Herringbone – La Jolla Ratings and Reviews
Mediocre drinks. Poor service and inedible food. We ordered two pepperoni pizzas which came out dry, burned and rubbery. When brought up to our server’s attention (Dustin?) he said they were in “rustic style” and were meant to be like that. Dry. Rubbery. Burned. No apologies given, only smirky unprofessional attitude. Have you heard of customer service? Probably not. Learn to fix mistakes instead of amplifying them.
If you’re a fan of wood hard, burnt pizza with a thin layer of cheese this place is perfect! Otherwise stay away and find something better, which is so easy to do in the area.

Poor, slow service was not the server's fault as he seemed to be the only server on duty during this Thanksgiving Week lunch. This was a management fail. Waited protracted periods for everything, from ordering to food delivery... but our waiter was really the nicest guy. Fish tacos had very little fish... ceviche was delicious!
Food and Service always 5 star. Price OK.
Very noisy at 7PM as bar with happy hour is carried by loud speaker into restaurant . Hard to have a conversation!!! Suggest not having bar noise so loud in restaurant for those who go to eat with friends and want conversations!
My husband and I had a fantastic evening at Herringbone celebrating our anniversary! Beautiful setting and lighting with the Olive trees and indoor enclosed courtyard. Our waiter was very friendly and kind. Excellent cuisine also, including the beet-arugula salad and delicious scallops.
I was very disappointed by the service we received from our waitress. She was very absent minded and forgot many of the items we ordered. When reminded of the missed items instead of taking ownership of the issue, she became argumentative. I do like the restaurant, good food, and ambiance. I would not come back to this restaurant if she was my server again.
The food was fantastic as well as the service. Corey did an amazing job with suggestions and helping me and my wife figure out what we would like to eat. He was extremely knowledgeable about everything on the menu as well as being honest with which dishes he preferred over others and also stopped by the table to check on us every few minutes to make sure we were doing okay and didn’t need anything. The environment of the restaurant made me and my wife feel very welcomed and we enjoyed the experience immensely.
My wife and I ate here for our anniversary October 14th 2017. It was absolutely beautiful and really unlike anything I have ever been to.
The good the service was great. The servers had made sure we had everything we needed. Before going over to there next customers. The food was delicious I had the chicken and I must say it was cooked very well Although the sauce is something of an acquired taste my wife thought it was delicious. My wife had the crab cake and said it was one of the best she’s had.
The bad: the place was very crowded and very loud which made it hard to talk to my wife who was sitting next to me. The serving size was a little smaller than what I thought it was going to be which didn’t make up for the price. And the customers that went to eat were your typical rich stuck up La Jolla folk which took away from the experience.
On a good note, I would think about eating here again it’s very unique and that’s not something you find in your everyday restaurant it had its own personality. Well done!
Two out of three meals were amazing. Sea bass was not the best on 10/14/17. Amazing decor and service! Way too loud! Couldn't hear each other. This was our second visit. All meals were great last time and it was not as loud. 5 stars that time. I think it depends on where you sit. And fish can be iffy I guess!
This restaurant is so fun with it's indoor trees and rustic nautical decor. You'll see food you recognize on the menu but they are served with Herringbone's creative flair. The manager, Alex, was extremely friendly and went out of his way to make us feel welcomed and happy with our meal. Everyone was friendly and it was a great experience over all. Thank you.
I've been here several times over the years, but always for dinner. Saturday brunch was a first. I've yet to come here and check everything off at once when it comes to food experience, service, ingenuity, value for price, etc. but am always hopeful. The French toast was excellent, the best ever, but none of us could find the eggs that were supposed to be in the chilaquilles dish. In spite of it being Saturday brunch, there were no fruit juices available although they served mimosas, but I was able to get a great cup of fruit "off" menu. The service was okay, not super attentive considering the slower crowd, and being offered at least one coffee warm up would've been nice. And I don't see how, at least upon opening, staff can't ensure that restroom necessities are refilled. It's the little things that make a great restaurant. This one is still in a learning curve, consistently making basic mistakes as though no one's really in charge or is indifferent to overall customer experience. I like the ambiance and decor, and for Saturday brunch in La Jolla clientele were remarkably light - perhaps telling. I hope they can realize their food and service potential at some point.
I picked Herringbone, for a "1st date" with a new friend from Riverside County.
Thanks to the excellent service, from your very vibrant Server, Rune, my date was a "hit"!
Very knowledgeable about the menu, and its ingredients/preparation. And his "timing" was perfect. ( not too "hovering", not too "absent". Just Right, for a 1st Date. )
I will recommend Herringbone (& Rune), to anyone who asks...
