Here's Looking At You
This was my first time dining at HLAY and it did not disappoint! My friend and I shared the chicken liver toast, shredded salad, little gems salad which we kindly received as complimentary (thank you!!), mussels in spicy broth and bone marrow toast with anchovies. We loved every dish but I think my personal favorites were the chicken liver and bone barrow :) So so good!! Our server was very attentive and the owner came over to say hello which was very sweet:) A truly wonderful dining experience! :)
So unique and special! But most importantly, the world class cocktails are the standout!
This is truly one of the most exciting restaurants in Los Angeles. The chef is a genius. The flavors are so unusual and yet work so perfectly. Every dish is a revelation.
The best restaurant in LA :-)
I had high expectations for this restaurant based on Jonathan Gold's appreciation of it, Unfortunately, my expectations weren't met. I ordered a bunch of dishes based on recommenddations from the waiter, so i suspect i got a good sampling of their foods. I like unusual dishes, but the flavors were more odd than delicious. I might try the restaurant again based on its proximity to the Wiltern Theatre -- but not based on my samplings of the food.
We tried a few different items, small portions at high prices.. everything tasted good but not extraordinary
Everything on the menu is amazing. HLAY constantly puts out some of the most innovative food in LA, and it looks and tastes amazing. Highlights are the bone marrow, which is pure umami on a plate, and the chopped salad, which is an incredible play on banh mi vegetables
Everyone did a great job and enjoyed both the cocktails and food!
Small dining tables set too closed each other.
Been eating here since the week they opened and its always one of the best meals in the city. Creative and passionate people in every aspect of the process. By the way after years of eating here we just figured out that there's parking in the back so heads up.
AMAZING as always. The corn ribs, the frogs legs, the yellowtail crudo, the lambchop, the strawberry parfait! You guys always leave me stuffed to the gills in the best damn way. Thank you thank you.
Adore this place for dinner. Was much less impressed by the brunch food. Toast was burnt, my husband’s English Breakfast was just okay, and the waffle was an epic miss (I love waffles and salted sweets, but this was somehow overly salty AND overly sweet... Plus the ratio of topping to waffle was WAY off. Avoid.) Additionally, the prices seemed very steep, even for LA. Overall, we were pretty sad about it — we don’t get out often for brunch, so this was a real shame.
I saw this was a great restaurant on several lists, which I now know they bought their way on. I love weird combinations, and I’ve had way better for the same price in LA with a similar concept. The food was really just mediocre at best.
Some of the most interesting and delicious food I can remember eating Brilliant chef
Amazing. Always amazing.
Every single thing we ordered was delicious and looked beautiful. The menu had so many great options that we really had a hard time deciding. The only thing that I think can be improved is that the interior feels a little uncomfortable since it's a bit cluttered and the seating arrangements are a bit awkward.
Cocktails were on point. Food, too. A new fave!
Fantastic service and menu. The cocktails are fun and delicious. While the venue is a little loud for my tastes, I suppose that’s how people in Los Angeles like to eat. Everywhere is like this. The quality makes up for it. Maybe everyone is shouting their joy?
Zucchini bread, ricotta, burnt honey
Tomatoes, bagna cauda, lap xuong
Biscuit and gravy
All the breads
Blew a gift cert for six people else it would have been a very expensive brunch for 14 items and drinks
The food is delicious, creative and unique. Highly recommend going and trying at least one thing out of your comfort zone, you won't regret it.
Service was fantastic. Drinks were incredible. Food was divine. Loved it
Service and the food was great.
We loved every dish we ordered and we ordered everything on the menu. We’ll recommend this restaurant to all our friends.
Overall, a fun evening with friends, a debate over the true meaning of the word 'tapas' and who would be a better plumber, The Flash or Batman - you decide. Along with the standard fare found on a nouveau menu (shishito peppers, mussels, & bone marrow), the blood cake and beef tongue are delicious, although, the highlight of the evening was the chicken liver w/basque peppers. The cocktails are good, be it a bit on the sweet side for my delicate palette, but on the whole, if you're looking for a fun evening with a relaxing meal and leisurely conversation, this is an excellent choice for dinner.
I had a really amazing time, thank you so much! The service and the menu is amazing.
My favorite on our last two trips to LA, amazing, creative food and great service. I wish it was closer to us!! We will be back as soon as we can, keep up the good work, we love you!
We loved the meal, and made a reservation to return. This remarkable restaurant serves out of the ordinary dishes excellently prepared.
Incredible!!! Best restaurant in la. I don’t know how it’s not on every list.
Food was not the usual food found on most "trendy" restaurants
The Desserts were amazing. The main Entrees we had were perfect.
THIS PLACE IS SUPERB! We celebrated birthdays here. Everything was great! Our group of four ordered about 10 different dishes to share for dinner, then we tried all 3 desserts that were on the menu. Absolutely every dish was delicious and interesting - there wasn’t a single item I wouldn’t enthusiastically order again. Service was excellent and personable, and plates arrived at our table right on time, like it had been carefully choreographed in the kitchen. I will definitely go here again.
LOVED THIS PLACE. Fav new La restaurant
The food was amazing. Drinks were also very delicious. Service was prompt. Ambiance was very nice for either a date night or just to hang out. Will definitely be back.
As usual the food was incredible. What was a fantastic surprise this time was the new pastry menu by Chef Thessa. Everything was so insanely creative and unexpected. Honestly just get all of them.
We went to HLAY for brunch, we read about it in EatLA. Even though there is taxidermy on the wall, the place was really bright and had a very 'LA Brunch' atmosphere. Our server and host were extremely helpful, and we never waited long to get what we needed.
We tried 4 dishes, and the bagel was by far our favorite.
We’ve been here close to 10 times by this point, and I’m happy to say it hasn’t disappointed yet! This was a birthday dinner for my mom while she was visiting from NJ, and she was also blown away by the quality of the food. This is not only our favorite neighborhood spot, but honestly just our favorite place to eat in LA.
Food is awesome - service the exact opposite. So unorganized- waited at the table for 10 min at Sunday brunch before we were acknowledged.
The chicken liver was off the charts, and I don't generally love chicken liver. Every dish was so unique and tasty. I loved the shisito peppers and the dip that came with was stunning.
Truly one of the best meals I've had a long time
Menu is very odd and not particularly good for a pregnant woman I realized. Service was good though.
I have never had a bad meal here. All the flavors and textures are always interesting even if it’s a dish most people would be squeamish in trying at first. (Never a problem for me as I will try any food at least once) They do hospitality right here. The service is always on point. Lien, one of the owners always remembers your name if you’re a repeat customer. This is my go to dinner spot whenever I’m around the area to go see a show at The Wiltern.
