Herringbone – La Jolla Ratings and Reviews
Right in downtown La Jolla, Herringbone not only has a diverse and delicious menu, but also has multiple choices for seating - on the patio in front, around the bar, and in a large quiet back room perfect for a group. In addition, there is adequate parking right at the restaurant.
This is our third time and probably last at this restaurant. It has a lot of potential but the service is the worst and un attentive The servers just wait for you to ask for what yo want. They just ignore you once you are seated and you are on your own. It was a dissapoitment, but we will find a new go to place in the area.
This establishment has never disappointed us. Excellent food, great service. If I have any complaint, it's that the noise level is too high with the music, making it very difficult to have good conversation. I had the scallops and they were pure perfection.
Everything fit the mold of a super hipster high-end eating establishment with small plates, minor mention of local fair, great staff, great wine, cocktails, and the food was excellent. The ambiance was good positive energy.
The only thing.... when we asked if the black cod/ sablefish entree on the menu was from Alaska, we were told it was from the Atlantic side of the US. Are sablefish actually distributed on the east coast?
I would recommend that Herringbone provide their customers, visitors with more detail on where the food is coming from with as much detail as possible, add this information to the menu. I didn’t see any local California shrimp that was a slight disappointment.
That being said I would visit this place again and recommend it for an awesome date night experience or an evening out with friends.
Amazing Food! We ordered the Local Ceviche so good we ordered a second one as an app.. One of us ordered the scallops, one shrimp, and the other flatbread pizza and shared a blackberry torte - ALL AMAZING!!! Jasmine iced tea as great flavor can’t wait to take my next guest!!!
Dinner great. Signature cocktails? Meh. Maybe they just forgot to put gin in The cucumber mint lemon drink whose name escapes me. And the Chenin Blanc glass - good with scallops but nothing great on its own.
Regular cocktails great.
Roasted carrots, great.
Scallops, cauliflower salad: both great.
Ahí poke- an amusement but the chip is super salty.
Overall it was a nice place for a special dinner date with my husband. Our waiter started out attentive but as soon as tables were seated, we lost him. Our drink took forever as well as paying our bill. Our bill for two was $150+, so I would think he would be more attentive, but nope. Oh! The local (?) singer was horrible! It was awful t listen too. Oh! The table next to us “knew” a cook so they got lots of perks. Lucky them... not us... just another table in the mix. Sucks because we know the owner
I selected this restaurant based on the description and the reviews on the web and was disappointed. The food was mediocre at best. The service was terrible, we ordered our food medium well and it came medium rare. We asked for a drink with a small amount of ice and it came filled with ice. We asked for other things and didn't get them. Nobody really cared how we ordered things, they just filled the order to fill it. Basically, I paid for high end service and food and got diner service and food. We made a reservation for 7:15 and waited until 7:45 to get seated. While we were waiting, friends of a hostess showed up and got seated right away and had their drinks and food almost immediately. Overall, not a good experience and I would not go to this restaurant again.
This was a wonderful lunch! The staff went out of their way to make sure we had a great time! Alex the manager arranged for us to have the maple doughnuts at our lunch ( usually only available in the evenings ), and went the extra mile to ensure our enjoyment.
Congratulations to the chef -- the whole fish ceviche is astonishing! As are those doughnuts! We loved every moment!
Thank you to everyone!
Mediocre drinks. Poor service and inedible food. We ordered two pepperoni pizzas which came out dry, burned and rubbery. When brought up to our server’s attention (Dustin?) he said they were in “rustic style” and were meant to be like that. Dry. Rubbery. Burned. No apologies given, only smirky unprofessional attitude. Have you heard of customer service? Probably not. Learn to fix mistakes instead of amplifying them.
If you’re a fan of wood hard, burnt pizza with a thin layer of cheese this place is perfect! Otherwise stay away and find something better, which is so easy to do in the area.

Poor, slow service was not the server's fault as he seemed to be the only server on duty during this Thanksgiving Week lunch. This was a management fail. Waited protracted periods for everything, from ordering to food delivery... but our waiter was really the nicest guy. Fish tacos had very little fish... ceviche was delicious!
Food and Service always 5 star. Price OK.
Very noisy at 7PM as bar with happy hour is carried by loud speaker into restaurant . Hard to have a conversation!!! Suggest not having bar noise so loud in restaurant for those who go to eat with friends and want conversations!
My husband and I had a fantastic evening at Herringbone celebrating our anniversary! Beautiful setting and lighting with the Olive trees and indoor enclosed courtyard. Our waiter was very friendly and kind. Excellent cuisine also, including the beet-arugula salad and delicious scallops.
I was very disappointed by the service we received from our waitress. She was very absent minded and forgot many of the items we ordered. When reminded of the missed items instead of taking ownership of the issue, she became argumentative. I do like the restaurant, good food, and ambiance. I would not come back to this restaurant if she was my server again.
The food was fantastic as well as the service. Corey did an amazing job with suggestions and helping me and my wife figure out what we would like to eat. He was extremely knowledgeable about everything on the menu as well as being honest with which dishes he preferred over others and also stopped by the table to check on us every few minutes to make sure we were doing okay and didn’t need anything. The environment of the restaurant made me and my wife feel very welcomed and we enjoyed the experience immensely.
