not order fried red drum again. Salads were good, but the supposedly steamed broccoli and cauliflower turned out to be brocolini swimming in butter sauce. The watery sauce filled the plate and I had to move my fish to my bread plate. Disappointing.
Service was unfortunately quite slow. We could see that our server was busy (not just standing around chatting or whatever), but once our friends arrived it was 25-30 minutes before our server even greeted them and took their drink orders. He did well while he was there, and I suspect that, like many other restaurants, they were short handed.
We will be back; Hieronymous is one of of favorite restaurants. I don’t know that our friends were impressed enough to plan a return visit
Amazing food and service with Michelle.
a but come down every now and then to see friends. Been coming here for 35 plus years. Never disappointed. We now live in VA. When we do come back to this area, we always eat here. Service last night was "spot on"! Food, as the "usual" great! Looking forward to our next trip down!
Food quality and service was all OK …. No issues, but nothing to write home about with exception of the nut crusted lobster sauce option for their fresh catches of the day … I chose the swordfish … the sauce with a hint of cinnamon was very good
The food was delicious, atmosphere was great. Price was good. 2nd time going, will be going back.
Food was excellent. Made reservation days before, but still had to wait longer than I thought for seating. Slow pace.
Very nice family dinner. Our waitress, Jessica, was pleasant and very efficient. Food came quickly and was quite good. All 4 in our party were very pleased.
