About Hi-Life Restaurant - Upper West Side
Hi-Life Bar & Grill is one of the Upper Westside’s most popular and longstanding neighborhood restaurants (est. 1991). Hi-Life's 1930's decor is the backdrop for bar & grill classics like flame-grilled steaks and hamburgers, broiled and seared fresh fish specials, bountiful "Big Bowls" of pasta and entree salads, and last but not least a Sushi/Raw bar. (Hi-Life was the first NYC restaurant to install a traditional sushi bar in a non-Japanese restaurant setting in 1993. Expertly prepared sushi & sashimi at Hi-Life is a natural extension of the classic Raw Bar one might expect in our 1930's environment.)
Hi-Life also serves a "traditional Westside" brunch that features fresh squeezed juices, complimentary blueberry muffins & cinnamon toast as well as a 2.95 brunch cocktail deal.
In the warmer months Hi-Life outdoor seating includes 28 seats along Amsterdam Ave and another 18 seats on our 83rd St side.

Hi-Life Restaurant - Upper West Side Ratings and Reviews
The Hi-Life Restaurant was a good choice for dinner. We liked the menu choices and the wait staff was attentive and friendly. It was nice sitting at an outdoor table as it was a beautiful evening and lots of people watching. The food we had was well made and tasted great. We would definitely eat here again.
Good neighborhood bar like atmosphere but a lot more! Big variety menu with lots of specials. The vegetable dumplings were great. Skip the guacamole and the calamari was nothing special, but still good. I had the Cobb salad and it was perfect. Dessert were very good too!
My wife and I eat at Hi-Life on the average of once a month and have been going there for years. Obviously, we enjoy it a great deal. The main dining room tends to be active and a little noisy for our tastes which is why we eat in the café, which is quiet. There is a very wide variety of food and although I have my favorites, I vary my meals there. The food is best described as comfort food but is always well prepared and tasty. Service is punctual and prices are very reasonable. One of our very favorites places, in or out of the neighborhood. Steven Wolfe
Our Open Table Res was promptly honored, and we were given as nice outdoor table as requested.
We had a charming and tasty casual brunch, with delicious breads, and some slightly non standard selections - Good!
Service was friendly - bus staff, a little disorganized but affable. We were allowed to linger and chat long after we'd finished and paid.
Not what I was expecting. we were looking for a nice place to have dinner but this is more of a bar scene. Pretty loud. Service was minimalistic. Felt like they were trying to move us out of there. Wasn't never asked if we wanted a second drink nor dessert, just whether we were ready for the check. I'm sure for a quick and casual meal, this would be fine, but I was looking for something a bit less chaotic and more upscale.
I don't know why I stay away from Hi-Life. I've lived on the UWS for 20+ years. Every time I go, I'm pleasantly surprised by the food. Maybe it's the decor? Maybe it's that it doesn't feel local? I'm really just writing this review to remind myself - I enjoy Hi-Life.
I went out with a few friends for a few drinks and we all enjoyed the ambiance and the positive vibes from this place. It was especially nice that they served sushi, which is not common at a bar. We really enjoyed the old school feel from this restaurant/bar. They also had really unique shirt that were available for purchase. This place is highly recommended!
I live in the neighborhood and for 15 years go there whenever I'm eating out in the area. Usually it's a great, casual place with good service and food, and great for casual business dinner if it's quiet. The other night made us maybe never want to go back. A neighbor and I went and there were a couple big parties so the noise was pretty high. It took awhile for the server to get to us, understandable with the big parties. But it was loud. We both ordered the same salad (a big salad with blackened chicken and hearts of palm and stuff), him first, then I said, "I'll have the same thing." But when it came, he got the right salad and they brought me a Caesar salad drenched in dressing. No big deal, we flagged down the waitress but not only did she not apologize, she claimed I said, "Caesar" and didn't offer to try and fix it. So I had her to bring it back to the kitchen and tell them there was a mistake and if they had an issue to send the manager over. After about 30 seconds she came back with the original salad and said, "because we have so many parties tonight they said it will be a really long time to make another salad." (Really? It's a bowl of greens, chopped veggies and a sliced chicken breast.) She put the Caesar back down and asked, "can't you just eat this one?" My friend jumped in and said, "we'll just switch, I'll eat his --" and she took off. But we basically both ate his salad, and had bites of the now limp Caesar. She came by much later and apologized for not getting the right salad and said, "I hope you're not too disappointed." And I said, "sorry - I am. It wasn't what I ordered." Then the bill came and I got charged for the Caesar. We've never had service like that there so we both left pretty disappointed, mystified and hungry. And having been a waiter, I still felt guilty and left her 20%. But next time if I go, and it's loud, I'll make sure my order is repeated back to me. But there's also a good restaurant on the other corner.
