A mediocre experience. I understand restaurants are having to face the challenge of creating an outdoor dining space, but Herringbone’s really missed the mark. Metal tables placed on the road / parking spots with basic vertical aluminum fences surrounding the area was not the atmosphere expected from a restaurant of this caliber.
Additionally, we went for brunch midday and the sun was strong, we had to request an umbrella for shade (we were with a 6 year old who was very uncomfortable in the sun) and the umbrella that was brought over got blown over by the wind after about 1 minute. We ultimately got another umbrella that was sturdy enough to last the meal.
Food was great, server was ok but did forget an item that we had to request again (it’s ok, it happens).
I think some turf on the ground outside and some shade sails would have gone a long way. I’m not a snob, but paying a few hundred dollars to eat in a parking lot just doesn’t seem right.
Had a wonderful Mother's Day brunch on Sunday. Was very pleased with the food and service. Was a little disappointed we didn't get to sit inside since that was what drew me into making a reservation at this restaurant. That being said, I am planning on another visit for dinner, requesting to sit inside to actually enjoy the experience of the restaurant instead of the parking lot.
Wanted to hit up the happy hour oysters and was pleasantly surprised by how good the food was. Enjoyed my dinner with the family for Mother's day.
Had brunch with my sister and mom and the food was not great. The restaurant and ambience is nice. They also have great drink specials. Not sure how dinner is, hoping it’s better than their brunch. I had the chilaquiles and it was literally Pace Picante sauce poured over chips with a small squirt of guacamole sour cream. My sister had the American breakfast an Mom had the avocado toast. It was ok. Overall it’s great to go for drinks and nibble a little but don’t go expecting a great meal.
Herringbone was a beautiful place to hold my birthday brunch. The service was excellent and they were very attentive to a larger party. Will definitely go back.
Our service was terrible. Our waiter took 20 mins for our drink order, another 20 mins to get us the drink we ordered. We actually had the appetizer come out before drinks. The only food item that was good was the steam clams app. The French fries were way too soft, clam chowder was chew and chunky and the ceaser salad didn’t have any flavor. We had to ask the food runners to tell our server we wanted another drink. We had to ask someone else to get our check. Clearly our server did not check on us. Very beautiful restaurant but ended up with terrible service and over priced food as we did not enjoy majority of what we ordered.
The salt and pepper calamari was delicious. The sea bass was fabulous! The asparagus side order was also excellent. Unique décor and great service. We will definitely go back!
Our server brought us two glasses of champagne to celebrate our 16th Anniversary !
We've been here over a dozen times, and it was my husband's choice for his birthday dinner. What a disappointment. Will not be back. Waited over an hour to get our food. Their two selections for glasses of chardonnay were both awful...and I am NOT a wine connoisseur, I will usually drink anything! But the wine was acidic and sharp, not good! The fries and guac we got as appetizers were good. Fries could have been from Wendy's, nothing special, but we ate them! My husband got the sea bass because it's hard to find at restaurants and he always loves it. It was a little bit undercooked, served over potatoes and sausage....no sauce at all! And my salmon was served over risotto. It had potential but it desperately needed salt!! I've watched enough cooking shows to know you are an idiot if you're underseasoning your food!! Rookie mistake. NOT what I was expecting from a (former?) 4-5 star restaurant. Honestly, there is no salt and pepper on the table at these places for a reason....you never need it! And that meal needed it badly. Such a waste of a birthday dinner and $200. Will not be going back again. Is Brian Malarkey still even in charge of this place? It sure doesn't seem like it! Oh one more thing....I gave bad marks for the ambiance too. I understand taking out 40% of the seating...but did you really need to remove the comfortable seats and leave the hard backed chairs? And my daughter wanted a leaf from the famous olive trees growing out of the restaurant.....they are fake???? WTH?? When did you replace those trees with fake leaves?? That was the topper. I couldn't take anymore....
Hostesses were very rude and inexperienced, outdoor patio was poorly set up. Out waiter was fantastic despite not being able to tell us what kind of oysters we were having. "East Coast" is not a type of oyster.
Waiter? What waiter. Oh, the dude in the muscle tee flexing in the corner is our waiter? Would somebody please let him know.
Horrible servers. It was like dining at a gold’s gym with every male server having to show off their build, while a number of them wore their masks as chin guards (covering their mouths but not noses, which is DUMB), and they were completely and utterly inattentive. Food was ok, not great. I’m not going back. Come on Hakkasan group.
Good service, nice restaurant, but absolutely terrible food.
We had reservations and got sat inside this beautiful restaurant but this is ALL that this restaurant has to offer is it’s decor! We waited over one an hour to get our appetizers which one of them was wrong so had to wait another half hour to get our other appetizer. The main entrees took well over two hours from the time we were seated and the server was so slow and really didn’t seem to care about giving good customer service. It’s over priced with food that is not impressive. My food arrived cold and it was my birthday dinner so at the end of our meal, the server says we’re out of desserts so here’s a glass of rose. We would never recommend this restaurant to our family and friends so please save your money and go to another place in La Jolla that are equally as beautiful but with also amazing service and food which the Herringbone does NOT have!!!
Amazing happy hour! One dollar oysters, seven dollar flatbreads etc. We also tried the rockfish aguachile which was like a rockfish ceviche, it was amazing! We had both desserts, pineapple upside down cake and chocolate mousse and both were incredible. Beautiful restaurant, very fresh and delicious food and great service.
Wolf made our experience at Herringbone amazing! He answered all of our questions and made great suggestions while providing great service.
Out of all oysters or seafood platters. Did not tell us until we had already ordered drinks and apps. The reason to go to herringbone is for those things. Service was weird.
Place is very cool, not what you expect from the outside. great happy hour
The oysters were amazing!!
The atmosphere beautiful.
The food and the service needs some work to match that.
The place was wonderful.
Definitely worth a visit. The food was really good as well
We loved everything from the decor to the food, wine and service !
Great customer service from Amaya our host who seated us. Excellent service from Josh our waiter. He gave us a great tip for eating oysters with horseradish sauce!! The perfect addition for oysters when you dont Tabasco sauce! Overall GREAT first time experience. Also loved the touchless parking process with the Laz Parking kiosk. Will be coming back again Soon! Btw, I was there during their Sun Happy Hour 3p-6p..Cya Soon!
Took a long time to get service and food was mediocre and cold. Hostess was great and helpful!
We were there at 10am for a reservation. The hostess said we had to wait for our 3rd person before she could seat us, which seemed a little strange as the restaurant was quite empty so far. I could see if it was a busy weekend evening. There were a lot of bussers/servers walking around but after 10 minutes we had to ask for our server. Again, a little strange considering we were possibly one of only 2-4 tables seated, and the only one seated in our particular section. The food was also quite mediocre. My friend and I each got a dish with béarnaise sauce, which we were both expecting to be dripping off of our respective proteins in the dish, but they came out slightly congealed. Mine was sitting perfectly on top of my steak as if it were a dollop of butter. It tasted fine, but it seemed like our food had been sitting. Again - strange due to how many people were there. Our server, Will, made up for a lot. He was personable and checked on us an appropriate amount. Probably won’t ever come back here for actual dining. Not sure the ambiance is enough to make up for it just to come for drinks either. I’ve been wanting to try this restaurant for many years, and I’m fairly disappointed.
First time (and last time) eating here. We were seated promptly at 8pm, didn’t get to place a drink order until 8:15, got only 1 of our starters ordered by 8:50pm and the server still had not taken our dinner order. Dinner came at almost 9:30 and my risotto was cold and a little undercooked. But after waiting so long I didn’t want to send it back. I can say the steamed clams were amazing but the compliments end there. I had high expectations and they fell flat.
Great food. Terrible service. Didn’t see a waiter for 15 minutes after being seated. Our oysters came a long time after our main food. The patio had heaters but they didn’t bother turning them on in our section. Our section was completely neglected by the waiters.
Service was so slow and awful, they weren't even busy. We had to flag down waiters for our drinks and refills and the check
We had wonderful service at this beautiful restaurant from the moment we sat down. The cocktails were delicious, particularly my mezcal one (can’t remember what it was called.) The oysters were delicious and presented beautifully, I wish there had been more of our calamari appetizer, it was a bit small for 4 to share. Among the four of us we had the whole branzino (gorgeous), the salmon (the risotto was perfect) the filet (delicious) and the sea bass (so big and flavorful! Loved the chorizo!). I wish I remembered our servers name, she was the best!! A great night to kick off our girls’ weekend!!
Everyone was very nice. We were seated right away. Took 30 minutes for oysters to come out. The drinks were great. I would go back for happy hour only. The food was just ok.
Food was delicious! Staff was very friendly! Overall impressive experience. Thank you!
The ambiance of this place is super cool. The food however, is terrible. I had the filet. The “salad” on the plate was bitter. The filet itself was tiny and cold. The only good thing was the guacamole and plantain chips. Our waiter was nice but he only came to our table to get drinks, drop off a plate of food and drop off our check :( I had been waiting over a month to come here. I may try again in the future for a redemption visit but idk yet.
Food was very good, cocktail list was amazing, we did have to be situated outside which was OK but would rather have been inside
The little ahi/poke tacos were awesome...I could eat those all day long. Good drinks, entrees and ambiance.
Wonderful Dos amd dining experience for al occasions especially Birthdays
Oysters were the best I’ve ever had. Happy hour is amazing
Made a reservation for an anniversary which they didn’t acknowledge. Bartender came to our table to help us with drinks because server disappeared and they were not busy. It took a long time to get drinks and food. Definitely not coming back.
Ambiance was amazing. Will definitely go back try the happy out and the brunch.
Herringbone never disappoints. We travel to the area about once each year and always make sure to stop by Herringbone for a meal. Everything is prepared with care and attention to detail so that each bite is delicious. The atmosphere is creative and fun. The service is friendly and efficient, but with a personal touch. Highly recommend.
Love this place for a nice date/ special occasion. Awesome ambience, great personality, a great place for everyone
The ambiance is great even during Covid. The service was spotty. My pet price is when all guests are not served at once. My sons dinner came out 5 minutes later than ours and it was still cold in the middle of the fish?!!! 9/12 oysters were good but 3 were undersized and not flavorful. Also slim Pickens on the sauces and lemons that were served with them. The mushroom pizza was great. The steak small and over priced.
Also the beers and wine are about $2-3 over priced. No big deal but a little insulting! I’d still go back but they definitely. Red to up there game.
