Here's Looking At You
I love this place. Never disappoints. The staff is superb. The food is always delicious and unique. It’s the perfect balance of high end fancy food, but still a casual warm environment.
Really interesting and yummy food. Surprisingly, we preferred the vegetarian dishes to the meat entrees. The desserts and cocktails were STANDOUT. Our waitress was amazing and helpful with accommodating dietary restrictions. The only complaint would be one that I've read in other reviews: they overbook. We waited around 40 min with a reservation. Kind of ridiculous to make a reservation for such a long wait.
Also a little annoying that after the long wait, we requested a table near the window that had cleared up, but were told it was reserved to combine with another table to seat a party of six. A group of 2 were seated there about 10 min after we were seated.
Delicious dinner, but prepare to wait a while.
May not be the best brunch option if you're gluten sensitive (like my wife); but if you aren't... so much goodness! The signature cocktails were amazing and the food was delicious.
Shishito w/Tonno was the best dish and surprising, given how many restaurants do shishito peppers. Bagna Cauda, beets and river prawns were all on point. Mackerel was just ok, didn't love the pickled treatment and the proportionality of the dish. Pork Belly shouldve been awesome, but wasn't because they cubes of belly couldve/shouldve been rendered better to be more tender inside. THat said, still was a strong dish. Drinks all great.
Excellent and unique
In a word, this meal was phenomenal. Creative and fun menu executed to perfection. In a land of talented chefs, this is a menu that challenges conventions. Loved it. Can't wait to return.
Fantastic food and service
Given the name of the restaurant, I would have expected a more retro - lounge feel. Ambiance not special; music a bit annoying and not in sync again with name of restaurant. Sharing plates mostly. Food was interesting and tasty, but some plates seemed high priced for what you receive. The dessert choice was disappointing. Only two desserts, both cold dishes on a cold rainy night. Neither dish seemed interesting so we passed on desserts even though we love sweets and were celebrating a birthday! An interesting choice if you are a foodie looking for new combinations and have the budget to indulge. Not a cozy romantic place for a date.
Busy, smart restaurant with very creative menu and share plates. Good service. Wine by the glass. Enjoyed the night.
What an amazing place! The food is innovative, beautiful, unique and insanely delicious. The desserts are out of this world..The service is top notch. This is a gem of a restaurant. I am so thrilled to have it in our city.
This is definitely a restaurant for foodies. This is NOT a place that is trendy where the food does not actually taste good.
The yellowtail collar dish is great. The fish itself had beautiful taste and the coating was delicious. It is very difficult to add flavor to yellowtail that enhances the flavor without overpowering it, but this dish was successful at accomplishing just that. The menu changes frequently, but the shishito peppers and corn ribs are stable favorites. The chicory salad is tasty, as are the different fish crudos. We've had other dishes that were delicious but unfortunately for you, they are not on the menu right now, and I can't remember the names.
ALWAYS, ALWAYS, ALWAYS SAVE ROOM FOR DESSERT!! The chestnut mochi is the BOMB! I always laugh when people say they are too full for dessert. They just don't know what they are missing. Don't say no one told you!
It feels like an Instagram algorithm cobbled together every trend with no regard for the experience as a whole. Bright flourescent lighting (but not charming like Night + Market), poor service, overpriced and average tiki drinks, strange portion sizes. The whole operation is trying too hard and lacking in confidence. All too photogenic, and terribly shallow. I do not recommend.
Birthday celebration was great, food was delicious and service was excellent
Simply the best! I've dined here almost 10 times and its continues to impress.
My wife was asked if she had any allergies and she told the wait staff she couldn’t eat cilantro. The kitchen still put cilantro in the dishes and then told my wife they don’t remove any items for customer. We also reserved table seating but was switched to bar seating without any notice. When we confirmed reservation we asked again for table seating but was told there’s a maximum of only 1.5 hours we can dine....
The food was delicious but very small portions and a bit pricey. Most likely won’t be coming back.
An incredible neighborhood restaurant. Service always attentive yet never overwhelming, casual and the food always creative without being pretentious and complicated. Simply delicious.
The service was impeccable, the food was amazing and the desserts were especially delicious 😍
Came here the second time after a year. I must state that I LOVED their food last time I was here. But this time, I'm pretty disappointed. I found most of the dressing/sauces in my food extremely acid - too much love for the fresh lemon juice? HLAY is definitely overpowering their food, most dishes we ordered were just heavy. I hope they switch things around and do a better job with their food.
The service was attentive with some staff more friendly than others.
Great place, wonderful food. Great variety of food.
Food and drinks were delicious although a bit pricey. $16 for a small glass of sangria and $18 for a glass of wine are a little too high.
This place is awesome. The staff was awesome. Great music. Go with a group so you can order the whole menu.
Went there for my wife's birthday and we brought along our 11 month old son. They were super accommodating and didn't "kid shame" us. Our son loved the Beef Tartar and Frog Legs the most!
Great brunch, enjoyed it more than dinner.
portion was way too small
Felt like animal. Very enjoyable
Food was good, not great like I remembered. Octopus fritters were bland, beets were fine, whole fish needed something other than pickled veg, the yellowtail crudo was insane but only four tiny pieces. Probably will not return. Besides that yellowtail, no stunners.
This was a disappointing $700 experience for my son's birthday. He is a foodie and was so excited to have his birthday dinner there so we invited his friends for a small dinner party. We called and told them it was his birthday and asked for a candle in his dessert and the host assured me that would be done. When we arrived I told the server again about his birthday. After dinner we ordered dessert and reminded them and again they forgot. When I reminded her she asked me again which person he was - we waited and waited and finally gave up and got the check. We gave her a 20% tip anyway and thought she might bring him something but that didn't work either. I understand restaurants get busy, but it's a small place and we spent quite a bit on dinner and they couldn't even light a damn candle for my son. We never got to sing happy birthday cuz we were just WAITING - they ruined his 25th celebration. That's so inconsiderate -we'll never go back.
Went to HLAY for a Sunday brunch date and their food blew my mind once again. I’ve only come a couple times before for dinner and the food is already amazing. I love how their menu changes every couple of months. The servers are very knowledgeable about the menu and were able to recommend some of the greatest dishes I’ve had there. Will definitely come back again and again
Sat at the bar. Bartender was really friendly and helpful even with food menu suggestions. One of our bone marrow pieces was undercooked, but other than that the food was really spot on great. Heirloom tomatoes were unforgettable and the sea bream was fried perfectly. Special Cocktails were also really nice. Would go again for sure.
Overall great experience! My finance and I tried this spot before a comedy show at the Wiltern Theatre within walking distance. Our waitress was very kind and informative. The food is best shared and we tried unique dishes like Bone Marrow and Frog Leg's for the first time. My favorite was the Shishito Peppers. Also, amazing hand-crafted cocktails.
Sitting at the bar was the way to go. We got to eat our favorites and of course that delicious burger. The bartender was attentive and the food was amazing as always
Phenomenal flavors! Both food and drinks were creative, fun and delicious. Favorites include the shishito peppers, yellowtail, unagi and burnt corn frozen custard. I wish I had space for more! Unfortunately we waited a long time (40 minutes) before our first dishes were served and there were a couple of lulls in between. I'd still love to come back hopefully it was just a service hiccup.
Went here for brunch with my daughter. Whitefish toast was amazing. Salad was a heavy on the dressing. Overall would come back- cool space and good vibe.
Food was very imaginative and perfectly prepared and presented. Loads of variety and flavors. Interesting wine list and great cocktails. Service was top notch!
Service was great ! Food was ok but quite overwhelming the jolt of acidity is quite overpowering the steak tartar was swimming in an acidic sauce! The Hamachi was good and the pork belly but no doubt of the overpowering acidity ! Price wise is quite over price for a lil place like this ! I have to say service was great attentive and informative ! Maybe not just for me ! But others liked it !!
Overall an awesome dinning experience. Globally inspired dishes with intriguing flavor combinations. Some dishes are a bit over seasoned and service was a bit slow in the beginning.
Exceptional food and drinks, very creative on both fronts. Everything was great other than the very evident decrease in attention we received when we didn't order 3 plates per person as was recommended.
This was an outstanding meal start to finish! To begin, the the mackerel was super fresh, with the marscapone, togarashi, and yuzu rounding out the flavors. Although it was late in the season, the momotaro tomatoes were firm and meaty, adding a freshness to the crunchy bagna cauda and creme fraiche. As if it couldn't get any better, the yellowtail in coconut and fresno chile was creamy with a burst of heat. The pork belly was a memorable main course. Chef knows how to work with heat, playing against the richness of proteins and adding the right acids to balance flavors. Although I was in tears (literally, and in happiness) I couldn't wait for the next bite! Desserts are a strong point here, and the hazelnut meringue cake was a perfect way to end the meal. Here's Looking at You has a great wine list, focusing on old world and natural styles. Their specialty is a compelling list of craft cocktails, which change seasonally and pair well with the cuisine. It's no wonder this restaurant is on every critic's radar for the best restaurants in Los Angeles. I highly recommend this place and can't wait to return for another meal!
Creative menu that changes daily, American food with Korean/Asian flavours. The flavours weren’t for us however people who enjoy Korean food will certainly like it.
