The daily specials reflect the chef's love for fresh seafood. Using mostly East-coast seafood flown in from Boston daily, the chef creates dishes like wild mushroom-crusted halibut on horseradish whipped potatoes and roasted sea bass on Caussoulet beans.
There is also a Parisian seafood bar offering towers of Plateau de Fruit de Mer with fresh oysters, clams, shrimp, and lobster.
We were so looking forward to dinner here. We’ve eaten here many times, but not recently. What a disappointment. Things have gone downhill seriously. When our first courses were served, one of our party didn’t get hers. When questioned the server said they were out of her choice. No warning. When my and my wife’s main course came out, a key ingredient was missing, when questioned the server simply said they forgot. No apologies. We’re done with this place.
We celebrated our anniversary at Hemmingway's Bistro. We had been there before.
The food was delicious and the server, Frank was efficient and personable and provided great service.
Love the atmosphere.
It was Mother's Day, so one would expect it to be busy. It was packed! But they did a good job of managing it, and though it is a small space and the tables pretty close together, the wait staff did an excellent job of it. It was lovely, our waiter was SUPERB, and our food was delicious. It was a really nice evening. I'm glad we went.
Lovely restaurant, but because it was the day before Mother's Day it was quite busy and we did have to wait a while for our dinner. The restaurant is also pretty cozy so lots of people plus lots of servers made
for a busy, hectic night. Nonetheless, food was very good and well prepared. Cost was moderate but not
extravagant. Husband and I ordered one appetizer (generous cheese and fruit plate), one salad, 2 entrees, one wine and one beer. The cost was around 105$ The wine was good and a generous pour. No room to order dessert but they looked very good.
Delightful food. The appetizers and salads are especially delicious and the entrees are quite filling.
Service and food sub par. What was really frustrating was that I spoke to 3 different employees advising them that there was no toilet paper/tissue in the women's restroom Each said "not my job" and it never got replaced. All 3 were rude in their response (woman at the hotel front desk - who told me it was the bistro's job - 2 women in bistro said - not my job). Waiter inattentive and food mediocre.
Always a great experience ! good food , good service , great wines list , and beers .
Hemmingway's has never failed to provide us with a fine dining experience. Wonderful food, a great bar, and friendly, thoughtful service. A perfect spot for a special occasion, if you and your companions enjoy really well prepared food and drink.
Amazing as always! Thank you!
My friend and I went to Hemmingway's Bistro on a Saturday night. I love Hemmingway's Bistro. The ambience is charming and friendly. The food is always reliably great. I had the crab cake as an entree. My friend had the fish special. Both were very good.
I've eaten there many times, but always for breakfast or lunch, when the restaurant is quiet and the service very prompt. Saturday night is a very different experience in that the restaurant was very busy. And we were headed for a concert. I had to forgo dessert in order to make our performance on time. I should have alerted the waitress that we had a time frame. Lesson learned.
The shrimp cocktail is just a few bucks less than big main dishes, and what one gets for a shrimp cocktail or seafood platter other places is much more. This waitress wasn't particularly knowledgeable about the menu and French food, but in the past, others have been great.
Our party of five had a Saturday lunch at Hemmingway's and unlike our usual experiences here over many years, we were underwhelmed. Our server literally disappeared after bringing two soup courses. After 45 minutes of waiting for our plates to be cleared and entrees to arrive (4 out of 5 had cold plates), I went up to the bar to check on our server. Another server thankfully apologized, jumped right in, and handled our party from then on. Secondly, I had asked for as quiet a table as possible because one member of our party is hard of hearing; this was fine until a jazz band and singer started a very energetic performance midway through our lunch, for what our second server informed us was a fundraiser. We support the fundraising cause - but NOT in the middle of what we hoped would be a delightful intergenerational family lunch. We literally could NOT hear the person next to us talking, so until the band took a break, we abandoned any conversation. It felt intrusive and very loud, making for a very mixed experience this visit.
This is one of our most favorite restaurants in Oak Park. The classic cocktails and delicious food never disappoint! A friend of ours was visiting from Los Angeles and is quite the foodie-just returned from Paris-and he said the foie gras special was better than anything he had in France. Our server was phenomenal as always- Hemmingway’s is a sure bet 💯
Great experience at the Jazz brunch at Hemingway’s bistro. Food was excellent. Service was fantastic. The brunch is a little pricey but all in all a great experience.
Food was great. Servers could be a bit more attentive. Overall we had a very nice time.
Loooove this restaurant! service is impeccable, food amazing And a fabulous evening overall
Everything was perfect.
They had no ingredients to make cocktails. I asked for my lamb medium rare and they made it rare. Not a place that I would ever patronize again.
Always excellent here both with level of service and quality of food. Pick your choice whether breakfast, lunch or dinner (great!) We come very often & always very delighted with our outing.
While I don’t enjoy writing a bad review here, I feel I should communicate to the restaurant and to potential diners about our experience. Our server was pleasant but perhaps too busy to give us the attention that we were hoping for on this birthday dinner. I don’t blame her for our problems with the meal, but waiting for drinks didn’t help things. We ordered shrimp cocktail to start, and it came out looking very old. There were brown spots on the shrimp, some worse than others, the tails were shaggy and just smelled old. We sent that back because food borne illness is real and it’s no one’s idea of a good time. ($19 for 6 shrimp better be good) The house salad was next and that was fine. Then came the mussels. Maybe we was because of the bad shrimp and my appetite was flagging, but the mussels had a terrible smell. They were not right either! I’ve eaten countless mussels and shrimp, and they shouldn’t really smell like much. My partner’s steak arrived and it was over cooked. Ordered medium rare, it was grey in the middle. The waitress acknowledged the problems and I’m sure felt terrible about it. My issue is with the kitchen. Why send food out that looks and smells unappetizing? The fries with his steak were like little tiny bits of potato - like the dregs from the fryer basket. It just felt that they were trying to get rid of old food. At those prices I was very disappointed and will not be going back to eat. I say - stick to drinks at the bar and you’ll be safe.
If you like classic French bistro fare and ambiance, cozy Hemingway's Bistro in Oak Park, IL is for you!
Table service is always attentive but never intrusive.
Beware of arriving too late for limited/seasonal specials, which quickly disappear from the menu!
Had Easter Brunch here. The entree choices off the menu were good as were the buffet choices however the buffet was a bit limited. The ambience was wonderful. We enjoyed the music of Petra.
Excellent Easter brunch. The buffet was extensive without being too large; the oysters, shrimp and salmon were a big hit!
Too loud . Food arrived cold but waitress remedied the problem promptly.
What a wonderful place! Great service and absolutely delicious food -- fresh and innovative dishes. So many choices (and everything looked delicious) that it was hard to decide what to order. I ordered one appetizer (the gnocchi) and a salad (goat cheese, etc.) for lunch and was absolutely stuffed. My friend had the corn bisque, which was marvelous, and a great salad. Great selection of wines, and a full bar, too!
Fantastic food great service make this local gem a hit. The food here is a delight. It is fresh and very interesting. Great French bistro. Try it.
A classic, just like the Frank Lloyd Wright architecture that surrounds it.
Love the Eurepean ambiance. A great place to converse with friends over a wonderful meal.
We had a lovely family celebration for my mom's birthday. Everything was perfect.
Our server was fabulous!
Duck over cooked and server initiated sending back to have cooked appropriately. Second time was better but still a bit tough. Fish special was also a bot over cooked. Service impeccable.
Delightful evening—wonderful service and excellent dinner!
We had a very enjoyable dinner here. The Maine Lobster special sprice was enticing, but we felt it was overdone, for tail meat was on the tough side. Everything else was great!
Incredibly beautiful atmosphere and terrific service. Food was very good, and we'll definitely be back.
We love Hemmingways, and Tom is always the ultimate professional!
Excellent food and service, nice wine list. A real find in Oak Park just down the street from Hemingway's Birthplace Museum.
Been here many times. Came for the lobster special. Just wonderful. Had the foie gras. Fantastic. Love this place! Could not have been better.
My husband and I tried this place for the first time. The service was incredible, the food was AMAZING and the atmosphere was just what we were looking for (a place quiet enough to talk to each other). We will absolutely be returning and would highly recommend!
Second time there. Love the atmosphere, service and food. It's my go to for lunch with friends.
Fantastic cuisine and service! Also, excellent jazz duo!
We had heard a lot about Hemingway's Bistro and its survived in Oak Park for at least 10 years, probably longer. We dined there many years ago and at that time we were disappointed. Since then we've heard good things about it and thought we would give it another try. After all, every restaurant has good and bad days. The ambiance is very pleasant reminding one of a European bistro and the menu is very French bistro oriented. However, the food was mediocre lacking in flavor. It also seemed to have been sitting for a while because it was not at proper temperature. Overall, we both agreed that the restaurant did not live up to the hype.
