Herringbone – La Jolla Ratings and Reviews
Disappointed in our server for the evening - my wife did not like the pork belly. Instead of asking for a different meal, or if it could be prepared differently, the meal was taken away and still left on our bill at the end. Won’t come back to this location, but will continue to go to Santa Monica location given overall better service.
Went for Valentine dinner. Lots wrong. $88.00 for their 4 course meal was a ripe off. Waiter was inattentive, 45 minutes between courses, pasta was in-eatable and I ended up not having a main course. Steak was undercooked and couldn’t be cooked more because they cut it into strips.
We were first seated right next to a bar cleanup area where dishes and bottles were clanking loudly. Then we were moved to a table where overhead music speakers played really loud music that was certainly not of the romantic sort. The manager was nice and discounted our dinner but the experience was awful.
Overall, worst Valentine’s Day dinner ever.
The pictures do not do this restaurant justice. It is absolutely beautiful! I will say that the chefs clearly have an affinity for hot sauce...two of the four courses my boyfriend had for Valentine's Day dinner tasted unmistakably of it... Nevertheless any issues with our food were forgiven thanks to the incredible ambiance of the place!
Great for Valentine's Day lunch with the BEST Hostess ever! Usually there are TWO hostesses,
(and I've never been impressed by any !!) but ONE was just right, especially this one!
Chris was our waiter and we ate from menu along with a bottle of wine. I had wierd requests (like straw for my water glass) and special bread for my sandwich and he cheerfully accommodated me. Don't think I was offered a dessert menu though but would have asked if I needed one. Our relaxing lunch ended with the gift of a long
stemmed RED rose! Voila for Valentine's Day! FREE parking lot is always appreciated!
Visiting from Boulder and had great meal. Tuna poke was fresh and served on a flat bread
The fish entrees were well seasoned and well done . I had the whole fish while my wife had the black cod. Wines were a little pricey but the service was attentive and prompt
Our first time at this restaurant. Was told we would have two servers sharing our table. Saw one of them once and the other maybe 4 times. For a party of two we ordered 2 refillable drinks 2 starters and 2 entrees and side order. Our time at the restaurant was 2hrs. Honestly we got more service from the runner then our servers. Looking around our servers were paying more attention to other tables even enjoyed laughs with them. While my drink was still empty. I had to push my empty class to the edge of the table for them to notice. Keep in mind both servers frequently passed our table. At the end our servers were tipped what they deserved for their services. Our runner got a more generous tip for his hard work. Thank you to the hard working runner you made our experience better.
Went there for a special date.
Since we arrived early, we grabbed happy hour drinks and nibbles, and sat by a very inviting fireplace that took the chill out of us. Great drinks, not watered down. Fried Brussel Sprouts with candied Pecans (on the happy hour menu) were killer! While we were sitting by the fire, Jimmy, the manager, came over and greeted us. He spoke to us for a couple of minutes, despite being very busy, and told us about the history of the building the restaurant was in.
When we sat down for dinner, Jimmy brought us two glasses of Champagne, very gracious and not overdone with a lot of hoopla. We had the Branzino and Red Snapper, both were wonderfully prepared. The waitstaff worked smoothly thru dinner in a team. They were attentive but not hovering. A true skill that shows this place has done great job training their staff.
To finish the evening off, Jimmy again brought us a desert plate, nicely decorated for the occasion.
All in all a very memorable evening, great meal, and wonderful staff.
Stopped in for an early lunch. It was a very quaint & unique restaurant. My husband and I each had a flat bread pizza. They were both very good. But, they were big enough that we wish that we would have just gotten one to share. We each had a glass of Zin that was spectacular. We would definitely go back.
Everyone was fantastic except the bartenders. It is always a bummer when the bar is busy, exactly what a Bartneder hopes for and yet they seem miserable and do not engage at all. It didn’t ruin an amazing night where everyone was and the meal and drinks were fantastic! Nice work Malarky!
I have been here before for happy hour and dinner, and the ambiance has always been trendy but peaceful. For whatever reason, on this evening the music was BLARING. My group commented that the style of music that was being played (Nicki Minaj, Justin Timberlake, etc) was hardly in keeping with the tone of the food and atmosphere. We enjoyed our meal but could barely speak to one another - it was a Thursday evening in La Jolla but felt more like a Saturday downtown. I wasn't as thrilled as I usually am when I leave Herringbone. I will note the staff were lovely, as always, and very attentive.
Right in downtown La Jolla, Herringbone not only has a diverse and delicious menu, but also has multiple choices for seating - on the patio in front, around the bar, and in a large quiet back room perfect for a group. In addition, there is adequate parking right at the restaurant.
This is our third time and probably last at this restaurant. It has a lot of potential but the service is the worst and un attentive The servers just wait for you to ask for what yo want. They just ignore you once you are seated and you are on your own. It was a dissapoitment, but we will find a new go to place in the area.
This establishment has never disappointed us. Excellent food, great service. If I have any complaint, it's that the noise level is too high with the music, making it very difficult to have good conversation. I had the scallops and they were pure perfection.
Everything fit the mold of a super hipster high-end eating establishment with small plates, minor mention of local fair, great staff, great wine, cocktails, and the food was excellent. The ambiance was good positive energy.
The only thing.... when we asked if the black cod/ sablefish entree on the menu was from Alaska, we were told it was from the Atlantic side of the US. Are sablefish actually distributed on the east coast?
I would recommend that Herringbone provide their customers, visitors with more detail on where the food is coming from with as much detail as possible, add this information to the menu. I didn’t see any local California shrimp that was a slight disappointment.
That being said I would visit this place again and recommend it for an awesome date night experience or an evening out with friends.
Amazing Food! We ordered the Local Ceviche so good we ordered a second one as an app.. One of us ordered the scallops, one shrimp, and the other flatbread pizza and shared a blackberry torte - ALL AMAZING!!! Jasmine iced tea as great flavor can’t wait to take my next guest!!!
Dinner great. Signature cocktails? Meh. Maybe they just forgot to put gin in The cucumber mint lemon drink whose name escapes me. And the Chenin Blanc glass - good with scallops but nothing great on its own.
Regular cocktails great.
Roasted carrots, great.
Scallops, cauliflower salad: both great.
Ahí poke- an amusement but the chip is super salty.
